    are these compatible?

Hi newbie here I am building my own pc and I was wondering if anybody could tell me if these will fit together?

also if they do fit can anyone recamend a good cpu heatsink for them?

    thank you

    Re: are these compatible?

should be, but why are you using a P4 on a $150 board?

    Re: are these compatible?

They should work but the specs of the mobo website only lists 2 Cases they recomend for that mobo. Now as to the heatsink and fan there are many that will fit the mobo and cpu the big question is will they fit the case? You will have to check for someone that owns that case and find out how much room there is or check with the manufacturers website...

    Re: are these compatible?

Because Its actually my 12 y/o sons first build and we are trying to keep the prices down. the shipping is killing me. we started out with a BTX mobo and accidentally ordered a bulk processor w/o the heatsink and now can not find a heatsink to fit the btx board. weve had two different heatsinks now and by their description they should have fit but they dont. I called and wrote 9 local computer repair place to see if they had a heatsink lying around that would fit the BTX and someone of them sent me a link for the very one I have that doesnt fit!

so now , the plan is to scrap the btx and try to recover the project with as little as possible money. ive already had to return a 50# case (40 bucks shipping)....another hideous story.

its all a learning experience. so Im trying to keep my cool.

everyone we talk to says "i used to build pc's" ...and i really did think we could do it. so, now im trying to get some info from any loving soul to help me not spend anymore money.

    your imput is greatly appreciated....

    Re: are these compatible?

Thanks for your input. I am actually going along with my 12y/o sons idea to build his own pc...and its slowly becoming a money sinkhole.

we started out with a btx mobo and a bulk processor (the P4) but it came w/o the heatsink. my fault, I did not read the fine print on that one....now we cant find a heatsink to match the btx mobo so the plan is to scrap the btx and start over with an atx....trying to use what we can from the orginial orders....

    Re: are these compatible?

Hello Lisa yes they can become a sink hole when you don't quite know what is what. Now if you care to start fresh and truly would like our help to bail you out with out spending an arm and a leg please list all the parts you now have in your possesion that you are stuck with, then how much you can afford to spend and finally what you and your son want to do with this computer and we will do our best to recomend the parts you will have to buy to finish the build right. Also will you need an Operating System or do you have one if so which one?

    Re: are these compatible?

Wow. I dont know what to say. We'll list everything and go from there. We did post to another forum and got some ok's there and thought we'd be fine. I guess in the list that we provided they thought that we had a heatsink/processor combo. Thats where our problems started.

    PROCESSOR   3.4GHZ intel p4 650 800MHZ 2MB LGA775

    HEATSINK http://www.amazon.com/INTEL-S775-BTX-HEATSINK-Type/dp/B000YHG7GK

We also had to return a newegg heatsink that did not fit this odd board we have. Its still sitting in a post office in california according to the delivery confirmation tracking. The above heatsink also does not fit despite its description. The mounting holes are in the correct place but the bulky heatsink comes into contact with capacitors that surround the processor module/area.....

MOTHERBOARD Intel Motherboard 955X Express chipset BTX ( BOXD955XCSLKR )

DVDROM  TEAC DV-516EKITB 16x Internal IDE Silver DVD-ROM Drive Kit with PS2

VIDEO CARD  MSI ATI Radeon RX2400PRO 256MB DVI S-VIDEO HDTV PCI-E Video Card

PSU   Thermaltake W0070RUC TR2 Series 430W Power Supply with 2 Fans

CDROM Teac CD552G/B/S IDE CD-ROM Drive

    RAM  (20-231-110)  MEM 2Gx2|GSK F2-5300CL5D-4GBMQ R

Ack-sata Power Cable 8INCH Rohs Serial Ata Pwr Cable 15 To 4PIN

HD Seagate ST3500641AS-RK Barracuda 7200.9 500GB SATA NCQ Internal Hard Drive

OS      MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 3

    Static Strap

We had a large clear sided 50#case from newegg that was described to come with a "BTX option" but when it arrived we discovered that the "BTX option" needed to be ordered extra and when we went to order it extra, its no longer available. We had to pay the 40 bucks to return the case.

