    Another question for Root......

In 2 weeks or so I will be putting together my very first build (FINALLY!)

What order should I install everything to have a quick, painless and hopefully be free of the BSOD.

Is there a guide somewhere that is step by step from start to finish?

    EVGA 680i SE mobo

    2gb crucial 800mhz ram

    2 EVGA 8800 GT gpu

    E6850 cpu

    WD Raptor hdd

    Antec 900 Case

    Rosewill 750w psu

    Thanks!

First instal everything except just use one ram, and one video card.

    What OS?

Then boot........Immediately enter the BIOS to make sure the voltages for your ram and cpu are set correctly, set you CAS Latencies for the RAM as specified for them, set the video to load PCIe first. (just incase they differ from what your components call for) Then save and exit.

Then boot into Memtest86/ freeware    Read-me and check to make sure the settings work with your main board.

Then you can probably install your OS with out any problems.

Update windows, your video card rivers, main board drivers, and Direct-X 9c/ Vista compatible.

Then run Prime95 ver 25.4 and see if it stable.

Then add your other stick of ram, and Video card, set Video cards to SLI (if intended) and retest both tests.

Then you can run 3Dmark06/ freeware and post your scores to make us all jelous of how fast your very stable new system runs.

    Re: Have a Question?

Thank you, that's what I was looking for!

Oh and I will either get Vista Home Premium or Ultimate...but swinging toward Home Premium as I don't see myself needing Ultimate.

And I've never seen Prime95 or any benchmark test run (complete first time build nOob here)..is there anything I should lookout for?

    Re: Have a Question?

I haven't ignored ya gulch, just busy week Big Smile

I'm going to try and whip something together in the next couple of days, going through the generic motions. Step 1, and the most important thing I can tell you, is to read your mobo manual front to back. My other tidbit (without going into a full article's worth of advice) is to install your drives/optical drives first. Then your PSU and THEN your mobo (typically if you don't do it in that order you will get frustrated... although there are those few exceptions, just look at your case and try to visualize the easiest way to physically install your parts).

I'll go over physical installation and the popular testing programs out there.

    Re: Have a Question?

Well I got it all together last night, and everything couldn't have gone smoother!

Special thanks to Root and GmsCool for the tips!!

I don't have internet on it yet unfortunately.

What does the Vista score mean?

Mine is 5.6......everything except for my CPU got a 5.9 rating, I have a hard time believing that the E6850 got a 5.6

Other than that, I loaded Crysis and it said that the optimal settings for the game was "very high"....so I played it and there was absolutely no hiccups at all, very smooth framerates.

Then I loaded up COD4 and I think I have a new favorite game, the gameplay is spectacular!

I will post a benchmark score when I can.

    Another Question For Root

I happen to have my hands on a intel confidental chip. it is a 2.5ghz, 6mb cache, and 1333MhZ FSB. i want to use it obviously, but it is one of the new core 2 or quads with the 45nm transistors. i am just wondering if you can link me of let me know a list of high end boards that support 45nm technology,i.e. 780i 680i asus striker etc etc... i could do it but i dont feel like digging around for a day.. thanks alot. Re: Another Question For Root

    Here's a list from NewEgg:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280+107172451+1071733949&Configurator=&Subcategory=280&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=

I'm recommending the 780i's over the 680i's mainly becuase of their Yorkfield support...Otherwise, if your short on cash and still want SLi, you should go ahead and get a 680i motherboard, here are some of the best ones:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280%20107171927%201071725373&bop=And&CompareItemList=N82E16813188013%2CN82E16813131074%2CN82E16813131073%2CN82E16813127020%2CN82E16813188012

The major issue with Penryn is that it's not always compatible with older high-end motherboards such as the 680i...There are BIOS fixes out which supposedly fix the compatibility issues between the two, but NVIDIA has already confirmed that the NVIDA 680i motherboards and the LT versions will only be compatible with and up to Penryn Wolfdale CPUs...But there still are BIOS updates which supposedly fix the compatibility issues between the 680i motherboards and the Penryn Yorkfields...But these seem to be rumors, since NVIDIA has already announced that the hardware, not the software or firmware, is the issue between older 680i motherboards and Intel's Penryn Yorkfields...

So, if you get a 680i motherboard, you'll only be able to get Penryn Wolfdale CPUs, Yorkfields will be incompatible...You'll have to get 780i's for Yorkfield CPUs...

And just to clarify, Wolfdale CPU's are Dual Core, while Yorkfield CPU's are Quad Core, and both run at 1333Mhz FSB...

Here's NVIDIA's Motherboard for Intel chart:

    http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/35382/LC_nForce_INTEL_Dec07_Screen.pdf
