NathanM:See my avatar for some awesome Progressive Metal / Melodic Death Metal (Into Eternity). But really, I like so much music in the metal category I couldn't possibly list all my favorites. You could check out my last.fm page if interested: http://www.last.fm/user/NathanM/
Scattering Of Ashes was quite the awesome indeed. It's usually on rotation on my Zen as bus riding music.
I'm glad to see a metal thread on here, and if anyone is interested, i will post my band's space with music for you all to comment on.

I listen on and off to metal, depending on my mood. Big Static-X fan, but I also like Fear Factory, DragonForce, Pantera,
Godsmack, Disturbed, 40 Below Summer, Mushroomhead, Primer55, Avenged Sevenfold, Kittie, Black Sabbath, Skrape, Slipknot, Staind, Taproot, and Tool. Yeah, they're not all really metal, but I'll listen to most anything rock.

I'm old school. I started listening when WASP, Venom Slayer and Metallica were where it was at.
I have quite a nice collection of vinyl from back in the day and saw lots of GREAT shows.
My faves from back then were:
Metallica
Armored Saint
Slayer
Venom
WASP
Megadeth
KISS
Sabbath
Now, my tastes have broadened. I can't even listen to what they call metal these days. I don't like the sound. Digital audio has made it a lot easier to make a record but its drained the soul from rock and roll. Records just don't sound the way they used to.

Scarecrow:There are subgenres of metal I hate, and some subgenres of metal I love. in the end thrash metal is the best. but to really understand the metal I lik here are a few of the best metal bands out there: -Metallica -Testament -Overkill -Megadeth -Flotsam and Jetsam -Judas Priest -Motorhead -Dio -Black Sabbath -Ozzy -Biohazard -Iron Maiden Basically 80s and early 90s metal. Those were the golden metal years. Now it's a lot of horrible singing with tiring and repeatitive drumming.
you forgot White/Rob Zombie Disturbed Korn Pantera TOOL slipnot system of a down Gwar! (sorry I didn't read through the whole thing yet, you all rock!)

Dry Kill Logic - one of the best metal bands ive heard in a while, and no one here has mentioned them if im not mistaken and of course all of the classics already listed. My first album (vinyl by the way) was Paranoid i bought at a garage sale for a dollar when i was like 7 or 8.

Decent enough question, but I'm in the faction that there's just too many good bands out there to limit oneself to a few and listen over and over. If it rocks it's good for me. Louder the better. As long as no one is putting on Spears or some dippy arse bubblegum chick or love guy group, I'm good to go.
I do like some of the jam some of the gaming companies put on there tracks. The session break music on Doom III and Painkiller is pretty kickin.
But in terms of metal, lets just say this, I got a 500 WD Essential just brimming with all the music I need, so glad I DL'd it before the "packet" police started playing Big brother for the music co's. Them bad rich Mofos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Penewah!
