Manually controlling the display on screen

Hey guys! here again for another question waiting to be answered!

I just recently finish building my HTPC, and I'm very happy with the performance. However, there's this slight problem about it. When using it on a 50"
HDTV, the display doesn't cover the entire screen. There are a few display settings for the tv itself (such as Expand, Standard, etc. all on 1080i), but all it does is either stretches is to the point you where you can't see the lower right shortcuts and the start menu, or it becomes even more narrow.

I know for a fact that if I use the Nvidia controller, I can manually control the display on the screen. It gives me the option to "fix" how far vertically or horizontally I want the display to be. Unfortunately for me, I am unable to use the Nvidia controller since I am not using an Nvidia graphics card.

Is there another program I can use aside from the Intel tv? All solutions are welcome!

Re: Manually controlling the display on screen

Is this a LCD TV or Plasma?

If it is yes no furthur configuation is necessary. You just need to do one thing:

Set the resolution to the TV's native resolution.

For example, if your TV has a native resolution of 1920x1080, make sure you set the resolution on your HTPC to that.

The whole adjusting and aligning features are for CRT TV's which never really map right because they are not mapped to pixels.

Re: Manually controlling the display on screen

    Hey Ironman77,

My tv is actually a Mitsubishi WD 52327 DLP. As for the native resolution, I think its only 1280 x 720, even then, the HTPC is getting it wrong.

[EDIT] I would also like to add that I use the HTPC to watch Bluray movies. if I were watching a Bluray DVD on it, would changing the resolution, in anyway, affect the quality?

Re: Manually controlling the display on screen

Well with a rear projection type TV there are really no pixels to map to so you are goin to have a hard time getting it perfect.

If the TVs native resolution is 1280x720 start by making sure you set your HTPC to 1280x720.

Then it will be up to you to screw with the alignment in the control panel.

Setting the HTPC to anything other than the TVs native resolution will result in reduced quality on the TV.

Re: Manually controlling the display on screen

Very insightful, thank you! I'll play around with the tv then. I'll check back on this in a few minutes to tell you if things work out or if more problems arise. How about the Bluray itself when watching a movie: Will the quality be just as good as a high resolution, or be worse on a lower resolution, or will it not even affect it at all? That's the main reason why I even created a Bluray :(

Lowering the resolution didn't work, infact it made everything even smaller.

Re: Manually controlling the display on screen

Ahh still no solution to my problem. Is there a software that can align/stretch (whatever you want to call it) the displayto however I want I want it to be? I'm looking for a software similar to Nvidia Control Panel where it gives you a selection to center the display or to stretch it vertically and horizontally.

Re: Manually controlling the display on screen

In one post you mentioned 1080 but then you said the resolution of the TV was 1280x720. That doesn't make sense.

If the TV is a 1080i/1080p set than the native resolution will be 1920x1080. Set it to that.

I do not know of any 3rd party software that does what you are asking, but that doesn't mean they are not out there.
