    Memory suggestions for ASUS Motherboard

I went to ASUS site and they do not have an updated list of qualified memory vendors. I am looking at the Patriot at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220425&guid=53bc7cce4a7341d1a879ee043b7d6812 Anyone know of any compatibility issues? I have an ASUS P5QL-EM

Re: Memory suggestions for ASUS Motherboard

Qualified memory vendors are a very small group compared to compatible memory vendors. They only test with certain brand memory (probably based mostly on backroom deals), but the large majority function equally well. As long as it meets or under exceeds (I know, it sounds weird...) specs, you are set. For example, that board supports up to 1066 MHz memory, which means if you go above that, it may work (if motherboard downclocks memory correctly, but this is never guaranteed so also not recommended). You can generally go below the limit without any problems (800, 667, 533) or go straight on at the limit (1066). That Patriot memory should work no problem. Sad how much DDR2 has gone up in price, but memory prices are very upside down bell-curved (start high, go low, end high).

Re: Memory suggestions for ASUS Motherboard

I'm running G.Skill, Corsair and Mushkin in my Asus boards (3 different boards, of course, I don't mix)

Only thing I've ever heard of with Asus boards and memory problems is with OCZ (requires higher voltage than the motherboard supports sometimes) and ADATA (Just general corruption issues). Anything else should be fine.

I predict DDR2 prices to continue going up now that Intel has moved their entire market over to DDR3. It's a really good idea to become an early adopter of DDR3, if you can afford it.  At the lower speeds and CAS timings, DDR3 already is cheaper than many DDR2 sticks now and prices will only get better for DDR3.

    Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAID

I never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.
