    Upgrading PSU + GPU

I am planning on buying from newegg/ tigerdirect on Black Friday.

    System Specs:

    OS - Windows Vista 32-bit
    Motherboard - ASUS M2N SLI
    Processor - AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.7GHz
    RAM - 3326MB RAM
    PSU - 420W (LC-A420ATX) Bad quality brand...
    GPU - Nvidia 8400 GS

I'm thinking of a Radeon 5750 to be future-proofed for DX11 and then a decent PSU with it. My motherboard doesn't support crossfire I think but I don't really need to upgrade to 2 GPUs anytime soon, I have a 19" monitor anyway so I play at lower res like 1280 X 10XX.

Also, I'm planning on getting a more up-to-date desktop in the future and then moving the PSU and GPU to it. Any suggestions on the best PSU? Is the 5750 worth the performance or does anyone have any details I should know regarding any compatibility issues etc etc?

correct you can not run crossfire on that motherboard but its not needed with the resolution you game at..

at the resolution you game at.. the 5750 is more then enough power.. and should allow you to turn on most if not all the eye candy in games.. also your PSU is more then enough power.. at most that system wont use more then 300w.. and in game you will probably be around 250w. but with it being a generic brand psu im guessing.. you will probably want to change it.. look into corsair, PC power and cooling, or seasonic psu's..

the amount of power required will really depend on what you put in the upgraded system.. but unless you plan to go with an i7 and a bunch of hard drives.. 500w should be more then enough with a single gpu..

    Re: Upgrading PSU + GPU

Hey thanks for the response but I have another concern. My 19" monitor has DVI and VGA slots (blue and white respectively) but when I try to use only the DVI cord the monitor doesn't work. Only the VGA slot works.

I researched the 5750 and it doesn't have VGA but dual DVI slots. Will the card work with my monitor?

I'm also curious if my case will fit it (most likely yes) since it blocks the adjacent expansion slot.

    Re: Upgrading PSU + GPU

white is usually DVI (digital) the blue is the older Analog (VGA) connection. Most video cards come with an adapter (DVI to VGA) in case your monitor does not support digital. Most Digital monitors support either DVI or VGA, and automatically detect which is getting the video signal (plugged into video card). Some monitors you have to manually set it to your desired connection type (check user manual). Worst case senario ur monitors defective and can only run on analog, and ur video card does not come with a adapter, in which case you need to buy one like this. Either way it will work out fine.

About the fit, looks like you should have loads of room. I would consider getting a 5770 though if you want DX11, if not id go with 4870 or 4850 (they both perform better than 5750).

    Re: Upgrading PSU + GPU

Given that 5750-5770 difference is only about $20, I'd go with a 5770.    Both are rather low-power cards.

Far as PSU goes, I'd get something in 550-700W range from Tier 1-2 in PSU forum.   Can get something nice for $60-90 that'll last you a long time.
