    abreuma:
Well, I sent both newegg and paypal emails asking specifically if my order qualified for the 20% cash back promotion.  If I didn't make it in time I'll just refuse to receive the order and get the credit.
Same, I hope to hear from someone soon.  I hope newegg credits people that did not make the cut while the ad was still up... I think that would be a good move to smooth out things with some p****d off customers.

I really do not care who screwed this up. What matters to me is I shopped all day for over $500.00 worth of merchandise and I was counting on this deal to save that $50.00.  Newegg sent me the mailing telling me I could save $50.00 and now I expect to get the proper credit. No where during my shopping was I informed this deal no longer was valid!     I spend way too much money here, It is bad enough dealing with these bogus rebates, but now total sham deals!!

Funny how I hadn't noticed this thread before.

    My thoughts on it:

I think this may be all on PayPal

The assumptions about why the promo stopped may be wrong.  I believe PayPal screwed up things on their end which blocked participating vendors from processing any sales-to-be-discounted through PayPal.  I made a purchase from Dell late this afternoon using PayPal without any problem.  A short time later, I tried to make a purchase through Toys-R-Us but kept getting the error:

"This transaction cannot be completed because it is associated with a different PayPal account..."

I contacted PayPal phone support and reported the problem.  I was put on hold for several minutes and when the service rep returned, she informed me that there was a technical problem which was blocking PayPal transactions from Toys-R-Us and that I should try again tomorrow.  When I asked if it was just Toys-R-Us, she said that she wasn't sure because other calls were starting to come in complaining about not being able to process transactions due to similar errors..

If I were a retailer and customers trying to process orders were being blocked by PayPal's special discount processing, I'd immediately discontinue its use, too.

Re: I think this may be all on PayPal

Fact is that PAYPAL ran this whole thing - and the newsletter was just a copy of what PayPal sent them. This happened at MANY SITES NOT JUST NEWEGG. The simple fact is that the way PayPal worded the generic letter (that was sent to every company involved in the promo) so that there is nothing any of us can do. Read it and tell me they can't legally do what they did Sad . I am NOT defending PayPal at all and I hope this bite them in the arse, but they covered their rear ends pretty well with the *. Maybe we need to call BrightHouse and get some of tthe * hunters sent to PayPal.

NewEgg - Almost fault free they got taken for a ride.

    PayPal - <--- evildoers

    DirtyGecko:

Fact is that PAYPAL ran this whole thing - and the newsletter was just a copy of what PayPal sent them. . . .

The above quote is patently not true regarding the email sent out as a newsletter by NewEgg.  One can see a screen cap of this original NewEgg newsletter earlier in this thread.  For shortness, I will call it the big red bow tie email.  The big red bow tie graphic was entirely created by NewEgg, and contained in an email from NewEgg's servers.  Also, the big red bow tie graphic was seen on NewEgg's web servers for the special advertisement.  Again, completely under NewEgg's control.  In fact, later in the day NewEgg changed the expiration date on all occurences of the graphic from the 28th to the 26th.  (This was a particularly unwise move on NewEgg's part.  They should not have changed the underlying graphic!  They simply should have put a "Offer Ended" stripe on the graphic and let it be at that.)  DaKon says it best in his earlier post in this thread.

Re: I think this may be all on PayPal

I won't Blame anyone, but I was confused and dis-satisfied with the Promotion from morning onwards.  I wanted to order, but it seemed too uncertain and ambiguous.  Which means... [tah duh] this was a seriously unthought-out and insincere an effort.

I hope NE, et al., will actually put some effort into thinking through their future Promotions, and will not leave their customers wasting time trying to believe/verify/recover-from orders.  I don't want Miracles/Freebies, I just want predictable outcomes.   (Okay... I'll accept a few freebies in the process!)

[And it bescrewt a Xmas gift: a Q6600, to myself, for massive Excel number crunching.]

Re: I think this may be all on PayPal

I hope that NE runs another promotion with PayPal offering a 20% discount soon again.  PayPal is normally a reliable partner and as long as they are willing to pay for the discount themselves then NE has nothing to lose and its customers have everything to gain.

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this one

In response to the post above, I have to say that I hope NewEgg runs from PayPal (run, not walk) !!

PP isn't doing any favors by NewEgg here.

I agree. I used the paypal deal on overstock.com and their site clearly says it is limited to 17,000 uses. What the newegg small print say?

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this one

My Story:  I was on the chat channel when it went live and was told it was good for all newegg items, sounded too good to be true so I decided to wait till morning to investigate more since there was no limit except for the November 28th deadline.  Sure enough I found different answers on the forums, (Found Here http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/211275.aspx) saying it was good for only the items in the email,so i decided to go into neweggs customer service chat and talked to a rep.  The rep told me at first that the promo was good for all items on newegg but I contradicted and linked the original thread showing another rep saying the complete opposite of what my rep was saying.  Upon further investigation my rep confirmed it was only for the items in the email and not all items on newegg.  I told him to get someone on the forum and post in the thread to clarify because it was extremely confusing, he said he had emailed the apropriate people, soon after RoddyR posted on the thread.  The first post didnt really help, but then his second post shortly after went against all other knowns and said he had gotten confirmation it was good for all items on newegg.  Great!!! So I decided to finalize my order, after deciding on some components I decided to check the forums to be safe since it had been so shady already.  Thankfully I did, I saw that RoddyR had come back and said he had recieved confirmation that the deal has ended, WTF.  So I cancelled my order and didnt get hung over like many others did.  I feel newegg handled this very poorly, they changed their ways several times through the day and then changed the ad all together taking the deadline from Nov 28th to the 26th at noon.  An extreme waste of time.

