    IDE DVD Drive problem

I'm making a new comp and just finished putting it all together.  It starts up and seems to work just fine, EXCEPT the IDE cd/dvd drives aren't getting any power, as I cannot open their trays to put in my Windows XP CD.  But when I disconnect the IDE cable and start up the comp, they have power and I can open the trays.

Both drivers worked fine in the past.  I've tried using just one but nothing. I've tried different IDE cables with the same result.

Is there a BIOS setting to make them work?

Any ides?  I'm stumped. Tongue Tied

    Re: IDE DVD Drive problem

Check for bent pins on both the drive and motherboard.

Also, you may want to try resetting the CMOS with the battery/jumper.

thats got me stumped too.  Is this a new mobo?

    Re: IDE DVD Drive problem

Let me get this right, the DVD & CD drives will work when the ribbon cable is taken off, but they won't work when you have them hooked up? Wow,that is weird. Are the Jumers set to what they should be? One MA, One Slv? Or both CS? Definitely do Kunz's advice, clear CMOS, but wow.

I'd try to run one first too, see what it does, or do the other, solo, if still nothing, may be the cable, if not pins bents, soemthign amiss. Good o try another cable if possible.

    Peace, Penewah!

    Re: IDE DVD Drive problem

Had another thought come to me, but its a bit of a stretch.  But is the mobo touching the case under the IDE connector?  You may want to try building the computer outside the case and see if you get the same result.

If all this fails to fix it, i would RMA the board.

    Re: IDE DVD Drive problem

I checked all the pins and they look fine.  I tried a 4th IDE cable and I was actually able to get power to the drive and I was able to open the tray and put in the cd, but it still would not recognize the drive: it kept giving me the message "Insert CD and press enter".  After I restarted a couple times I was no longer able to open the tray, it seemed random.

I haven't tried resetting the cmos yet, gonna try that now.  Also gonna try my 650w power supply and 2 other drives to see what happens.  If they don't work I'm pretty sure (like you guys said) it's the mobo =/  Wouldn't be the first time I've had problems with Gigabyte mobo's though.

Thanks for the replies, I'll let you guys know how it goes...

    Re: IDE DVD Drive problem

Well I tried the 650w PSU, I tried another drive, I tried changing the slave/master setting, I tried placing the mobo and everything outside on cardboard but it's still not reading the drive or giving power to it.  I still get the message "Insert CD and press enter".

So it looks like I'm going to have to return the mobo. =/

Thanks again for the help guys.  Hopefully a new mobo will be the solution.
