Re: EggXpert Folding@Home Team
Sidicas:If you RMA to Antec, they will replace your PSU and you won't have to pay return shipping.. If it's an old model they don't have in stock anymore, then you'll get a free upgrade.. I RMA'd a 350 SmartPower Antec because the temp controlled fan stopped spinning and I got back a 500 Watt True Power II with a little note saying that the SmartPower series was no longer being manufactured and they hoped I would accept a True Power as a replacement..
I've come across the same thing with xfx, back in the day i had a client with a 7900gtx that failed and xfx replaced it with the 8800gtx because the 7900gtx was so short lived and they no longer had it.

They changed the ppd calculating methods as far as i know, its more based off of how fast you get them done and the WU not just the WU any more.

Even better... You could get a 300 series... They'll be out by December.
Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAIDI never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.

You don't have anything to worry about.. I've been sick all week so I turned off my GPU folder (averaging about 4500PPD in Linux) and booted it into Vista to play some Call of Duty and Ghostbuters for most of the day for the past few days.. I also was working on a Linux kill script for my APC UPS.. So that it would shut down my GPU and SMP folders when it switched over to battery backup.. Without folding@home, with AMD PowerNow! enabled my little HTPC burns about 70 watts (45 minutes of battery power). With folding@home SMP and GPU running at 100% usage, I burn a little over 210 watts which is only 15 minutes of battery power.. It goes up even farther to 300 watts with 19" CRT monitor on. Anyway, instead of sending a SIGINT (Ctrl+C), my kill script was sending a SIGTERM.. Unfortunately the SIGTERM killed off the folding@home clients so fast that if it was in the middle of writing a workunit, it corrupted the workunit and had to start over.. I didn't realize it at first, but pkill sends SIGTERM by default and I had to manually use the "-2" kill level.. Just a tip to anybody running Linux who want to close down their folders that are running entirely in the background as a service (ie: nohups), just use pkill -2 on the main executable, not the worker threads and it will die gracefully within a few seconds.
Oh, you want to know something really cute? Vista detects the UPS hooked up to my HTPC and then treats my HTPC like a battery powered laptop.. So you handle the power management just like a laptop. I thought that's pretty cool. If you ever want to get a UPS to protect your systems that are running 24/7 so they can keep going even when the power is out.. Definitely go with APC, their UPS systems are absolutely amazing and darn fun to play with. Even the 80 dolalr models let you use the PowerChute software (running great in 64-bit Vista here) to fine tune the exact voltages of when the UPS switches over to battery backup.. Really cool stuff.

I just checked where I'm at in the Team Stats. I'm in 48th place. Right behind jsv35. About 3800 points behind him. Guess that's not to bad.

Re: EggXpert Folding@Home Team
Thanks, I hit the million point mark about a week ago but I was not going to make a big deal about it. When I looked last night, Kardon was between 8000-9000 points from the 2 million point mark. I was going to check after work and see if he had made it yet. Thanks for posting the congratulations.
Congrats to Kardon!!!

Kardon had you look at my other post about the new folding setup? If you have an i7 might as well take the advantage boost up your cpu score.

Wow that sounds like a lot of work when I have easy stuff I still need to do like get a dummy plug for my gtx295 to fold on both cores. Can I setup the -bigadv without a vm setup? Geuss I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the heads up

Re: EggXpert Folding@Home Team
Actually VM is required because VM smp folding is based on linux based which provided more points, most people who fold with their i7 use smp7 instead of 8, so the graphics card ppd won't drop. Just give you some idea how much bonus points actually rewarded http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=11314.

Re: EggXpert Folding@Home Team
Questions!!!
Okay, I read everything on the frist page, but I would like to know how using multiple computers can help. I understand the molecular biology or biochemistry of DNA, protein and protein foldeing, but what I don't get is where and in what way distributing simulation operations to multiple computers can be of any help. So, more simulations can be done simultaneously? Is that the whole point of it? And by simulating they are trying to find matches between simulated results and protein conformations seen in known desease states?
Second, hm... my coomputer is mostly sleeping caz I want to save power. This project will reuire my computer to be on all the time? Of course, it's my computer and I will be able to turn it of when I want to, but I mean if my computer's sleeping, it won't be contributing in sleep right?

Re: EggXpert Folding@Home Team
products:in what way distributing simulation operations to multiple computers can be of any help. So, more simulations can be done simultaneously? Yup. They're studying multiple proteins simultaneously.. products:Is that the whole point of it?
Protein simulation products: And by simulating they are trying to find matches between simulated results and protein conformations seen in known desease states?
Not exactly.. It's not possible to "see" some proteins fold since they can happen faster than a blink of an eye.. And even if you did "see" them in a microscope, you still have absolutely no idea what causes it to "fold".. So you'd have no idea what causes it to "misfold".. The problem of protein folding needs to be approached from two directions.. You have the people in the lab who can see proteins fold and misfold without much understanding at the atomic level of what's going on.. And then you have computers which are running atomic level simulations of protein folding that need to be connected to the bigger picture.. So the problems that they're having is - No matter how much you study something under a microscope, you can't really determine what's going on at the atomic level.. And just because you see something does not mean you have any idea why it happens or why it doesn't happen..
- The amount of computation required to simulate everything at the atomic level is astronomical. You can't simulate every atom in somebody's entire brain at the atomic level to determine why they get alzheimer's, it would take computers thousands and thousands of years.. There's just too much computation...
So certainly Folding@home alone is not the answer.. And certainly scientists in a lab alone is not the anwer.. The problems of protein folding have traditionally been attacked from the right with scientists in a lab poking and prodding.. But no matter how much they look at it and how much they prod at it, they can't 100% determine why proteins fold or misfold because they can't see what's really going on behind the scene.. Even worse, these scientists can get millions and millions and millions of your dollars and no matter what they do, they may never find the solution using this method alone..
Folding@home starts the attack on the problem from the left.. Instead of starting at the bigger picture and doing guess&check to figure out why it's broken, you start at the absolute smallest level (subatomic) and then build your way up to larger and larger scales. Despite folding@home and all the scientist's work, there's still this grey no-man's-land in the middle where folding@home doesn't reach and the scientists in the lab can't reach.. That's where the solution to the problem is.. However, with each passing day, folding@home clears up more of the grey area on the left and advancing technology in high end labs clear up the grey area on the right.. With the idea of eventually meeting in the middle somewhere where we can absolutely solve any protein folding problems no matter how big or small they are which with it comes the cures to hundreds of diseases..
Folding@home continually publishes papers and their findings.. Those papers combined with papers from scientific findings in the lab is where real break throughs in cures for these diseases happen..
products: Second, hm... my coomputer is mostly sleeping caz I want to save power. This project will reuire my computer to be on all the time?
Yes. products: Of course, it's my computer and I will be able to turn it of when I want to, but I mean if my computer's sleeping, it won't be contributing in sleep right?
Right. You can't do math problems while you're sleeping and neither can your computer.
Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAIDI never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.
