Re: Best paid hosting site?
I'm looking to change hosts, my current service level is just unacceptable. The box i'm on is trashed and customer service is for ***. I'm looking around, and hostmonster.com seems to be the best price atm, 300gb space and 3000gb transfer for 4.95/mo with free domain name long as your with them. They use some odd sort of cpanel off-shoot, but i can live iwth that, i don't need much in features, just space, bandwidth, and ssh. i just talked to their sales department on the pohne at 9:30 at night and someone live picked up right away after one prompt. I'm gonna give them a shot, if their speeds are good, i'll stick with them, they have the best bang for buck atm, and i don't use 90% of what i have currently, and i signed up 5 years ago, so what was provided then and what is available now is MUCH different. Edit: I just got my package, at dot5hosting.com 24 months with a domain for $112.86. I was gonna select them anywyas, but i got to the bottom of the sign-up thing, and it said promo code, so i figured what the hell, googled dot5hosting promo code, and found one that gave me 5% off. Neat deal i though. they're 300gb space, 3000gb bandwidth, only a few add-on domains, but that' sok for me. No ssh, included in the default plan, which kinda sucks, but hey, it happens. hostmonster.com had it, but the offer somehow expired while i was in the shower for the 4.95$ thing, so... i bagged them, they went up to 5.95, so i shopped til i found dot5hosting. Good luck all in your experiences.

I TAKE IT BACK!!! I TAKE IT ALL BACK!!! DOT5HOSTING.COM SUCKS! So i went with hostmonster.com, they have fulfilled all my hosting needs, plus some. dot5hosting.com really came with a stripped down package. I hardly got anything out of them, the ssh really sucked because i had 16,000 files to upload that were 3kb each, which would have takes around 3 days, for about 40mb, and i have 2mbit upstream. I zipped them, uploaded to my new host, and unzipped them in ssh. took about 20min total. Life made easy... Plus, no parked domains, no add-on domains, nothing of the sort at all. No nice scripts, not much of anything. If you want hosting, go to hostmonster and test-drive their test login for cpanel. The user config isn't like i was used to in cpanel 10, as they're running cpanel xp, but it's still 100x more powerful than vdeck, hwich is what dot5hosting offered.

Re: Best paid hosting site?
Appliedi.net rocks
Well what can I say......they are the best. I have 25 hosting accounts and a dedicated server that is in their datacenter and I cannot say more about their quality of service. Real, knowledgable people on the help lines. Virtuozzo VPS servers and asp.net ajax hosting. In the many years that I have used appliedi.net they have never failed to give unsurpassed support and service. Their website address is http://www.appliedi.net

Re: Best paid hosting site?
i would NEVER suggest 1and1.com as a host
HELL, they dont even use a real web control panel, its some piece of junk they created themselves, CPANEL is the way to go.
i know several users who come to the host I work with since we offer top of the line technology with low prices.
Clubhost City
we also offer a free hosting service which we offer near the same features but for personal use only.(cybertoad.net)
I work with the free division, and plan to get a reseller account from him soon since I love the technology and security he offers.
if you wish to have anything windows-based though I would not come here since everything offered is linux-based, which is his OS of choice for home & business use.

Re: Best paid hosting site?
I am hosting about 3 dozen sites right now at Surpass Hosting. They are the absolute BEST!!
Pricing, Service and Support is the best I've run across over many years.
For Domain Name Service, go to www.cosmicgeekdomains.com - a reseller of GoDaddy...same prices.
Standard Disclaimer: I am a customer of Surpass Hosting and have NO financial interest in it; I AM financially tied into CosmicGeekDomains.com

Re: Best paid hosting site?
Dreamhost is probably the best host I have ever seen. 400gb of space for 20 dollars a month? Can't beat that...

Re: Best paid hosting site?
I use GoDaddy for domain registrations because they're cheap. That's about all you need from a registrar.
But I can't believe I haven't seen anyone mention CrystalTech for web hosting. Their prices are very reasonable and they absolutely ROCK for their fantastic management tools, 24x7x365 (domestic) tech support, and incredible speed and reliability.
I've talked to customer service (real people) and they're fantastic too!
They just moved their entire datacenter down the road and my site was only down for 45 minutes in the middle of the night on a weekend!
I've had a couple of sites hosted there for the last several years and they've never let me down.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it upgrade it anyway.

