Can anyone advise if simply swapping the fan for a quiet 3rd party one helps?   I've Googled a bit but can't find a definitive outline of things to do to cure it.

  best way to quiet down a 2001 Mac G4 desktop would be to submerge it in 4 feet of water and build a new system

!!  No argument there  :  )  Problem is it's mothershipping a full gauntlet of their semi-pro hardware and software (ProTools (with hardware), Photoshop, much more) that run fine on it for their needs and would require full-on updates (as in the thousands) that aren't necessary if I put anything new in its place.

 $75 of fan and case mods will get me through to the summer at least  :  )