So now we have a BTX case but the whole heatsink problem. (case gateway 3502124R)

So, what Im thinking is to scrap the BTX motherboard and thus the heatsink problem and I guess the case too then.  Ive gleaned that the ram, dvd, cdrom, psu, processor, hard drive and graphics card are generally universal.

We are in need of a recommendation for a case, ATX motherboard heatsink that will fit our current inventory. I do realize that may be to much to ask the gods at this point. While I will not haggle over a few dollars , I also dont want to spend what Ive already spent. He will be using the machine for "gaming".

    Sincerest Thanks

     Lisa and Liam

    Re: are these compatible?

Sorry to say Lisa but the processor and the RAM is a no go to, I spent almost 3 hours hitting 20 sites and googling a couple dozen more for a mobo that would support what you have on hand and trying to keep cost to a minimum but everything I found was micro ATX and would not use the ram you have those that would were refurbished and they were wanting way too much $ for them. So basiclly you are going to need an ATX midtower case, a mobo, a CPU and RAM. I also went with a real cheap case that will need a second fan for the front 120mm to match the rear exhaust fan.

    Re: are these compatible?

    Wow, again.

Whats wrong with the processor? I dont think I understand. And for the RAM, pick of the sets, right?

Liam says he was "looking for at least 3.0 GHZ processor"......If the mobo says LGA775 why wont our current processor fit? (im on a learning curve here :) )

Why did the guys at GeekSquad and other forums tell me the RAM and processor would work with other boards?

The case is great, we had not come across that one.

3 hours?! Geez,  good karma coming your way....

How can I check to see that these are compatible? My question is only b/c of my recent history of poor choices and experience with parts specs written on the screen and seemingly matching but then when they get here, they dont fit. Im just wondering what the heck are we missing....how does this keep happening? Is there a glaring mistake that you see or did I just have that kind of luck that day?

Do I have any hope of selling these unusables anywhere?

    Again Sincere Thanks

    Lisa

    Re: are these compatible?

In the post below, (from build your PC sticky here at newegg)...what does the last line mean, exactly?

Is there a picture somewhere to show what this means?

    8. RESET YOUR CMOS
    Why?  Just to be Safe.
Sometimes these video cards won't jibe with what the CMOS may already have, or was previously set to.  So you may need an OLD PCI (NOT PCI-E or PCI-X Video Card).  They're available for CHEAP.
Set the reset jumper for a five count and move it back into place.

    Re: are these compatible?

Ok here is more for your learnning curve, the Pentium 4 processor is about 5 years behind the curve it is a single core not dual core type processor. They no longer make the ATX mobos for this cpu except in the Micro ATX mobos which would be limiting your build to an obsolete platform with no way to go but junk it when it breaks. Lian does not need a 3.0ghz processor if he goes dual core it will run circles around that P4 + with the stuff I have recomended you will be able to upgrade it over the next 2-4 years a lot cheaper than building him another one. If you like I will PM a couple of friends and let them voice an opinion. The Geek Squad is a bunch of lamo's who fed you a bunch of bull for a good laugh at your expense since I assume you did not buy this stuff from them, as for other forums they were going on what you had bought and not on what would happen after you tried to assemble it. You could try Ebay but whether you could sell them or not I would not know you might get a 1/3 of your money back. As for these parts being compatable you have my word and my 20 years of computer experience to back it up but as I said I know a couple of the moders on eggxpert and if you like a will PM them to check out everything and voice their opinion on the best way to go.

    Re: are these compatible?

Before I forget, Hoghauler ,your input is greatly appreciated and I thank you.

It seems he read in a PC magazine about how to build a computer. In one of those articles he read (or thinks he read) that a dual core is not as fast as the 300GHZ that he initially found. I was reading that dual core does not necessarily mean twice the speed just more application processing (im trying here:)......Our problem (that he is trying to overcome with this project) is that we get a new PC, everything zips along and then a year goes by, we have TONS of games on the computer and tons of time spent and the computer gets really slow to boot up and then the games get choppy or just shut down....at least I think that is what is on his mind....so he decided he was "gonna build " his own PC and only play games on that and the shared computer is where we would access email and weatch videos...blech. This isnt helping at all is it?

