How can I improve a wireless connection?

I just bought a Zonet wireless 802.11g USB 2.0 adapter     http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833130111   to use with a zyxel wireless router.Although my computer is only one floor above the router,I cant get more than 20-30% of a connection. Having that small of a  connection makes it impossible to do any gaming, or even go on the internet.Any suggestions on how to improve my connection?

    Thanks

If it's shoved in the back of a corner, bring it out and set it as high as you can.

Otherwise, it could be that "one" floor means considerably more distance than you imagined. Get a better router or wireless adapter specifically designed for longer distances.

    1.  Put as little in between the computer's antennas and the routers as possible...it already has to go through a floor.  Moving the computer around in your room may improve the signal strength and SNR.

    2.  Make sure you are on the non-compeatingest channel available.

    3.  Some routers can up their transmission power to 100%...this will heat them up.  Make sure both your computer's and the router's are set to max. transmission.

    4.  Buy an external amplified antenna for your computer.

Are there antennas for usb wireless adapters? I looked on newegg, and didnt see any.

Also,is it better to have the adapter up high, or down near the floor? The rounter is a floor below me.

    Thanks

If it's below you, try flipping the adapter upside down [antenna facing down] and clear any blocking items from the router.

Also, get yourself an 8-10' USB extension cable and move the adapter around the room.  You would be surprised how this can effect the signal strength.  You basically need to have the least amount of mass between the router and USB dongle to get the best connection.

Re: How can I improve a wireless connection?

Thanks for telling me about the USB extension cables,it seems like those would help alot. I just have one question about the extension cables.I would need 10-15 feet of usb extension cable. With that much cable, would I need a "USB repeater cables"? I have no idea what it is, but I heard on some site that you would need one if you are going to use alot of USB cable.Would I need one of those as well as a extension cable?

    Thanks

Re: How can I improve a wireless connection?

The reason I referenced an 8-10' cable is because anything above that might hurt the amount of power supplied to the device.  This might cause problems.  There are USB extension cables that have boosters but I don't know how effective they are.  Especially the ones without a power supply.

Re: How can I improve a wireless connection?

10' should be fine though? If the cable is 10' and the wire from the wireless device is 3-5' long, wouldnt that be to long, since  its over 10 feet?
