    COMPUTER TREE 2: Spring 2008

Well I have to be politically correct don't I? *grin*

We FINALLY have the OK for this project. Yay! Special thanks to the EggXpert staff for letting us use their site for this project as well as to all the people who threw in their support.

This particular post is not only about the details of the project but it's also a contract, so please keep that in mind.

    Last modified: 12/8/2007 @ 5:39PM CST

    Here are the details

    1. Whole (working) computers will be accepted. We will NOT be doing parts this time around due to the time frame we have to work with. The only exception to this rule is in #4. Laptops is a plus (cheaper to ship).
    2. You must ship them to a Trusted User (TU) for cleaning and reconfiguring (i.e. the hard drive will be wiped clean). This is both to protect yourself as well as the donatee. We will NOT be shipping directly from you to the donatee.
    3. We are accepting LEGAL software disks like a Window's XP/Office/etc.
    4. If you have a tower but no Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor, post it up and let us know. Almost completed computers are accepted, provided we can get the other parts.
    5. Currently we are not accepting money donations, so you will have to pay for your own shipping. Since this is a major downer, I have access to 500$ that can be spent towards shipping. This small fund was not made or contributed by EggXpert or Newegg. If you can pay for your own shipping, please do. This 500$ will be used to help not only donater's but also the TU's who will be shipping the machines (the final product) to the donatee. Again, we are NOT accepting money donations.

    Have a computer/software to donate?

Read the legal disclaimer at the end of this post. Reply to this thread with "I accept the terms" (Your post will be ignored until you say this) after you read the rest of this section. Then give us (in this thread) a detailed list of the computer/software that you are willing to donate and whether you can pay for your own shipping or not. Due to limited amount of funds, we will have to be picky on the machines that get the free shipping. Also, if it is a tower only, please specify if you need a Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse. Myself or IamHydrogen will PM (Personal Message) you with more details.

Note that you will have to give (through PM) your physical shipping address to us (root or IamHydrogen), in the rare/unlikely event that we have to give back your machine. PO Box's aren't accepted. Your personal information will not be shared with anyone except to the TU who will be handling your donation. Posting in this thread means you accept this fact and that you will not share the physical address of the TU to anyone unless stated otherwise by the TU.

Have someone in mind that could use a hand-me-down donated computer?

Read the legal disclaimer at the end of this post. Then reply in here with "I accept the terms" (we will not accept your PM until you do) after you read the rest of this section. Then PM myself or IamHydrogen with who you have in mind and why you think they deserve one. We can not gaurantee that your person will be picked. Your nomination will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees (BOT) which is a group of community members and, taking into consideration of our inventory, we will vote.

Note that you will have to give (through PM) your physically shipping address to us (root or IamHydrogen) as well as your nomination's physical address (PO Box's are not accepted). Your personal information will not be shared with anyone except to the TU who will be handling your donation. Posting in this thread means you accept this fact and that you will not share the physical address of the TU to anyone. Please keep in mind that we WILL be sharing your nomination's story to the community, so they (said community) know who they helped.

Want to help some more, or don't have a machine/nomination?

Right now my biggest concern is marketing. We need to get the word out to everyone in the community and as quickly as possible. The only way I know how to do that is through the Signatures. So if you have Photoshop skills, or GIMP, design some Signatures for us! We can link the Sigs to this thread. For now, update your signature with this (copy and paste it):

    Output:

Thanks DTMAce for the design and hosting!

    My projected Timeline

Week 1 (12/9-12/15): Get an inventory list. Gather all nominations. Get a feel for what we can do/afford. By end of week get the donations shipped to the TU's and nomination period closes.

Week 2 (12/16-12/22): Beginning of week BOT start to vote on nominations. Mid week TU's receive machines. End of week BOT finishes voting and TU's ship out.

I realize we won't be able to get many machines out this time around but next year we will have plenty of time to do this properly!

    Final Thoughts

I, root, hold the right to change this post but I must inform everyone who replied to this thread after. If any Uber/Mod/Admin wishes to modify this post, please get my consent first (or at least notify me).

Questions, Comments or Complaints, feel free to PM myself or IamHydrogen. Please be patient if we don't PM you back right away.

Re: COMPUTER TREE: December Holiday 2007

I will see if I can whip up some sigs for you guys.  I have made hundreds for other sites, animated and non animated.  Just let me know with a message what you want on them...

I refurbish systems all the time.  I have several used computers that I do not know what to do with. 3 Dells, and a few others.  All have already been wiped and reloaded, so it that will help cut down time, great.  Most are of the PIII generation, running Win 2k, or 98.  I can also throw ubuntu on them, doesn't matter to me.

    Let me know...

How about small items to complete an "almost ready to go out the door" system?

Maybe that can be done by hooking you up with the right TU. (Edit - duh, you're probably a TU.  Anyway, seems simple enough though...)