Re: Best paid hosting site?
I've been a dedicated server customer of Host Gator (who basically resells for The Planet) for more than two years now and I must say that the value they provide is hard to beat. Over the past two years my box at Host Gator would need to be rebooted anywhere from 1-2 times a month. This was never too much of a problem as the Host Gator support team would have a locked up box back up within an hour or less. But for $180 a month you get your own box with all of the software updates done for you, php, mysql, apache, rhel, drivers, etc, etc... A great bargain with decent support. I'd recommend this option for people with a relatively successful site that is just starting out, or for people who have dozens of small sites. You can get a more robust box if you require it, but if you need a lot of support and a higher amount of uptime, I'd go with Rackspace who I've just started with for my most successful site that started out on the HG box. You pay a lot more at Rackspace, but you get a lot in return if high availability and scalability are priorities. If you have a domain portfolio of more than 100 names go with eNom and don't look back. GoDaddy is ok for a handful of names and other resellers out there may be a few cents cheaper than eNom, but they're usually fly by night and are not worth trusting your domains with, for example registerfly who was shut down for stealing customers names.

Re: Best paid hosting site?
ironically... its sad to see most of the hosts recommended here are "oversellers" i would have expected if anyone the eggxpert community to know better. i personally use http://www.montecarlohosting.net/ and http://www.tailormadeservers.com/ one i have a reseller account on. and the second is a fully dedicated server. (raptor and 4gb ram etc....) in reality those hosts cannot offer 3000GB of bw a month for 5$... (my dedicated server that costs 209$ a month has only 2000GB of bw a month!) you think they are gonna take that big of a loss? nope..

Dixie Systems ( www.dixiesys.com). They're located in Atlanta. They offer a nice range of plans; so, you should be able to select one that best fits your needs.

Interestingly enough, a lot of colocation facilities don't even monitor the bandwidth of their customers. Heck, I'm not even being billed for all of the cabinets I'm using.
Right now, I've got about 12 servers in three racks (one of which had the modems for our dial-up ISP) in a colocation, and we basically have unmetered bandwidth. We're paying for 4mbit, but we're actually getting much more than that, as they don't monitor it. So, because of that, I could offer my hosting customers 100gb...200gb...900gb and charge them for it, yet in reality it costs me nothing. Now, in truth, I don't. But I could.
So, generally, when I see outrageous bandwidth claims, I generally dismiss them in this way.
I don't even monitor disk space usage unless it becomes a problem. And I offer way more services than most of these people. Almost no one offers MSSQL and ColdFusion 7 (well, shortly 8), in addition to PHP and MySQL. No, I don't have a control panel or anything, but we own all our own servers, including DNS servers, so we can basically do anything we want. So, my conclusion? I'm my favorite hosting site! Hah!

the fact of the matter is your paying for a 4mbit dedicated up/down line (unmetered) im paying for a metered 100mbps up/down line. i have actually downloaded at speeds above 96mbps before. try doing that with your 4mbit line ;) colocation
isnt all that.... afterall. if your hardware fails. how long does it
take you to get the hardware in the mail from newegg and resend it back
out to the datacenter? your server could be offline for a week because you have a dead motherboard.... when you rent a server. thats the hosts job. and they have spare parts onsite just for this reason. and ssh isnt that bad... but when you compare it to whm/cpanel with fant and rvskins... its no match...
and
in theory. a 1mbps line couldnt even offer 3000GB of bandwidth in a
month running at full 1mbps the whole time..... id like to see you pay
200$ a month on your servers and rent them out to 4 people to use your
bandwidth. (at like 10$ a month each....)
overselling is overselling. no matter how you look at it....

Re: Best paid hosting site?
You completely and totally missed the point of my post.
I wasn't talking about the differences between colocation and dedicated servers. I wasn't talking about the differences between your shared 100mbit line and my dedicated uncapped line.
I was talking about the fact that colocations in general (you don't honestly believe that your hosting provider OWNS the datacenter in which his servers are located, do you?) are very lax and don't generally enforce a lot of rules. As such, people who offer hosting from colocated environments can offer just about anything they want to their customers as a marketing pitch, because it doesn't cost them anything to make good on those offers.
You sound exactly like someone who's fallen into that trap.
As to support, my colocation is a 20 minute drive away from where I am right now, and I am in the business of selling computers, servers, networks, etc. so if I have an issue with one of my servers, I generally have it back up within an hour. We employ about 15 techs perfectly capable of dealing with nearly any issue in the event that I cannot. Such is the benefit of having physical access to my servers.
Once again, my post was not about the comparative advantages of a colocation versus dedicated hosting.
