:) Thank you everyone.  Sorry I haven't been here in a while.  For some reason, a few months back, this topic fell out of my discussions (alert: moderator).  But thanks for the support and the nice words on the subject.  If there's anything I can help any of you with, just let me know.  Thank you. :)

Re: TL Explains: Northbridge/Southbridge Mumbo Jum

Welcome back Woohoo and thank you for sharing your insight.  Well, as you do seem to be incredibally knowledgable, there is one quetion I'd like to ask about overclocking:

My P5E3 Deluxe will let me attempt to overclock my Q6600 FSB to 1600~1700MHz, but not how I thought it would.  If I set the DRAM Frequency to 1600MHz in the BIOS, then Vista locks up and won't boot (though the POST is successul).  However, if I set the frequency to 800~1000MHz, Vista will load fine and utilities in the OS tell me that the FSB is 1600~1700MHz... I'm thoroughly confused (mainly because this is my first delve into overclocking).  I updated from the first BIOS revesion last night and haven't had a chance to mess with it since.

     Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks,

    Bob Beer

Re: TL Explains: Northbridge/Southbridge Mumbo Jum

Here's a new thought. I was just wondering a little about Northbridge temps. I have nice ol' Zalman on the CPU and it's keeping everything down in the mid forties in mid summer. So, I'm happy with that.

However, the northbridge is running around 52, is that ok? It doesn't seem to be affecting performance any.

    Thoughts?

Sorry for no response - this thread's been long gone from my 'My Discussions' no matter how many times I try to add it back (Attn: Moderators - HELP!!)

I'm not sure what the issue here is - maybe it's a peculiarity with the specific board, or perhaps it's not MHz it's letting you set to, but 1/2 MHz (i.e. DDR2 800 runs at 400MHz - perhaps that's what it's doing, maybe it's labelled incorrectly).

That's about all I can think of.  Hope this can help someone, if not you, as it's been a while since you posted this. :S  Sorry!!

Re: TL Explains: Northbridge/Southbridge Mumbo Jum

Northbridges are mightily heat-resistant anymore - they've been steadily getting hotter as computing progresses - back in 2003, 55C would have been a problem.  It moved to about 60C in 2005-2006.  I'd estimate (if it's a newer board) that you would be safe running a sub-65C Northbridge.  And remember that overclocking is practically the only way to reach these temperatures.  Other ways would include bad case airflow (I did an article on this, as well), or perhaps bad thermal application of heatsink.

    Hope this helps! :)

Re: TL Explains: Northbridge/Southbridge Mumbo Jum

Thanks for the response. I am running a brand new Gigabyte Board that I bought for it's high endedness. So I'm not going to fret the Northbridge temp. I set Speedfan back so it doesn't make the little fire emblem until the NB reaches 60. I don't thiink it has actually ever crested 60, even in dead summer.

Also, admittabley I have case airflow issues. I have a very slimline HTPC. I replaced the NB heatsink with a Zalman, and run a low profile Zalman HSF on the CPU to compensate. In the summer it does heat up a little bit. I have two 60mm fans that run exhaust (but only need to use one), but you can feel the warm coming out. Not a big prob though. The CPU vents out the top of the case and never goes over 45, and it is currently OC'd to 3.75 GHz.

Thanks for the input...LONG LIVE "TL Explains:" Eeehaa