I guess I just dont fundamentally understand why a 775 processor wont fit a mobo that says 775 socket. How do I tell that RAM wont fit ? I do I tell that it will...somewhere I got lost there. I thought if the numbers matched and then I asked , that all of this would work. If the heatsink had fit , would our parts have worked together? I guess we'll never know b/c we cant get a heatsink to fit! LOL

On the rec you made processor/mobo combo, theres a disclaimer that says newegg cant guarantee that the parts are compatible. Im trigger shy now and am also wondering abt that...thus, the above questions. I thought I had it figured out. Or I wouldnt have spent the money. I knew abt BTX being out but I was thinking "hes 12 and by the time it rolls around for a new computer, we'll just get another or maybe he had learned enought to take over by then"...I just mostly want his project to work. I want the thing to turn on and play these discs and WOW and whatever. I want him to be able to say "I built that from separate parts"....sorry, went off on a mom tangent there...

    Again Sincerely Yours,

    Lisa

    Re: are these compatible?

No problem just glad to be able to help. Speed is relative here to help you understand better here is an example: lets say you are cleanning house and wiping down stuff you have 1 wet cloth and 1 dry cloth you are doing 2 things at the same time 1 hand wiping with the wet cloth and the other drying with the dry cloth. Now a single core at 3.0ghz runs very fast but it can only process 1 thing at a time, the dual core has 2 processors and can do 2 things at a time so at the end of the day the dual core has done more than the single core thus making it faster. This is over simplifiying things but I believe it is easier to understand this way.

The problem with your old computer slowing down is that you must do maintanance on it regularly, IE: delete cookies, delete history, delete out dated files, clean the registry, clean the dust from the inside of the case, use antispyware, antivirus, antimalware and do a defrag regularly if this is not done your computer will slow down and or break down.

The 775 and other sockets whether it be Intel or AMD are designed to accomadate only certain CPUs, some mobos are designed to flash the BIOS to enable other CPUs to work on that mobo (this does not apply to your BTX or the CPU you have) this design forces us as consumers to buy new stuff fairly regularly unless we buy smart in the first place or enjoy spending money or building new computers every year or 2.

Well you don't have to worry about it now that combo is gone and as for his plans on playing all those games a lot of them will no longer work on the newer systems due to the advances in technology, I know cause I still have about $5,000 of MSDOS games and programs sitting here wasting away. This is due to the fact they have gone from 8bit to 16bit to 32bit to 64bit technology.

OK. Im sure the cleaning analogy was not sexist and I think I get it and I also tried to explain it similarly to my son...really,...

Anyhoo, I am getting comflicting reports about the RAM....

    What do you think about this , assuming my current RAM will work ...(G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-5300CL5D-4GBMQ - Desktop Memory )(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231110)

Why wont a "LGA 775" processor fit into a "LGA 775 " mobo? (Im not being sarcastic here, I am really just trying to figure it out, I am really just trying to understand, and I do realize I am wearing out my welcome)

oh, and I really have actually , carefully, vacuumed....and all the other bits : defrag, delete cookies, history, spyware, etc.....

And geez, I cant see the post now and cant reply any further, except to offer thanks yet again,

    Re: are these compatible?

No you are not wearing out your welcome I just can not explain it anybetter than I did before.

That mobo will not work with your CPU or RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128356

This mobo will work with the RAM but not the CPU Newegg.com - SUPERMICRO PDSLA LGA 775 Intel 945G ATX Intel Pentium 4/Pentium 4 EE/Pentium D/Celeron D Server Motherboard - Server Motherboards)

Now for some good news I found a mobo that will work with the RAM but you will have to buy another CPU however the price of the 2 is $10 less than that 945G mobo.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138144 mobo  $70

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116072 CPU  $70 +fs

and here is the proof of the 2 being compatable from the manufacturer.
