What are you using for a graphics card and what driver is xorg.conf configured to use?
 

Meh, I've got a slackware box at home and at work (Servers) , a Knoppix Box at home (MythTV), as well as 2 OpenBSD boxes at home (firewall/nat, laptop) ....

I don't have any problems with any of them.

 

I have had Ubuntu installed on my tower both as the only OS and as a dual boot with XP.  I prefer it over openSUSE.  My ultimate goal is clustering a group of diskless Linux clients together to run Seti@Home.

Dual boot XP MCE & Fedora core 6 on my second machine.   If they had better gaming support i would run it for everything.

Generally speaking, anything under the 7000 nVidia will probably work on most motherboards with linux. The low end 4000m and 5000 series work well. For the higher end nvidia and ATI, one is probably safer with one of the commercial distros with the proprietary drivers.

I have had attempted install of Ubuntu that bulks on a SATA and a high end nVidia card combo.  On the other hand a Disto like SuSE Pro $$$$ ( about $80 ) went right on.

But after many installs, I can only say, ya won't know till ya try.

PClinux os is what I use.

real easy transition from xp

they are just about to put out the 2007 version but are currently doing test releases for it to debug.

at this time you can only download the test release which will not be upgradable but will give you a good idea of the OS.

The low end nvidia work well.

I have tried a 4000 and a 5200.  the 7800 won't work with any Ubuntu based distros I have tried or SuSE freebies on my test box.  Don't know if this is universal.  We tested the Ubuntu Family and SuSE free on SATA controllers, but all with low end video or integrated video.

I don't the similar numbers in PCIe..if there are any 

I upgraded my wifes computer a couple of years ago with the cheapest stuff I could find, Chaintech Mobo, Sempron2400, and the cheapest 512MB memory stick I could find. When the old origional hard drive died year I installed Ubuntu Dapper on the new one and it works great! Everything worked right away. There aren't many things plugged into it as she just uses it for web browsing and e mail and some digital photo editing but I am really impressed on how well this thing works. I have less than 200 dollars invested in this thing but it does everything she needs it to do. I had no hardware or driver issues at all, the ethernet worked, the onboard Via graphics worked, USB-everything. I'm thinking of upgrading it to Feisty later this month when the final version comes out. If they had a program like Turbo Tax or Adobe Premiere for video I would probably scrap windows. Bottom line- we have a computer that does just about everything we need for about the price of retail XP Home. The way Linux keeps improving and updating I will probably be using it for everything in a couple of years.

I use Suse Linux 10.0 with a Windows XP Virtual Machine to run iTunes.

Generally, the installer will ask you during the install about installing the boot loader, but keep in mind the partitions  are numbered differently

The first four numbers are reserved for the possible 4 primary partitions e.g. hda1,2,3,4 for PATA or sda 1 to 4 for SATA

the first logical partition is  normally called hda5 ( or sda5 ).

If you have 1 primary and 2 logical in the exteneded, it would be hda1, 5 and 6. Some call the extended 2.

Some Distros have rules about how they will install on an active NTFS partition, and many MS products will not boot if "C", as hda1 is 

is a non MS partition.  So a rule of thoumb is to put MS on "C".  I go one step further and make a  FAT32 share partiton as "C"

as MS after 9X does not require a Primary partition.  Make "D"  MS, and ( MS "E" ) hda ( or sda ) 6 as Linux.

If you have 3 primary partitions, then of course it is hda 1,2,3 etc. 

 

 

I'm running SimplyMEPIS 6.0 on my Desktop and dual booting Mepis with XP on my Dell D610 laptop.  The laptop is my employers so I have to keep XP on there for work but Mepis worked great on it.  Even the wifi worked right out of the box. 

I do have the CDs downloaded for SimplyMEPIS 6.5 downloaded.  I'm going to install on my desktop first (hopefully this weekend).
 

Slackware is cool, but I like Gentoo for the init and Portage.  All the games I actually care about are on the Unreal Engine, pretty much, so I've not had a problem there ^_^

In reference to games and high-end Nvidia support on Linux:

 

I currently have the following installed under Slackware that I play regularly -

Neverwinter Nights (All addon packs, native Linux client)

DOOM 3 (all addon packs, native Linux Client)

Unreal Tournament 2004 (****load of maps, native Linux client)

Starcraft (Via Wine)

Quake 4 (Runs awesome, Native Linux Client)

Diablo 2 (All addons, Via Wine, an old fav of mine)

and a cool new native Linux 3D space shooter called Astromenace.

 

When I get the urge to play Half-life 2, F.E.A.R, or Ghost Recon (Advanced Warfighter), I dual-boot into XP, get my fix, and get out.   

 

I am running an Athlon 64 X2 4600+, 2GB Ram, Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, BFG Geforce 7950 GT OC 512MB PCIX (Soon to be 2 in SLI), Adaptec AHA-3960 SCSI, 8 Seagate Cheetah/Barracuda Ultra-320 SCSI drives (4 in a hot-swap cage), 2 Maxtor SATA drives, NZXT Trinity Case, and a Turtle Beach Catalina 7.1 sound card.

 

Absolutely no problems getting the Nvidia drivers to work with the 7950.  Awesome framerates in all 3D apps. Lovin' Linux Gamin'!!!

wow, that's impressive... never saw anyone get diablo 2 working. Is it the mac version, or something?

Nope, it's the regular PC version, with the LOD expansion pack.  There are several links on the 'net that give instructions to make it work.  I'll see if I can dig up the one I used. 

Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS on my box!

Well, I got SimplyMepis 6.5 64bit installed.  I like it.  The thing about Mepis is . . . it just works.  I've run Linux for the last 6 years as my primary OS and for the last year as my only OS.  I've tried several distros (Fedora, Vector, OpenSUSE, Mandrive, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, DSL, Lorma, RedHat, Debian).  I like Debian based distros because of apt-get (resolves dependencies nicely) and of the Debian based distros I prefer Mepis.  Kubuntu is nice.  I don't like Ubuntu (but I don't like Gnome).  Pure Debian is nice if you install KDE but it's a lot more work than Kubuntu or Mepis.  At my age (51) I'm at a point where I just like to install something and have it work and that's what Mepis is all about.  Give it a try if you haven't already. 

Another word or two of advise to anyone looking to try Linux . . . when you purchase your hardware, purchase from manufacturers that offer Linux driver support.  ATI and Nvidia have the best support when it comes to video.  I think Nvidia has the best driver support.  Video is the most common problem I see new users complain about when trying Linux.  They install some distro, end up with a blank screen or kicked back to the command line interface, and walk away with a bad taste.

If you game, consider a dual boot.  Most game manufacturers just don't support Linux. It's not that hard to setup.  If you have the expertise to install windows you can install Linux in a dual boot.  If you need help, join one of the many Linux forums.  Look around until you find one that fits your style and look for one that's friendly to new Linux converts.

 The thing about Linux is stability and security.  I've never crashed Linux in the 6 years I've used it.  I've crashed the window manager a time or two (usually due to something dumb I did when I was just learning) but never the kernel.  LoL!  With Linux you don't have to worry about spyware or viruses.
 

Been using Edgy Eft since it was released, upgraded to Feisty 2 days ago, hosed the system, installed from CD and have been a very happy bunny ever since. Samba is a breeze, compiz just works, very nice environment.
