    Wireless Adapter Issues

A few days ago the PCI 802.11g wireless network adapter in my computer died. After re-installing the drivers, switching between the Dynex network program and the WNP software, restarting the computer, disabling and re-enabling the network adapter, testing the other wireless computers in my house, etc, I concluded the only way to fix the problem was to get a new card. The last one I bought in a hurry after a sudden and hasty move. This one I'd like to choose more carefully.

So, to cut to the point, I don't need any pointers or help with fixing the card, I could use some pointers with what to buy to ensure I get a new wireless network adapter that performs well and won't die on me after 6 months. I'm not too worried about the price, as long as its a good card. I've been browsing Newegg for some replacements, and each one that catches my eye has some issues that give me enough pause to reconsider a purchase (suspiciously low price, mixed reviews, unfamiliar brands). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Wireless Adapter Issues

Are you using a separate router? If so, You should try an adapter from the same company. If not, Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear are all pretty good. I would get one that is draft-n for future-proofing.

    Re: Wireless Adapter Issues

Unfortunately, I'm using a 2WIRE Modem/router. I'd have changed it out with something better, but right now I'm not the one paying the internet bill.

I was looking at this Linksys adapter. I'm not put off by the price tag, but the reviews seem to be very mixed. Perhaps the negative reviews were users of 64-bit operating systems, which most wireless adapters do not yet support.

Well said Grump !    Good advice.

TotemoOishi....One thing you probably want to look at also is compatibility with the available slot in your Motherboard.

There are several versions of PCI etc slots.

    Just a thought.

    Re: Wireless Adapter Issues

I think it would be OK. Just follow the installation advice in the reviews. And remember. Some people low-rate a product when they have trouble, claiming high tech knowledge, when it is operator error.
