Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

ok Folks building m first computer. My mobo had 3 pci slots.

EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI DDR3 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

gms cool brought to my attention that the 9800 gtx's are at a smoking price. Tommorow I need to change my order so my question is.

    2 x 9800gtxs and a physiX card?

Same as above sans physix card?

    3 x 9800 gtx's?

3 x 9800 gx2's (is that possible or does each card take up 2 slots?)

    and last but not least...

    Whata bout 1,2,or 3  ge force 280's???

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

PhysiX cards aren't worthwhile to put money into them, there aren't any end products which utilize it...So, get either two or three 9800GTX's or two 9800GX2's, if you're insane enough to spend that much money on that many...Note that only two 9800GX2's can be put in SLi, there aren't any drivers which would allow you the use of three 9800GX2's...On top of the hardware and space limitations, you just simply can't fit three 9800GX2's on a  ATX motherboard...

Three-Way SLi is (So far) available only to these NVIDIA GPUs:

    GeForce GTX 280

    Geforce GTX 260

    9800GTX

    8800ULTRA

    8800GTX

    And these NVIDIA motherboard chipsets:

    nForce 790i Ultra for Intel

    nForce 790i for Intel

    nForce 780i for Intel

    nForce 780a for AMD

    nForce 680i for Intel

If you have that much money (AKA more money then sense Stick out tongue) however, you'd be better off waiting to buy the GeForce 280's and 290's...Or getting three 260's in Three-Way SLi...But GeForce 280's and 260's are overpriced and are underpowered when if you check its performance to price ratio...So they aren't really worthwhile until they have a significant price drop...

The best deal right now, for the money, is getting two or three 9800GTX's...Simple as that... Big Smile

    Respectfully,

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

IS the performance of the ATi HD 4850 and 4870 hindered by using a PCIe 1.1 slot? Mainly asking about the 4870 because of the GDDR5's bandwith.

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

You lose 2% - 5% of the performance of the card running a PCIE 2.0 Card in a PCIE 1.1 (x16) slot.

according to the reviews I've read, it makes very little(if any) difference.

The GDDR 5 is on the same board with the graphics core, so the bandwidth to the GDDR5 goes across the board, not through the PCI-E slot.

Also, nVidia has recently released drivers that allow you to do PhysX acceleration using your graphics cards(GeForce 8xxx series or above), rather than a PhysX card.  So, there really is no need to get a PhysX card.  nVidia recently bought Ageia, so they may not even offer separate PhysX cards for sale much longer.

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

So what about mixing the two in SLI?  I have an asus Striker II formula, and there are two pcie 2.0 slots and one pcie 1 slot.  The pcie 1 is in the middle.  I have two 8800gtx's sli'd in the 2.0 slots right now, but would it work just the same to sli the two of them in the top two slots, one 2.0 slot and one 1.1 slot?

Re: YES PCIe 2.0 and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

Great, PCIE 2.0 cards work with pci1 slots! Both pcie1.0 and 2.0 have the same slot, so u can use any cards with the same mobo.... the only problem is that if you use a pcie2 card with a pcie1 mobo, the card will be throttled and will not perform at its maximal ability...

In single slot mode, the slots are PCIE 1.1 x16.

In SLI mode the PCIE 1.1 slots operate in shares x8/x8 mode.

The Asus p5Q PRO has serious issues as was pointed out here.  http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/permalink/397633/396967/ShowThread.aspx#396967

Viewing  results googling, it certainly appears so.

Dang...only 2%? If my current mobo was just a bit better in a few other areas, I might keep it. Hmmm. I need to re-evaluate my next build.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102019

hmm is that 1.0 or 1.1 PCI-e  im still new to the PCI-e world lol.

.... Except for some Asus motherboards and video cards (listed in thread), the TITLE of theis thread still goes.

PCIE 1.1 and 2.0 are cross compatible with some performance diffrences. Sound card should work.

Yahoo! There go my worries about getting the HD3850 I was looking at, as long as the performance isn't affected its a go.

    Performance will be the same.

Even the best cards on the market can still not use the full bandwidth of 16x.

Would this affect my performance? I have a 680i lt motherboard but i have pci 1.0 slots only. I was wondering if getting 2 gtx 280's will do no good to me. Will this bottleneck me? I also have qx9650 cpu (not overclocked), 4 gigs of pc6400 ram  (but i use only 3gb), 2 500gb raid o , rosewill 950watt, windows vista sp 1 32 bit,

I can now buy my HD4850 for my new build (P5N-EM/HDMI in full-sized ATX case) without worrying.

Now for the real toughie: Q6600 or Q9300?
