I just set up a home network but can't get any signal to my router.
Here's the setup:
I'm using a linksys cable gateway (WGT200 I think?) which will be in the basement where the cable comes in.
I sent cat6 data cable up along the chimney to the attic and down the walls into upstairs bedrooms where they terminate in rj45 wall jacks. The ends in the basement terminate in rj45 connectors to plug into the gateway. The total length of data cable I'm guessing is like 30'-50' as a guess.
So I plugged the cable into the gateway and got the indicator lights I was expecting, but when I plugged in the individual rj45s for each pc, nothing. The light for each port should come on but it doesn't, and obviously there's no internet on the pcs.
To test it, I took the gateway upstairs to one of the bedrooms and hooked the cable directly into the gateway and plugged the network cable in, voila! Network connectivity.
I tested each data line with a testing kit and was getting signal from the basement to the wall jacks, so any idea why I'm not getting network connectivity in the basement as expected, when everything seems to have been connected properly?
One theory is that the cat6 cable has to be terminated the same way on both ends (jack to jack, or rj45 to rj45) I have it set up rj45 in basement and jeck upstairs. Another theory is maybe I need a signal booster to get the signal through that length of cable?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
