how to make old laptop compatible for SATA HD?

i have a dell inspiron 6000 laptop from 2005. the HD is a small and slow 60gb 5400rpm ATA HD. Since ATA is being replaced by SATA, i cannot find any sites that have 7200rpm ATA laptop HD's still in stock. i have also heard that vendors are selling the few that are left for $200 to $400 a drive (absolutely ridiculous price) because the drive manufacturers stopped making them since SATA is replacing ATA. this presents a problem for me: i want to upgrade my HD to a faster one, and since my laptop is old and is only compatible with ATA drives, the only 7200rpm ATA drives are out of stock every place that i checked. is there a way to make my laptop compatible for a SATA drive?

nope,  you can only buy a  ide  hd.

if all the 7200rpm hds are out of stock, you have to buy a 5400rmp hd.

it is boring to upgrade a notebook hd.  "sigh"