    Thanks DTMAce Yes

I think we need to stick with a windows os. We all agreed that these "all" have to be legit as well. 98se and 2000 are perfect. If its a machine that came w/oem XP thats super as well.

Re: COMPUTER TREE: December Holiday 2007

How is this for a graphic?  Just need to write the code for it to work here properly.  BTW do you have a FAQ page on how the coding works on this forum?  I have found a few differences, would help me greatly, thanks.

BTW.  You have permission to use my host (that address) for this and any other graphics I may make down the road.  I don't mind.

Edit:  I can make these more fancy, colorful, etc.  Just don't know what you all want on them, or if you have graphics you want, etc.  Just let me know, it would be easy to dress it up more..

Great work guys. Marketing blitz already in full swing! Hydrogen had a great idea, we are going to try and get an email letter out to everyone in EggXpert on this. We'll see if we can get it approved.

I have an HP tower, but the Hard Drive is going bad; other than that, it works ok. I also have a Gateway 17" CRT monitor, that I lost the power plug to - but it works. I have a new PC and a new monitor. I am not certain I can get these sent off in time, but I am willing to try. I just need an address. I also have some speakers, a keyboard, and a mouse. Let me know vital info. Might be best to e-mail me : *** - better chance of me getting it in a timely fashion.

    Thanks!

For your own safety, please do NOT post up your email address in here and do NOT accept any emails from anyone who claims they are from EggXpert (or me for that matter). We will ONLY communicate through EggXpert's PM or CuteChat.

@Rebel56, so that is 2 computers or just 1 that you are putting up for the cause? We can hook you up with a TU after you post up more details.

EDIT: Time line is in first post. This week we are getting our inventory and shipping it out to TU's toward the end of the week (or ASAP).

I am willing to act as a TU but currently I ahve not participated in Eggxpert forums.  Second, I have access to the University of Iowa Surplus computer store where numerous PIII machines can be purchased for $20 per tower or less.  Lastly, has anyone looked hard at www.cristina.org for a template.  This site is a little more grass roots which is refreshing but their experience would probably be insightful in this endeavor.

I accept the terms.....Ok, so I went through all of my inventory in my garage just now, and this is what I have that I can give up. I need to see what all they need to run properly again, mostly Hard drives and some PSU's (which I may already have). Here is the list. Note - All Monitors work.

    3 - SONY G220 17" CRT Monitors

    3 - IBM 6342-B3U Towers

    2 - IBM 6794-N3U Towers

    2 - Compaq Presario 5000 Towers

    1 - DELL Optiplex GX150 Tower

Please let me know if this is acceptable. Trying to figure out what shipping would be on all of this!

    Great work!

We are working on finding a home for all of these donations. Let me know what the price comes out to and how much you are willing to pay.

If there is a sudden influx of machines, and not enough money to ship them, we might have to pick the best out of the bunch.

Re: COMPUTER TREE: December Holiday 2007

Hey Root.  Oh I may not have said it before but I agree to the terms as well.  Stick out tongue

I know I stated previously that I have a few PC's laying around that could be donated, but I think I will hold and see how the influx here goes.  I wouldn't mind being a TU for this area, if you need one for say Michigan..

Reasons are mostly cause I have only a few, not much cash to spare to ship and I live in the middle of nowhere, and they are lower end PII/IIIs.  Good machines, (3 Dells) and they are already configured and have been wiped and loaded as I got them in.

Dell Demension XPS T550  (PIII 550 256MB 10GB CD-Rom, LAN Modem Sound Video and Dell boxed software complete with Office 2000, etc. Yes that means legal copy of Office) Win2k Keyboard/Mouse

Dell Demension XPS R450  (PII 450 256MB 10GB? CD-Rom Floppy Zip100 LAN Modem Sound Video No software) Win2k

    Dell Optiplex GX1 (PIII 500 128MB 8GB? CD-Rom Floppy Zip100 LAN Modem Sound Video No Software) Win98SE

I have a few monitors, 15" & 17".  I also have keyboards and mice that could be bundled with them.  Most of the software loaded along with the Windows, is Works 8 and a lot of free stuff like AVG, FF, Picasa, Adobe 8, Service Packs, IE updates, etc.

So if you feel you don't have enough PC's later on you can add these to the list as ready to go.  My thing is having boxes and packing material.  I really don't have big enough boxes handy, so keep that in mind.

I'm by far a hardware guru and I'm already getting hammered with Life. Could someone volunteer to list the donations so far and rank them? I need to know which is the better ones out of the bunch. Please minimize the chatter. First person to volunteer takes the position. If you'd like to help that person, PM them. I need a running list (as new ones come in). Work on the list outside of this thread, please. And PM me the list when you have it (as well as an updated one as more people give out donations).
