    Re: Linux anyone

I tried out FC5 awhile ago, but I liked Synaptic/apt much better than yum in fedora. Also I seemed to be able to find a lot more deb files for what I need than rpms. Basically it came down to the fact that Ubuntu is easier to install stuff on so I went with it.

    Re: Linux anyone

I have considered the options for best distro for a new Linux user on my blog at:
    http://linuxlatitude.blogspot.com/2008/03/which-linux.html

I am sure it's controversial, given the enthusiasm some people feel for their own choice. I would welcome constructive comments on the blog, not just "mine is better than yours"  type responses.

I have run Linux since Red Hat 5.2, then Mandrake, Gentoo, Suse, Kubuntu.

Still pretty green, but have been playing around with Ubuntu for a little while. Dual boot my desk top. Running Hardy now. Have a couple of issues; printer, java, real player...not deterred. Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Linux anyone

I dual boot XP x64 and Ubuntu Hardy.  I love ubuntu and use it for most everything, but the windows is there so I can go back and play some games like Oblivion, Crysis, COD 4 etc.  If anyone knew a way I could play games under linux I would gladly wash my hands of everything microsoft Big Smile

Tired of being an "embryo". What the heck does that mean anyway?

    Re: Linux anyone

Wine is version 1.0 now and you simply add the repository and install. Oblivion and COD 4 work, but you'll have to wait a little on Crysis, or maybe help with the testing to get it working.

    Re: Linux anyone

I used wine a followed a tutorial somewhere to try and get oblivion to work but I never managed it.  Maybe I'll try again thanks Yes

Are the graphics perceptively worse when running those games on wine, with two 8800gtx's i like the eye candy lol.  Which reminds me of another question actually, is there any way to make an SLI setup run SLI under linux?

    Re: Linux anyone

Been using Linux for some time now. Used to even teach how to install in my A+ class. Debian is my choice for about 2 years as a desktop. Servers have always been debian.

How would you avoid a dual boot by putting it on a second drive?

    Options:

Don't dual boot use Linux (either back up Windows data and destroy partition or make new partition/drive and ignore windows completely on bootup)
Dual boot with Windows/Linux (same drive)
Dual boot with Windows/Linux (different drives--a little bit more tricky)

    Re: Linux anyone

yeah i realized that didnt make sense after i posted, i meant i dont want to dual boot on the same drive, im attempting separate drives right now...we'll see,  Its not my main machine so i dont really care if something messes up.

    Re: Linux anyone

There is a way to avoid having the boot loader on the same drive, but its a little tricky.

First, your bios has to support selecting which disk to boot from.

Install each OS without the other disk connected.

Put the Windows disk first and then the linux disk. Windows should now boot normally.

Try booting the second disk, if it is using the UUID instead of the device id it should work. If not you are going to have to modify the boot loader to point to the correct disk now and then you should be set.

One other suggestion is to start a new thread for a new question, numerious reasons for this.
