New build won't post - which is faulty?

    New build (got parts today):

    Asus P5Q Pro mobo;Corsair Dominator PC8500 ram;Core Duo E8400 CPU;Asus EAH4850 Video; Cooler Master Real Power Pro 550W PS

WHen I plug in just these core components (in or out of case) and turn it on, I get fans, mobo light and video card led, but no beeps, no video. I think I eliminated the RAM by swapping, but i have no other parts on hand. I hit the chat and it looks like I've done all the troubleshooting that can be done without having parts to swap.

Anyone have any experience to tell what's dead? I suspect cpu, mobo or ps, but I can't tell.

    thanks!

Just in case they didn't ask, is the 4/8 pin connector plugged into the main board? Is the video card plugged in as well?

Yes on both counts. I've also reseated everything. and tried pulling the mobo out of the case and powering up on the bench.

Weird thing is, I can't even make it beep if I unplug RAM, etc.

Re: New build won't post - which is faulty?

New Info: I managed to hook up another speaker to the jumper on the motherboard and I can hear BEEPS!

I get a Long-Short-Short BIOS beep pattern (mem problem) with one memory module (but not the other).

With the good memory stick installed, I get Long-short-short-short (no VGA detected) no matter what configuration I try to put it in.

So, it looks like I have a bad RAM stick and a bad video card.

That seems odd unless something else is going on. Is it possible my power supply is blowing components? The red ERROR light next to the power switch on the back of the power supply hasn't come on yet - according to the manual it's supposed to glow steady when there is a problem.

Try the memory in a different slot.

    Try with no video card

    Try with no memory.

Does it give all the correct beep codes?

It's possible its detecting bad memory on your video card.

Re: New build won't post - which is faulty?

I did 1,2,3 and the beep codes make sense with the "good" and "bad" ram stick in.(I think one of my two ram sticks is bad too, btw. :(   )

with the good stick in, beep codes still say video card, just like with no video card.

I suspect you are right about the video memory.

Can I rule out MB, Power Supply, CPU?

You said you re-seated stuff, but I figured I'd ask if you tried re-seating the CPU in its socket.  I had that problem on my recent build.

System: XFX 780i MoBo, Intel E8400 3.0 GHz CPU, EVGA 8800GT Video Card, 4GB OCZ Reaper PC2 8400 RAM, X-Fi XtremeGamer Sound Card, WD VelociRaptor 300GB HD, Corsair 750wTX PSU, Silverstone TJ10-SW Case, Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS

Re: New build won't post - which is faulty?

Have you gone into BIOS and set that Corsair to 2.1v? The manual's BIOS states: 3.4.14 DRAM Voltage [Auto]

Allows you to set the DRAM voltage. The values range from 1.80V to 3.08V with a 0.02V interval.

So if auto dont pick it up, probably have to set it manually. Unless you havent aready tried, use one stick to boot up, then set it.

Did you try clearing CMOS as well?
