    Router choice help pls.

ok all you egpert guys, I need your advice here and I have no expertise in this area.  I want to get a router (from the little I read I guess the N range would be best) for my cable modem so that my blackberry has wifi access.  I have T-mobile but am not interested in their hokey all in one plan.

Ideally I would like to just use for my desktop computer and blackberry for the moment.  In the near future I may change desktops or add laptop.  So if possible I would like something to keep that option open so I don't have to change.  On a whim, I bought a router at walmart a while back.  I don't recall the man, only that it was a  cheapy g.  I could not get it set up for some reason but I didn't try real hard either.  However, I just returned it.

Now enter the blackberry and i want the wifi access.  So my question(s) is do I need a wireless router or not?  I do not have a wireless card in my desktop but that could change if I upgrade at later time or add laptop.  And what is the best one I could buy for my needs.  I am not gamer or anything like that.

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would go with a cicso, that is what I use newegg is pricy on theirs, but I got my for 60 bucks. They last longer and you get your moneys worth. My old router took a surge during a thunder storm, then a friend set me up with a cisco, does not crash as much.

That is what Wi-Fi- is wireless access so yes you would need a wireless router for wireless access its that simple. Wireless N is ok and this is if you game or want to broad cast movies from one location to another. But for general use I would just stick with a wireless G.

I do not have a wireless card in my desktop but that could change if I upgrade at later time or add laptop

The average router today that is wireless regardless of make has 4 LAN ports on them so as for the desktop you can hardwire (RJ-45 cable) to the router without a problem. as for the laptop a majority of them are now wireless and that also will connect. And well needless to say the Laptop, desktop and the blackberry can all be connected at once without a problem.

I also have a Cisco router at home but I do not recommend it for a novice user at all, especially if you need to telnet in to it. Cisco is really not for beginners to use, so use their home product like Linksys. Also the WRT54G series is great for home uses that just need the basics.

    Re: Router choice help pls.

    wow!  thank you guys!!

I had bought a Netgear wireless N WNR2000 at Walmart (complusive shopper ).  It was easy setup but I'm a little concerned about security.  And from what I am reading it seems I could do a lot better price wise and routerwise.

I must say I can't complain about it YET, I just set it up yesterday and had every intention of returning but wanted to see how it worked.  I had bought a G a while back that I could not get connected to save my life.   So far, almost too easy to set up and no probs so far.

I may be looking to get a new desktop or laptop soon, as this desktop has become posessed or something.

I see good things written about linksys but you cisco peeps don't recommend for me, correct?

I'm looking at the Newegg recertified Netgear step up from this one.  I don't need the bells and whsitles so much as it is just for my blackberry.  But in a month or so I MAY add laptop.  I bought a toshiba laptop A355 16" a few months back but hated it.  It was even too heavy for my lap.  I wanted it for when I was in hospital, but I just couldn't believe how awkward it was for me.  It looked so much smaller and better in Best Buy!

Should I stick with what I have or try the newegg recertified one.  I don't want to have to replace router in 6 months time to accomodate laptop IF that comes to pass.  AND security is paramount for me as well.

    Thanks so much guys!!

Well how much did you pay for it? As for security which part of it are you concerned about?

Ok what?????????? Linksys yes, Cisco umm no. Don't confuse the two one if for home networks (Linksys) the other is mainly for SOHO and above (Cisco).

As for recertified they are ok but I would buy new hardware just in case. And the reason is there could have been an issue with that router sent back to the company and they only fix what was wrong with it. Other then that the product still has most of the same hardware since day one.

    any thoughts on a Linksys WRT610N ?

The Linksys WRT610N is not a bad router at all great for home.
