    No MCE

New to this business - just want a PC tuner card (PCI-E) to watch TV on computer (recording not necessary).  I have cable TV coaxial from the wall (no cable box).  Just bought an

ACER Combo ATSC/CLearQAM/NTSC Hardware MPEG-2 encoder PCIe card with 3D Comb Filter,

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (this is where I made my mistake - I don't have MEC, only XP Home)

         USA Model # MTVCOMG2W

Is there any FREE software that I can use to make this card work with XP Home ?

If not, any suggestions for a basic tuner card ?

    Thanks for any help.

Go to http://www.avermedia-usa.com/AVerTV/ and click on downloads.

Then follow the prompts and get the xp download.

Give it a try. If that fails check your services and see if one of them is disabled.

Good luck. I do not own this card and honestly do not know if this will help you at all.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I downloaded that software, but AVerMedia tells me that software will not work with the OEM version I have (don't know how I ended up with that one - ordered from NewEgg).

Guess I will have to get another card.  Any suggestions ?

A stand alone tv app like MythTV or BeyondTV would would.  I think they both have trial versions so you can try them out to see it they do the trick for you.

    I 2nd sjr.

MythTV (free & open source) or BeyondTV (commercial).

I can only personally vouch for BeyondTV because I have used it for years but you might wanna give MythTV a shot considering it's free, you might like it.

I have tried Media Portal (http://www.team-mediaportal.com/).  It seems to work nice.

Apparently it's skinnable, here is someone using it with a different skin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL2rS72_cpA
