The E8400 can typically OC in the range of 3.6 to 4.0 ghz on air cooling.  Just don't get too aggressive on raising the voltage.

The official maximum operating core temperature for an Intel E8400 is 72.4c but I'd advise you to keep it under 65c @ full load for safe overclocking. you should reach up to 4Ghz without a problem.

I am running an E6700 processor at 3.6 ghz with a $10 Masscool heat sink and fan.  My CPU and heat sink are lapped but I would expect an E8400 to do 3.6-4.0 ghz even with the stock fan.

The maximum core temperature isn't quite 72.4C, likely to be higher but isn't clearly defined.

Thermal Specification:  The thermal specification shown is the maximum case temperature at the maximum Thermal Design Power (TDP) value for that processor. It is measured at the geometric center on the topside of the processor integrated heat spreader.

Re: new system, good OC, how far can i go?

i certainly wouldn't attempt to do 4ghz on a E8400 with just the stock hsf i don't care what the TDP says  65c would be where i would back it off    on stock i'd say 3.6ghz is about the max

    E8400 @ 4.2ghz idle 30c load 50-53c 3x 640gb
