i have an old old gateway 400vtx. a long time ago the sound mysteriously stopped working and i discovered that it had burnt out. i had no idea why. so i bought a pcmcia sound card and i damaged it and that has also stopped working. so my laptop has no sound whatsoever. on top of it all, i believe the pcmcia slot might be damaged (there were some bent pins in there, i bent them back carefully but my card still doesn't work). instead of putting even more money into this ancient laptop (i'm building my own pc anyway) i was going to buy a cheap lil usb sound card. however, i'm not sure if i will get any sound from the usb device since the integrated motherboard sound is gone. does anyone know if the usb device can deliever sound on its own or does there have to be exsisting sound from the laptop? i know this is an odd question but can anyone help?
here is a link to the usb i was going to buy: http://store.accstation.com/pusbscxxad01.html
the manufacturer's website doesn't say anything on the subject either.
thanks!
