Re: Help chosing GPS - first timer

Ok the top GPS's are Tom Tom, Garmin, and Magellan. The Idea of the GPS is 1 not to get lost, And 2, A to B unless you set up POI. Some will transmit traffic information. Some will use the FM radio in the car to help guide the drive to the location. Trip calculator ect...

Things you might want to think about first or ask your dad.

What type of mapping does he need? US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Or US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe ect...

Where is the most use of the GPS in town or cross country?

    Budget?

All of them Talk in English that is not a problem at all, When you get the GPS you set it up once it first boots, and in there you can pick the language.

Re: Help chosing GPS - first timer

the principal maps needed is US, Mexico is optional tho, and i think the most use would be inside CA since outside CA he would take a flight maybe.

dont know about the budget, he just wants a cheap one since he dont travel much

then what ur saying is any GPS will have chinese language?

from the prices of the july top pick, would it be similar buying a EEEpc that has GPS and use that one? since their battery last longer

need to pay extra for GPS usage or something? or only for updates of map?

Re: Help chosing GPS - first timer

Ok just look at the ones that state US, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

Well we have to know the budget.

Some GPS's units do have all languages depending on how much you want to spend. My Gamin Nuvi 255 has all the languages installed by default.

The prices are still the same today, GPS is not cheap, ok well the refrbs are. But mine cost me $299.

Yes on some services you do have to pay extra and Tom Tom I think is the only one out there that will allow free map updates for their GPS's. The rest you have to pay for.

Re: Help chosing GPS - first timer

    What dialect of Chinese?

My TomTom has a free Cantonese voice-over that you can download right out of TomTom Home..  But I think it doesn't speak street names or anything like that.. Street names are always done with the GPS's english voice. There are also dozens and dozens of Spanish voice-overs that were done, some good, some not so good..

With the TomTom, you can do your own voice over..  You just record your own voice saying things like "left" "right" "ahead" "turn" and so on, and it will use those if you want..  So you can have your directions given to you with your own voice.. Or your wife's voice.. Or your children's voice or whatever you want..

I think the Mandarin Chinese for Tomtom costs a bit of money, $20-$30 or so..  You can browse and buy it right from Tomtom home.

Edit: To be more specific, the only updates you get for free with TomTom are when there are mistakes in the map (where the Tomtom thinks a 2-way road is really a 1-way )..You can mark a map error, fix it yourself and then share it with other people.. These are called "Map share updates".and are only updates that you share with other people who have the EXACT same version of the map. When you plug the TomTom into the computer, you get all the latest mapshare updates for your map automatically.

All new roads, bridges, constructions, etc.  require you to purchase a new map to get them, but TomTom does offer an update service where you pay a monthly fee to always have the latest map..I buy a new map once every 2 years, the free map share updates are great.

    Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAID

I never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.

Re: Help chosing GPS - first timer

Look at the XL340 as that is the lowest model # that supports IQ routes and advanced lane guidance..

If you want the English spoken computer voice, then go for the XL340-S.. If you're going to be going Chinese all the way and don't care if the TomTom does not say street names, then go with the XL340..
