Just bought the termal paste and some of those OKgear SaTA II cables, looked nice, also bought another CD /DVD reader drive.  Hopefully this rig will be running by Wednesday night!

P.S. whats the difference between SATA and SATA II?

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

Ok that is a good question about SATA

SATA was the first gen HDDs that is 1.5MB per sec

SATAII is the second gen for the HDD and is 3.0MB per sec.

The rig will be fine you are doing a good job of it.

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

Just as a request from Gms, I will let everyone know how my first test went.

Last night I hooked up all my componets according to a step by step guide here on the forum, which by the way was great help and I will be leaving feedback to that individual, but after all was said and done I needed some more help.  Raptorrage was generous enough to help me out last night all the way till my power test.  Which when I plugged in the PSU and then turned on the PSU, not the computer, I was alarmed with a hissing sound, a pop and some smoke.  Obviously, I turned the PSU off right away. Now I assume my PSU is fried, but I have warrenty. But what about all my other parts?  Could they be fried as well?

P.S. I will keep this updated as new things are found out!

    P.P.S. Wish me luck!

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

Well everyone, its been a long time nearly 6 months for me to complete my build.  This weekend I was able to get it up and running however one of my RAM sticks was DOA :( which took me longer than it should to diagnosis but I figured it out.  Corsair should be granting an RMA and I will soon be at stock strength 4 GB of XMS 2 ram.  All in all, despite my many RMA's to get to this point, building a PC was one of the more interesting and fun things I have done recently.  To add to the above list of parts I added Windows Vista ultimate and Nod32 antivirus.....

Funny thing is now that I am done I am starting to wonder what exactly will I do with this PC, it seems like a whole new world to have a realative performance PC.... that is with some tweaking (I hope to OC to 3.0Ghz on my Q6600)....

Last but not least, I would like to seriously thank everyone that has been involved with my PC development, with out you all this definitly could not have been possible :) Thanks you all very much!

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

Heh.  Funny thing.  I was just looking at this post not fifteen minutes ago, wondering when the next update would be.  Glad if I were of any service to you.  Perhaps you'll fold with your new PC?  It's a good cause, and won't necessarily disrupt you from what you're doing.  I think there are plenty of folding@home articles here, if you're interested in looking.

Glad you finally pulled it together.  I just finished a PC myself.  Easiest build of my career, not a single RMA, etc... But sometimes it goes one way, and sometimes the other.  At least you kept going. :)

Look forward to seeing you around. :)  Until your next build!

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

Well the good part is that it only was one stick of RAM that was DOA and not 2 of them or more. Have a lot of fun with the system glad that its up and running now for ya.

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

Well corsair approved my RMA so were well on the way to having a fully operational PC, I think for the time being tho I am going to drop the idea of water cooling and Enjoy this build.  I will TL join folding in the near future ;) It was part of my reason for this build lol.

Anybody have ideas for reduce the noise from hard drives? My PC is virtually silent - the hard drive :(

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

What type of noise is it,

    Spin up and down

    Grinding while reading or

    Vibration?

Vibration can be fixed where are the others can not.

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

I dont know how to tell, but I think it is vibration.

Its a seagate 7200.11 500 GB SATA HD, there might be some documentation regarding this somewhere.  It might just be a noisy drive.... hope not.

Re: New PC build and Needing Advice

    Hi TK:

it can be a nosier HDD but first try to put rubber grommets on the screws that will reduce vibration. Some should have come with your case the little orange round things. See if that may help. Some Seagates are known to be noisy at times as well.

    http://www.directron.com/grommet.html

If you dont have any then here are some that come in a pack of 4.
