    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Can i still post here? o well....

I managed to get the Cpu stable at 3.0Ghz with fsb volts at 1.425(red setting). What's the max setting i can put on cpu fsb volts without burning it or damaging it? and i changed some of the other volts too but on green settings tho, except cpu volts at 1.3125.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

I use 1.6V VTT(FSB Voltage) regularly on mine without any issues.

People make a big deal out of voltages over 1.4 but there really isn't any truth to the claims.  It's going to die eventually so why not have some fun with it.

K ill try to keep it under 1.6 since u said it would burn...... Confused  :D, just hope it doesn't die on me soon......i cant afford another $180 or $200(just turned 16....cant even get a job yet....i tried at least...)

Over 1.6V shouldn't hurt, 1.6V is just what I use for 2,180Mhz FSB.  According to some people the older 65NM processors(Your CPU) are more "durable" than the 45NM processor I have.  More durable means more voltage tolerance.

The 71C thermal specification on Intel's website is the "TcMax" or "TcaseMax" value.  Tcase is the temperature on the center of the top of the IHS. The temperature from a program like CoreTemp is TJmax minus the value read from the DTS.  The DTS is located close to the CPU core(under the IHS) and provides a semi accurate value.  The DTS value will almost always be higher than the Tcase value.

If the temperature value provided by CoreTemp is higher  than the TcaseMax value there is very little to worry about.  As the DTS value approaches the TJmax value the CPU will either throttle or shutdown completely.(unless disabled)  Allowing the DTS value to go above the TJmax value is not something I recommend doing on a daily basis.(once or twice for benching won't hurt)

On your CPU the TJmax value is around 100.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Ok now i just wish it wouldnt restart randomly now...... Sad

Yesterday it restarted randomly.....i was just about to turn it off(didnt have anything running) and it restarted.....

    Today.......was playing Cod4 and restarted.....

It was a at 3.0Ghz yesterday and at 3.2Ghz today... i checked the temps and they are fine.... ill put a picture in a while.....and i ran IntelBurnTest for 30-45min and it passed on both, and for Prime95 for 1hr, i did memtest and it passed too. Now on SpeedFan the +12v said its at 6.23 but i checked bios and its at 11.99. I dont think its the PSU since its a Corsair 750Watts.

I was thinking of buying the Cooler Master V8 120mm heatsink before the first restart so wasnt doing much.....

    HELP :D

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Only way to check power supply voltage is with a multimeter.  Software and BIOS don't even get close.

For the 12V around 12.5V is what you want for optimal overclocking.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Well i didnt trust SpeedFan so i got Hardware Sensors Monitor and it said it was at 12.71V so idk if its the PSU still but how do u check it with a multimeter or does it have to be a special one?

If it isnt the PSU that is causing it to reset then what could it be?

  •  07-09-2009, 9:15 PM 544059 in reply to 544055

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

It could simply be an unstable overclock causing restarts.

To check power supply voltage with a multimeter, connect the black lead to one of the middle pins of a 4 pin molex and the red lead to one of the pins on the end.   On power supplies where the wires are colored the yellow wire is the 12V and the red is 5V.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

So even tho it passes the stress test then its still unstable?

Then i guess i aint buying the Cooler master V8 heatsink Crying

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Did you run Blend, Large FFT or Small FFT in Prime95?  Blend is the best one for stability testing.

  •  07-10-2009, 12:36 PM 544283 in reply to 544116

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Large FFT and Small FFT. Ill try Blend.

On hardware Sensors Monitor 4.4 it says Mainboard temps are at 30C when room temp is at 30C but when the room temp is at 60F it is at 42C and it even reached 100C twice? is that the NorthBridge temps or SouthBridge and is that normal?

  •  07-10-2009, 5:16 PM 544448 in reply to 544283

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

If it has gone to 100C my guess is that would be the northbridge temperature.  I recommend getting a fan on the northbridge heatsink as Nvidia chipsets are normally very hot.

Southbridge temperatures are pretty much insignificant.

I recommend you keep testing FSB speeds with a 6X CPU multiplier.  It helps to rule out CPU instability caused by too low of Vcore which allows you to concentrate your efforts on the real problem.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

northbridge has a fan it just went up to 100C out of no where, even tho the room temp is low, and whats with the weird temps(when room is hot it is cold and when room is cold it is hot?!?!?!?!(it never goes over 30C when room is 30C)Is the northbridge the one next to the cpu/ram?

How do i test with a multiplier set to 6? Do i start at 1066FSB with Multiplier at 6?(dont think it boots with those settings) or do i test at 1333FSB and 6X CPU multiplier then switch to 9 or 7...8...then 9?

Set your FSB to 1333 if you are trying to achieve 3GHz using a 9 time multiplier then decrease the multiplier to 6X and run Prime95 Blend for a few minutes.  If it doesn't crash try out some games or whatever for a while using the 6 time multiplier and 1333FSB.  If it is still fine increase the multiplier back to 9 and do the same test as before.  If it crashes or fails the test it more than likely needs higher Vcore.  If it crashes or fails at a 6 time multiplier the Vcore is more than likely high enough and the problem exists with the northbridge or RAM.(VTT, PLL, NB voltage or RAM settings)

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

ok i tried everything and now it still resets...... it passes the test with 6X multiplier but at 9X it restarts at 1hr in test. Now i put the Vcore up to 1.325 and it last less than an hr.....set the vcore to 1.35 and resets in less than 30mins and anything higher is less than 30mins. I tested the volts on the PSU and they are over 12v and 5v so dont think its the PSU.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Frustrated it was the dam PSU........i checked and the 12v was at 12.12 and the 5v at 5.08  -.-

and when i put the Vcore higher it lasted less time......thought corsair was good quality.........plus 750watts........Angry

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Higher voltage causing less stability could be cooling related.

Watch RealTemp while you run Prime95 and keep an eye on the temperature.

What did you use to check the power supply voltage?

12.12V and 5.08V are both fine.  It is best to check power supply voltage during load.  Run a program like Furmark and run Prime95 Blend at the same time then check the voltage.

I would run OCCT to test your overclock. It will give you a graph of all your temps and voltages and save them to log files for you to review.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Voltage readings from software are more or less useless.

On my DFI board software would read 12.39-12.40.  After changing the motherboard to a Gigabyte software reads 12.10-12.20.  The only change was the motherboard.  My multimeter has kept true to its reading of 12.45V no matter which motherboard is used.

    been busy lately....

well if i run prime95 the temperature never goes over 55C and i used a multimeter and checked on the molex connector.

     What PSU do u use?
