    Ubuntu installation error

So this originally started with a Windows 7 installation, but it seems to be happening with every OS I try to install. I've tried Vista, XP, 7, and now I decided to try my old Ubuntu 7 live CD and I got the error "Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0"

Then it keeps doing that with a different double value before the same error message, and eventually my screen goes blank and I have to turn the power off with my power button. In Windows installation this would happen without any warning... this is stressing me out because I can't install any OS on my system anymore, when I've already installed it onces... I've found dozens of threads on the internet but most responses are like "I have this problem too" or, "go to the terminal and do this..." but I can't even get that far because the live CD won't even boot. I hope someone can provide me with assistance.

    Re: Ubuntu installation error

'Erm, that's a fancy way of saying that it can't read from a floppy disk....

Why it would be trying to boot to a floppy disk, I have no idea.. It sounds like your Linux bootloader is really screwed up and misconfigured.

    Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAID

I never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.

    Re: Ubuntu installation error

I have installed the System Using Wubi and holy moly I hope my pc doesn't go to a black screen while I write this so I have no time for correct grammar, after 9.04 successfully after leaving my pc on for like 10 minutes a black screen comes. I can't even boot into windows normally anymore, even in safe mode it dies within 5 - 10 minutes, I can't do memory test either what's going on!!

but I think it's  more than a video card problem because from what I've read is you should put on mp3's, and then if it the video card then you will still hear the music, you just won't see the screen, but when it goes black, I can't hear the music any more either. I have updated my video card driver in 9.04 and it seems to be working, I don't know what the problem is... maybe HDD controller, maybe hard drive,

how do I disable the floppy disk in the Gigabyte F5 bios? maybe that is the problem

a 500gb Toshiba HDD (vista on this), a 32gb patriot warp v2 SSD (ubuntu on this), and a LG DVD burner cd drive.

    Re: Ubuntu installation error

    Go into the bios,

usually on the first screen, or first option your see your disk and then 1.44" Floppy look for that select it and select disable, off, no floppy something along those lines

    But honestly.

Ubuntu 7.04 doesn't look for the floppy, a floppy error wouldn't crash your system

    K easy thing to check

Synronise your clock to the computer, wait for it to crash

    Reboot

    then check dmesg

    dmesg|grep HH:MM

so if it died at 4:35:45

    dmesg|grep 4:35

    I'd also look at 4:34 and 4:36

you can also check for error but this can be a little more tricky

    dmesg|grep -i error
    dmesg|grep -i fail

put the out put of these commands, if you can figured it out from reading them, at the end of this post.

Sound like a hardware problem, but dmesg could point you in the direction of the problem for you to fix it.

My best guess with this little bit of information(especially since you say it crashes on  memory test)

MEMORY or MOTHERBOARD, less likely processor.

Also I see you have ssd, make sure you have no_atime or noatime in your fstab

But again, ssd shouldn't crash your system on idle, when you go to load a new program not in memory, possibly could cause it to freeze. But just leave the system idle and wait for it to crash. Possibly while at a console, cause a serious error will be spit to console.

(TO SEE The actual console hold ctrl+alt+f1[f1-f6 are usually your getty ports, and f7 is usually reserved for X but I've also seen f6 and f8 and you can of course change this yourself])
