WARNING: Newegg is selling bad Intel SSD’s..UPDATE

I bought (2) Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH160G2R5, 160gb SSD’s from Newegg and two weeks later started having disk paging errors and system lockups.  I downloaded Intel’s new SSD Tools; firmware update & new “trim” performance tools.  Firmware wouldn’t update and reported that both disk had “pre-release” firmware version (0953) and couldn’t be updated.  I contacted Intel support and they verified that firmware release “0953” was a pre-release version and not to be sold as retail.  They said to inform Newegg, gave me a case number and said return the drives for replacement.  Newegg was responsive and exchanged the first drive quickly.  When I received the replacement it also was a pre-release “non retail” drive and that now made three bad SSD’s!  At that point I decided not to continue replacing drives, since it appears Newegg has a bad batch; they said they had 100+ in inventory.  I asked for a refund of the (2) drives and again Newegg customer support was very responsive.

Now the rub.  I used the first SSD two weeks ago in a new system I was building.  When it was determined I had these bad drives I informed Newegg I didn’t have the retail packaging for this first drive.  I normally hang onto the component packaging for a few days to make sure the component isn’t DOA and functions normally.  As I have stated, this drive didn’t act up and the problem come to light for two weeks.  Newegg has refused to take the drive back.  This is in spite of the situation and even with my trying to help them identify an internal problem and Intel supporting me in having Newegg replace the drives!  They would send me a replacement drive (probably another bad unit), but not take the drive back.  I said this wasn’t acceptable and ask the case be reviewed and have a supervisor contact me to discuss.  No one has followed up!  Beware, I wouldn’t buy a drive until this situation is resolved and if you have one of these units use Intel’s SSD tools to check your drive.

I suggested that Newegg have someone look into the situation (and volunteered to have them contact me and I would share the details); no one has followed up.  I'm currently waiting on Intel tech support to see what they can do in this situation.  If Intel does the right thing and helps out I'll stay with Intel, if not, I'll try a couple of OCZ SSD's......not from Newegg.....

UPDATE: Pleased to report that both Newegg and Intel agreed to help me with these problem drives.  Newegg agreed to issue refunds for the (2) Intel SSD’s given the apparent bad lot they had received from one of their suppliers.  This was in lieu of Newegg’s standard policy of replacing this type of product (we tried that on one unit and found it was also bad).  Thanks to DoM_DoM at EggXpert.com who helped with customer service.

Intel also recognized a unique situation in me somehow receiving drives with “Pre-Production Firmware”.  Since I wanted to stay with the Intel SSD, but with Newegg apparently with a problem batch and lack of availability from other suppliers Intel agreed to exchange the drives directly.  I elected this option instead of the refund from Newegg.  Thanks to Oscar at Intel customer service.

A final note, I received the drives from Intel and ran the SSD Toolbox and they also reported firmware version “ 0953“, the same exact bad firmware of the drives to be replaced!  Intel assured me these came from their depot and should be the current released firmware.  At this point we threw the towel in and Intel agreed to refund my purchase on the (2) drives I originally purchased from Newegg.  I purchased (2) OCZ SSD’s from Newegg and they appear to be running fine.

Re: WARNING: Newegg is selling bad Intel SSD’s

Your mixing two policies to get your way. Intel is throwing Newegg under the bus if they told you something like they shouldn't be selling these drives, I mean, think about dude, Intel sent them the gosh darn things, what were they going to do, SIT ON THEM!!!???

Haven't you read? Intel has had major issues with these drives, and they recently released a firmware upodate that would brick people's drives.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Intel-SSD-Firmware-TRIM-X25-M,8944.html

So Intel knows about this mess, but they're telling you NE shouldn't even be selling these drives? Intel has fine arse CPUs and other products man, but we all know, some of their business tactics borders on sleazy and cheesy. The other folks who've bought these on Ne revs don't seem to be having issues, ummm, maybe b/c they didn't update with Intel's Bricking Firmware? Most likely.

With that said, NE has a policy, SAVE YOUR FREAKIN packaging! Since you didn't do B you expect A to bail you out? Troublesome logic, especially when you're buying into Intel's nonesense.

But we're used to Mountain dramas to get mole hill remedies, and the gents will probably help you out, b/c they care, and the company rules,

but you keep tossing them threats around there buddy, we can tell the grand scenario for what it is, b/c of the packaging issue.

    Good luck,

    A faithful NE Cust

Re: WARNING: Newegg is selling bad Intel SSD’s

LOL! The title gave me a good laugh! Like NE is responsible for it, It's Intel's product! Sorry for your experience, but blame INTEL for that!  NE is just a reseller.... They are not a technician or there to test products for you. :p

With that said, thanks for the heads up. Hope they get back to you SOON! I mean INTEL!

Re: WARNING: Newegg is selling bad Intel SSD’s

What's wrong with the title? I don't think the OP was blaming Newegg, just warning people that they have a batch of bad drives.
