Want to build a 1U Server, looking for something nice with great value.  Don't want to pay 2x for absolute latest technology.  Over whelmed with the options out there and looks like first decision to cut down on choices is to determine the CPU desired, which would cut down on systems considerably.  Server for Windows, IIS, Sharepoint, MS SQL Server, any suggestions?

Intel Xeon 5500 series

Intel Xeon 5400/5300/5200/5100 

Intel Xeon 3400 Series

Atom, Core2 Xeon.....

Biggest factors to keep in mind when shopping for any processor:

Socket type. Later the style the better.

Speed is important, but not as important as:

The number of cores.  HT or not.

Amount of cache.  I mean a process that runs 3GHz with say 4mb of cache is going to get outrun by a 2.6 GHz chip with 8mb.

FSB also plays a factor, but be sure to bundle that with decent speed RAM.

Once you compare those particulars, you can then base a good purchase decision.
