    Newegg has 5870 now!

    Title says it all. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102856&Tpk=5870

Early benchmarks point to this card being a beast.

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

That sold out fast.  I looked about 5 minutes ago and it said available, then after looking at what little I could find on reviews (seems nda's effective through tomorrow) and clicked back and it was all out.  I want to see more reviews before buying anything and I don't really like that they have jacked up the price $100 from the release price point of the previous generation.  I may wait a month or more before buying anything as I really don't need a boost in graphic power currently.

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

guess the price sort of justifies the performance

from the leaked benchmarks pics it was more powerful then the 4870x2

though should be about $350 instead of $399 because the 4870x2 is only about $325

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

All the usual sites have the reviews of the 5870 now (no 5850 reviews yet) and it does look pretty nice.  Easily the top single gpu card and in most benchmarks beats the 4870x2 and is fairly even with the 295, and the 5870 in crossfire beats everything very easily.  Either way I will probably still wait a bit (not that there is any choice for a few days with all of the 5870's sold out) as I really don't need to up my main pc's gpu but I would like to move my 4870 into my htpc setup so I will probably break down in not too long and get one.  I guess come windows 7 release time I may update both gpu and os.

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

    5850's are out also

price is more appetizing at $259, instead of the suggested $299

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

now if only ati could come up with drivers that didn't require super human knowledge to install.  again, awesome card, crappy drivers, the sago continues.

The reviews aren't exactly glowing.  i'll stick to what i have now.

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

you dont need to be a brain surgeon

its fairly simple start up the downloaded drivers program hit express install (agree to the EULA) and it will do everything

and all the reviews ive read are praising the card like crazy for its performance

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

Oh i have no doubt the cards are great.  with all those stream processors, it had better do something good.  i've heard nothing good about the driver installation using the cd.  if they would put as much effort into designing good drivers as they do the video card, ati would be on top for longer than a minute.

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

Using the cd?  I have not used the cd for a ATI or Nvidia card in since maybe ever. And even if one did use it how exactly is it complicated?

For both you just go to their site put in what your system setup is (os and card type) in their drop downs on the download drivers page.  Download it.  Run the exe and that is pretty much it.  As far as good v bad drivers I have found both have fine enough drivers, it is not like new drivers cause mass errors and shutdowns.  You may get an occasional game that doesn't run properly, and this happens as well in both companies cases.  You can either use the previous driver for the next month or 2 until new ones are out and the game runs sans issues again.  Though frankly I have not had anything really happen since back when dx9c came out, thinking December of 2002 or 2003, not sure which year it was offhand.  So basically both Nvidia and ATI have been fine for me since then.

    Re: Newegg has 5870 now!

He sorta sounds like a Fanboy

ATI drivers are miles ahead of what they used to be, they are doing quite well now. New card, great performance, decent pricing, and it'll only get better with more driver releases.

I have 2x 4870's 1gb so upgrading to a 5870 isn't exactly 'worth it' so I'm waiting on the x2/5890 (what ever they decide to call it) to come out before I upgrade my pc.

I'll tell ya. I saw yesterday there was one available. I clicked on it and it was added successfully to my cart. I immediately went to my cart to pay and it said it was no longer available! Argh!

Oh well, I guess I will have to wait patiently... lol...
