Open the device manager from controll panel / administrative tools. uninstall the drive, reboot, it should pick it right up.

Ok i did everything you stated above and everything did go as you intended.  i uninstalled and when i re logged the pc did in fact recognized the optical drive.   Only problem is that the drive still does not realize there is a cd (music, movie or program) or dvd inside of it.  Like if i open My Computer and click on my optical drives icon, there is nothing extra there when it should have a new icon for whatever the cd/dvd is.

So that leads me to this.... is my drive dead?  do i need to buy a new optical drive?  if so, what should i get?

    Here is my current rig

I would try a different data cable on the drive incase yours went bad, and try a few different CD's in it incase either of those are bad. if still no, then it would be pretty easy to condemn the drive.

You could get any optical drive you like, even a blu-ray if you want one. just make sure you get the right interface ( IDE or SATA )

Yea i tried a few different cd's and dvd and program cd's and still no dice.  i dont have other cables to try that suggestion.. (i should tho as a godd pc owner and someone trying to be a DIYer)

I believe my OD is a sata link.  could you double check for me so i dont buy the wrong item?  also not looking to drop a lot of cash since im buying Win7 and 8 gigs of ram but would like to get the drive ordered at the same time since shipping costs can be shared with other order..  maybe 30 to 40 bucks on a OD sounds about right??? or is that too cheap?  I dont really watch movies on my pc.  all i need it for is to burn cd's, load programs and play music.

    Thanks bro!

I'd grab a new cable while your at it just incase.

If your hard drive is SATA you could just swap cables between the two, if it won't boot to windows, I guess its bad, lol.
