Q9300 due to smaller core and least electricity user and less heat produced, you could also go with the Q9550 if your budget allows it.

doesthis mean via creative splicing and mounting i can sli my video cards via one pci 2.0 and on normal x16 pci slot or would that be undoable thanks to no driver support becasue if it is thesiable i might shell out for another card

As long as both cards are Identical you can SLI on 2.0 with x16 even x8 or x4 but meh.

My 8600GT is kind of crappy, need to start looking for replacement, some good suggestions here.

    Autumnale:
I thought the 8800GT only had problems with PCI-E version 1.1a or something like that.  It works with 1.0 and 1.1 but not 1.1a, which was what made it so funny.  But yeah, there are BIOS fixes for a bunch of motherboards I think.  I wouldn't know.  But what if people have a super old motherboard from a lame company that no longer updates the BIOS though.  That would be sad.

Some people had problems getting the first 2.0 cards (8800GT's) with version 1.0a.  From what I have gathered, it was mainly VIA chipsets that had the issues.  My DFI LANParty UT NF4 Ultra-D has v1.0a, but an nvidia chipset, and I had no issues at all running my 8800GT.  I researched the topic for weeks before buying the GPU, though!  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8800GT#8800_GT)

Just wondering if anyone has used a XFX PVT96OZDFU GeForce 9600 GSO 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 in a Pci-e x16 board my board is an Asus A8M2N-LA with the latest bios verson.

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

thanks for posting this.  I came to this forum to ask this exact question and I have my answer.

just for the record I am getting a new mainboard with PCIe 2.0 and I want to use my current 8800GTX which is PCIe 1.1.  I would like to upgrade the vid card but prices are still too high on what I want.

again thanks for the info and the sticky!

I am planning on upgrading my graphics card, my motherboard has a PCI-e x16 1.0 slot, but most video cards on the market today at rated for PCI-e x16 2.0? Can I put a 2.0 card in a 1.0 slot? Would it bottleneck the data and if so, how bad? I heard that they will work, but may not. It's sort of a hit and miss thing, that I would have to buy one and see. Not sure if that is true. Also, I heard NVIDIA has more problems working in 1.0 slots than ATI. Again, I have no idea of actually verify if this is true. I am currently considering this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121318 It's an ASUS GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16. Anyone know from experience if it might work?

    Re: PCI-e x16 2.0 graphics card for PCI-e x16 1.0 slot

It should work with no problems, but know you would be more comfortable if someone with your mobo/gpu combo says "yes, it worked for me!"

The only issues I could confirm were some very early VIA chipsets (PCIe v1.0a) having trouble with the earliest PCIe 2.0 cards (specifically, nvidia 8800GT's).  Here is a sticky on this very topic: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/584694.aspx

You are not going to hit any bandwidth bottlenecks with a single card 9600GT and PCIe 1.0a or 1.1.

    good luck!

Doh, I figured this is a topic that has had to have been posted before. If it's any consolation for my noobishness I did try several different search terms in the A+ Hardware Support forum and didn't find an answer to my question. Guess I should've searched the Computer Building & Upgrade >> Video forum instead. Thanks again.

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

I am hoping to avoid making a new thread about this, since it is closely related.

Can we use a PCI Express 2.1 card in a 2.0 slot?

This wikipedia article is not too clear about that.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pci_express#PCI_Express_2.1

And just in case anyone reading this has not heard of the 2.1 cards I will link one from our favorite storefront, Newegg.

(Actually I will link the entire category of them.)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201069653938&name=PCI%20Express%202.1%20x16

I quit. I am not coming back.

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

PCIE 2.1 is backwards compatible with PCIE 2.0 and PCIE 1.0/1.1

Yes its the same speed as PCIE 2.0, it just has some management features that will be implemented in PCIE 3.0.

So it's pretty much a PCIE 3.0 slot without the speed capability.

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

That is if you can get your motherboard manufacture to give you a Bios to fix a compatibility issue with a motherboard that has a 1.0a PCI-E slot.

    Re: YES PCIe 2.0 - 2.1 - 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

So what are the limits between pcie 2.0 2.1 - pcie 16x?  In otherwords, at what point does pcie 16x reach where no matter how significant the card improvement is, pcie 16x can't utilize it any more?

    GmsCool:

YES PCIe 2.0  and 1.1 (16x) are compatible!

2.0 cards will work in 1.1 main boards and visa versa.  (most of the time)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_2.0

Also the 2.1 cards are compatible with both older versions as well.

    Any questions?

    Edit: Post updated for 2.1

    Re: YES PCIe 2.0 - 2.1 - 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

There is no speed difference between 2.0 and 2.1, 2.1 implements some data reporting features that are planned for PCIE 3.0. (This is for future 2.1/3.0 compatibility).
