    Re: mcafee or norton?

I've personally never had any problems using Mcafee, I've used it for several years now, mainly because it (Mcafee security Suite ) came bundled with my Comcast service.I did use use Nod32 for awhile on the advice of my local pc shop, but after the fiasco concerning PG2 mentioned above, I uninstalled Nod32 and went back to Mcafee.

I noticed that Norton's security suite was rated #1 by PC World recently.Guess they cleaned up their act from years ago. I used Norton in my first pc 10 years ago.Was a Norton's fan until years later when I moved to another program and had a hell of a time uninstalling Norton's.Kept getting popups reminding me my AV virus subscription had expired. Finally ended up reinstalling Windows ( 98 I believe).Never went near anything with the name Symantec on it since.

    Re: mcafee or norton?

Okay guys, thank you very much for your decent opinions here. From what I see, most of you are telling me that norton is better than mcafee, then guess I need to uninstall my macfee and switch to norton. I have been using macfee, but my computer is getting slower and slower... but my company is using macfee on every computer... oh.... which one on earth is better?

    Re: mcafee or norton?

    norton is absolutely terrible

    mcafee is almost as terrible

Download malwarebytes, it's an open source anti-malware program that will kill mostly anything that's evil in your computer, since it's free you're not wasting money on terrible programs, there is an option to buy Malwarebytes so that it constantly scans your computer it's not that expensive,

regardless, give malwarebytes a try and see what you find

and that finding will be that it IS NOT a replacemnt for AV protection, it is protection for Spy/Ad-ware malware.  Do not confuse them.

I had the same problem uninstalling. It's pathetic when a company releases an uninstalling tool for their virus program. However, the virus protection form Norton is very good and I have never had a problem with it.

    Re: mcafee or norton?

I've had nothing but bad experiences with both Mcafee and Norton. If you wanna go the free route, in my opinion Avast ativirus is the best and Spybot for ad/spy-ware.

    Re: mcafee or norton?

Now here's my question, were all of these claims about Norton and Mcafee being terrible based on experiences from years past? Because from what i've read is that Norton has made leaps and bounds on not lagging computers and have made big progress on their 2009 software.

And I would definitely like to get a definitive answer just as the OP, but unfortunately most of these responses have struck me as way too biased from experiences with older software, not pertaining to what is currently on the market. Just my two cents.

    Re: mcafee or norton?

I'm using the current version of Norton 360 and its been working great. Runs much faster than the older versions ever did, '03-'04 when I used Norton last, and I've not gotten any viruses. It runs most virus checks in the background when my computer has been idle for around 15 minutes and it also makes backups while my pc is idle.

Overall I've been thouroughly impressed. Much more so than any of the free anti-viruses I've used recently.

    Re: mcafee or norton?

For those still deciding an option for Virus/MalWare/SpyWare protection I would like to add my $0.02. I have been using AVAST Home Edition for a number of years now. It is completely FREE to non-commercial users and only requires an annual registration. They update their database and definitions regularly and I have never had an issue yet. My Family and peers also use this based on my recommendation and they are very happy with it. I found out about them years ago when searching for the best Anti-Virus and they were in the "Top Ten" and the only one that was "FREE!"

If I had a business, this would be my solution to protect my investment. Hope this helps. Cool

    Re: mcafee or norton?

NORTON all the way. I have used them for many years, and they are now just about the best software suites out there. They are fast, effective, and average priced. The only downside is their support, which tends to be a bit irritating to deal with.

    Re: mcafee or norton?

In my opinion I would say Avast.  Norton uses too much resorces and i find that Norton misses a lot :( .

    Re: mcafee or norton?

Mcafee is the lesser of the two evils, but I'd definitely not get either..

I would say either Avast! or Kaspersky.

The popups from AVG Free are getting really annoying..  I have purchased multi-year licenses of AVG for several of my computers, but on my laptop that is not connected to the network 99.9% of the time, I get bombarded with a popup from AVG Free everytime I log in telling me about the limited time offer discount of AVG...   It's annoying as heck..  AVG assumes that if you're running AVG Free then you're not a loyal customer and it's ok to treat you like dirt... FAIL..  I won't be renewing my AVG licenses on any of my half dozen other computers because AVG Free is annoying the heck out of my on my non-networked latpop.

Even if it's just for a couple weeks, I don't think it's appropriate to start throwing up a pop-up everytime they log in with the only options being "Maybe Later" (popup on next login) or  accepting to pay AVG some money.

    Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAID

I never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.
