I bought this laptop:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220566 yesterday for school and gaming and am waiting for it to arrive. My home uses a satellite connection for its broadband and I have my wife's' computer and mine hooked to a 4 port switch with the satellite modem taking up a third slot. I would like to know what I need to do to use my satellites wireless capability in my home? What equipment do I need and what would be best? I am a fairly knowledgeable home user but have no experience with wireless and this is in fact my first new computer in 5 years. I will be putting windows 7 pro (64bit) on this laptop while my wife and I will continue to use XP pro on the desktops. Will this be an issue? I couldn't resist this laptop at $100 off and free shipping it is amazing and I want to get the most out of it. Any information would be of great help.

Drop the router for one of these.

Cheapest is tried and true, but only 54kbps.  Probably discontinued.

Second two are at least 108kbps.  But I do not know if your laptop supports dual band (the most expensive option), or is draft-N -- most likely.   

So hook this up in place of my current switch and it will do the job?

 

So get a router with 4 wired plugs and one wireless and that is all I need? I thought that the various flavors B G and N should be taken into consideration as well. I am still waiting to buy one because I am not sure what I need. Is the fact that it has a wireless internal card and bluetooth an invitation to newby frustration? Should I get a usb wireless card with the router? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yep a router with 4 plugs and wireless is all ya need your notebook has a built in wireless card so its not a problem all you'll need to do is run wire to your other comps...if you're looking for a suggestion for a router i have this linksys and it works great for me with a similar set up...2 wired desktops and 2 lappys i keep connected through the wireless

I bought this router from the three that FascistNation recommended: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127215 it came with a combo deal with this little number: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839314001 for a total of 63 bucks with shipping. I will post again if/when I get it up and running. I'm not sure I'll use the card but after I get the router going I will play with it.

I had a problem getting the DLink DIR-655 started because of my satellite connection. I called D-Link and was quickly connected with someone who got me up and running in 30 minutes or so. The router works great and my laptop can be used in every room of my home wirelessly. I haven't even bothered to use the card that came with the combo deal and will probably use it with my daughters netbook. Thanks for all your help guys.
