    Suggestion: Revising reviews

I've noticed that sometimes the NewEgg customer reviews are not actually reviews.  Rather, someone will just post a "review" to respond to another reviewer.  Furthermore, sometimes a comment is so incredibly ignorant that it needs to go away.  I've seen comments with things like "1 out of 116 people found this helpful."  An example of this would be the guy who took an egg off his monitor because his desk was too small for it and the keyboard.

Both of these things take away from the value of customer reviews.  I suggest 1) reviews stop counting (egg-wise) and the post is greyed out when the "not helpful" to "helpful" ratio is rediculous, say 10-1.  2) Allow for more discussion on a piece of hardware aside from the reviews. This helps people resist the urge to write reviews when they just want to say something to/about another user, and it lets people who aren't/can't review the hardware talk about it.  Another option might be a "nuetral" rating.  Instead of rating from 1-5, you choose to not have your vote added to the total.

The first is a no-brainer and not too difficult.  The second suggestion is more difficult, but might be worth considering in some form.

    yes nice suggestion ThomasW

I always take reviews with a grain of salt and some products with good reviews are not that good sometimes but to review products in a neutral way is very hard as we all know.

    Re: Suggestion: Revising reviews

The reviews are a joke and have absolutely no credibility. Do not base a purchase on the reviews. I'm not saying don't purchase from Newegg, by all means do. Newegg does a lot well, but the reviews are highly questionable as far as objectivity.

Newegg screens the reviews and tailors the results to suit their own marketing purposes. If you ask they will freely admit this. Your suggestions are good ones, but first they need to stop misleading people. The easiest thing for them to do would be to rename the "customer reviews" to "customer endorsements". That way they can be above board, and justify editing out the reviews they don't like.

    Bogus reviews...

I really think something should be done about these bogus reviews..

Here's somebody who gave a graphics card a terrible rating... Why? Because it was out of stock..

I think there should be a way to report / remove bogus reviews that have nothing to do with the quality of the product..

    Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAID

I never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.

    Re: Bogus reviews...

    Pros: It exists

Cons: It exists SOMEWHERE ELSE ENTIRELY. Seriously how does ATi have channel supply problems with these? They knew that these would be popular, nVidia is months behind on next gen GPUs. Possibly a whole year even.

To see the number of vendors for this drop from like 8 to 2, to me at least, says ATi doesn't have production capacity for this card.

Other Thoughts: I would love to buy one. Scratch that I would like to order two. But can't, because finding one is like trying to find a needle in a haystack covered in concrete and guarded by rat ninjas.

18 out of 75 people found this review helpful. Did you?

    Maybe not.

    Re: Suggestion: Revising reviews

    Hi All,

ThomasW - Thank you very much for the suggestions! We've discussed several of these options with regards to reviews, and item intelligence in general. You can expect some site enhancements in 2010 that will address some of these areas of improvement. We're hoping to integrate the EggXpert forums to some extent, to provide an additional resource for gathering tips and tech support for any given product.

For now, we do have the review filters (example) that you can use to sort by rating, helpfulness, or whther or not the item was purchased at Newegg; using these you can screen out the "1 out of 116 people found this helpful" type reviews.

AverageJoeII - we at Newegg do freely disclose our Review Guidelines, but I've never heard of any employee stating that we screen/edit/remove reviews to suit our marketing purposes. In fact, this is not the case, and we've always taken pride in the fact that we allow our customers to post thier feelings about products whether they be good or bad.

If a review does not violate the guidelines linked above, it will remain on the site. If you find a review that violates these guidelines, we encourage you to report it to us. If you have any questions about the review process, please feel free to ask!

    Best Regards,
    Paul

    Re: Suggestion: Revising reviews

Thanks for posting that link Sid, I've reported the review to our WM team and it will be removed (because it violates our Review Guidelines).

    Cool

    Cheers,
    Paul
