need to fix current problem before buying new rig

hello. so i have been planning on buying a new gaming rig and on the verge of decding to purchase, my laptop i use for college got hit by something that is at the very least annoying. and scary....

i beilive i know the source of where i got the problem. because i havce delt with it once before this week. and was stupid enough to go back. and it unfortunatly either found a way to remove the convienance that i had to remove it last time. that or i just got unlucky.

where i think i got it? well this site for viewing video. i namely use it for anime. but its called megavideo.com, and when you find a video you want to watch it brings you to a page where with a media viewer just like youtube. but you have to click the play button on the center of where the movie is going to play. i assume this is because they log you're ip so they can limit how much you watch with out a subscription.

anyways when you click the button it flashes red for a sec and then green and you hit it again to play. and the first time you hit it it typically pops up an additional website which if not closed quickly ends up freezing my comp and the problem started after i got the to end task on ie after it froze doing this. the first time i fixed the problem with a simple system restore to a previous date. but now it has either wiped all my previous restore date data. or i was just unlucky and for some reason it got deleted or something. so i cant do that this time. which is really frustrating. because now i have no previous date to restore to....

so an online friend told me to try the free 30 day trial of the antivirus/firewall program he uses.  so i downloaded trendmicro and it did a quick scan first and fixed or removed 60 something problems. and then i did a full and it took an hour and a half to do that and fixed or removed over 100 problems. but the current problem is still alive and well.

the problem is difficult for me to explain but it seems to be based out of the toolbar down to the bottom right of the screen. where the clock and several mini various mini icons are placed. it keeps poping up the speech bubbles saying things like "windows has discovred that computer is infected" which concerns me because while i am not an english major, im pretty sure it should be saying that the. or that this, or that you're computer. not just  " that computer" and i would think that if this were truely a windows advisory it would have had somone paied  to make that sound right. but i could be wrong and maybe that is proper. but anyways. even after the trendmicro scans it still does this. but that is just one aspect. it also has its own little icon of a blue shield with a fat white line running diagonally from the top right of the shield to the bottom left. and it is called "antivirus system pro"

it also places an alert to the bottom right that is a white box with a red boarder and a red circle with a white ! in the center of it. this is along the top. and the box says " INFILTRATION ALERT  your computer is being attacked by an internet virus, it could be a password'stealing attack, a jrojan-dropper or similar.  DETAILS attack from: 146.138.224.195,port 16208 attacked port :24926  threat" win32/nuqel.e  do you want to block this attack" and it gives a yes and a no buttom. to which if you click no, it goes away but comes back several seconds later with a different name like "bankerfox.a" as the threat. i havent tried clicking yes because i am not sure i trust this as legitimate software considdering i do not recall having this installed. and its not on my other comp of witch are running windows xp

it also does a windows box in the center caying "Application cannot be executed, the file wmiadap.exe is infected do you want to activate antivirus software now" if i hit yes it takes me to a webstie for antivius system pro. saying its approximatly 50 bucks and wanting me to buy it. which i dont believe at all because its partially installed itself on my comp wihtout my wanting it to and now it wants me to buy it...... im thinking its a fishing virus or something.

it also generates a few websites that it turns on ie to go to every few mins.  specificall "porno.org/"  "adult.com/" "porno.com/" on and a viagra on....

so anyways. i even checked the add remove programs from the control panel, and theres no such program as "antivirus system pro " installed on it. to remove... so i dont know where to start

please help me fix this problem so i can get this thing working again. the only other thing i know to do would be to dig out the backup disks and wipe the damn thing and reinstall windows on it. which i dont want to do mainly because everytime i do it on this laptop i end up having to send it back to hp to have them fix the freaking device drivers for the synaptic qiuckbar for audio and video controls on the thing.....

off to work. maybe somone will know more and be able to tell me what to do to fix this when i get back from work. thanks

Re: need to fix current problem before buying new rig

Sounds like your browser got hijacked...

Also, sounds like you're getting those fake anti-virus software popups.. Basically an advertistement that looks like a windows warning box telling you that your computer is infected.. When you click it, it brings you to a website and wants you to fork over money.. It's all just a scam to sell fake anti-virus software.. Even worse, is that what you download is a virus itself...  ie: Anti-virus software that is really a virus..

If I were you, I'd download AVAST, AdAware, and Spybot Search and Destroy as soon as possible and run a full system scan with each of those programs..  Don't run any other software and don't click on any more speech bubbles.

Also, run Firefox instead of Internet Explorer..  Firefox will detect a lot of the riskier sites and warn you before you go there... Preventing you from accidentally downloading fake anti-virus.

     http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

    http://www.avast.com/

    http://www.lavasoft.com/

Megaupload.com has been known to put up advertisements that link directly to viruses and scam websites..  Some of these popup advertisements are designed to look exactly like Windows popup boxes, warnings, speech bubbles and error messages.. So you have to be careful if you travel there.. The best thing to do is stop using IE and stop installing ActiveX controls on every website you visit.

Edit: Forgot to mention.. Get rid of that trendmicro It doesn't detect much and there are better free alternatives out there.

Re: need to fix current problem before buying new rig

thanks. the spybot took care of the problem. so i went ahead and installed the avast and adaware also.

went ahead and put all three programs on my desktop also. which alread had a version of CA antivirus/firewall/ect. and a version of norton internet security. which is a problem because avast wants it gone before it can function. and i cannot find a way to remove the norton. i manged to get rid of the ca. but the norton i can locate on my add remove programs via the control panel. but it will not give me the option to remove it.

i can however find it under mycomputer>c-drive>program files> notron antivirus. and symantic something.  i was wondering if it would  be wise to just drag those two files over into my recycling bin. or if it would do damage or is a taboo to delete from program files. my desktop while old hasent given me any real big virus problems. but it is slow on starting up and gives me several error messages on startup. so i can take it or leave it as far as removing norton to use avast.

but what do you think i should do to it?

Shouldn't have installed norton.. Most people have to delete their entire operating system to get rid of it..  Some people spend hours playing around with removal tools and the registry editor, reinstalling Windows is faster..  Norton is horrible.. I think Norton made a removal tool to help get rid of their software, but it still leaves bits and pieces of it behind all over the place..

The newer versions have been ALLOT more forgiving in that aspect (since 360 2.0).  They do still make a removal tool just incase you have problems removing it though, its only incase the uninstall feature is corrupted somehow.