End Note Edit:  I would like to thank RoddyR for doing a good job trying to solve this mess and getting us the info in as timely of a manner as he could, I know he saved me a big headache

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this one

I'm grateful that the posts on this forum saved me the $46 that I otherwise would have lost thanks to this demotion.

Unfortunately my livesupport rep would not even acknowledge that the image still showed the promo (but DID get an overlay put over it). At least she was nice enough to confirm my order was properly cancelled.

After nearly being burnt by this, I'm trying to find a service that will provide an authenticated and timestamped copy of a page so I have positive proof that such a promotion is in effect.. at least with rebates from dodgy outfits (*cough* T *cough* D), there's always the option of certified mail.

With this illdesigned Newegg demotion, as far as I can tell, you only get to know if you are screwed after 60 days.. Just, coincidentally, after the chargeback period on most credit cards.

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this one

I too would like to know if my order today will be given the 20% discount or not, I did see it show up on screen when I paid using paypal but didn't think to print that page out and yet it doesn't show anything on the invoice itself.

Seems as though all paypal transactions should be notified one way or the other if they're going to change the rules on the fly like this.

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this

I've apologized to several people today about this issue.  I tried my best to post up info as I got it in my inbox at work.  I've read this entire thread and although I disagree with some points made here, there is really nothing that can be said in Newegg's defense.  Several of us spent most of the morning trying to get details on this promotion when by the time we found out, the promotions funds had already been depleted.  We then spent the rest of they day escalating this issue to upper management.  I don't own the company nor am I a decision maker on this level, but what we can do is continue to escalate the issue to see what can be done to alleviate frustrations here and ensure issues like this do not happen again.

Again, I SINCERELY apologize for todays issues and will continue to update everyone as best I can.  I've been with Newegg over 3 years now and know they would never deliberately do this to their customers.

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this

I've registered with this forum just to make this post.

Everybody loses from incidents like this.

It looks to me like neither PayPal nor NewEgg was sufficiently prepared & organized to run this promotion smoothly.  I can allow NewEgg some slack because PayPal's mistakes likely made things more difficult for them, and that carried into the unclear promotion details.  But I think NewEgg should have gone farther to alert customers that the promotion had been ended early.  I shopped from work Monday morning, but could not order from there, and intended to buy after getting home.  I almost overlooked the change in the promo page banner, since I saw little need to reread what I'd already read about three times earlier.  I almost ordered one of the Ipod combos, but was lucky to notice the cancellation at the last minute.

I expect better than this from the Egg, after building two great systems with hardware purchased here (and causing a third to be built with Egg parts by someone else).  This is a reminder that anybody can screw up, unfortunately, and it will make me more cautious about biting at online promotions in the future.  If it can do that for me, just imagine what people who don't usually shop etail will think.  Storm

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this

I knew the paypal promo wouldn't last for the full run

All i did was read paypal's fine print in there add

most people didn't bother/failed to read any of the info on the paypal promo

thinking they would be getting 20% off the total amount spent on all site's listed accepting the  Paypal promo

I'll continue to buy products from newegg every time i need parts

I'll continue to send people to Newegg to buy there parts

Customer service via email live help or on the phone has always been a 100% satisfactory for me any time I felt the need to contact some one

And anyone i have sent to Newegg has nothing but good things to say about them

A buddy of mine didn't read a rebate date made the purchase a few hours before it was in affect And Newegg honored it when the company that received the rebate denied it

Plus the fact a blind drunk monkey can navigate the site with ease  makes life simple

Thanks Newegg for all your customer support

    Sales order number: 42376961
    Amount: $61.99
Time of charge: 11/26/2007 5:22:12 PM

Well... I suppose this order was too late to qualify for the 20% off? If so... I am very upset... I placed an order right after midnight as well and didn't get an "instant rebate" that I was supposed to. I chatted with a customer rep that said I had to contact them AFTER I received the product to get credit... what?

I feel like I got Eggsploited... maybe someone could Eggsplain why I got shafted Eggactly? Oh yeah... your 8800GTs are way too Eggspensive so quit price gouging.

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this

Newegg has been lying to people all this time. Every person on Newegg who I talk to says that Paypal ended the promotion. It is not true at all. I contacted two people at Paypal myself and they both said that they have not ended the promotion. One of them didn't know why Newegg ended the promotion and the said they would be looking into it. The other said that a merchant has the right to discontinue the promotion.

I have a theory here. My theory is that the merchants are paying part of the promotion themselves. When it started getting too expensive, they cut it off. The messed up part is that Newegg cut it off on the first day of the promotion when there was 2 more days to go. A almost sense of false advertising if you will. I was attempting to do a Paypal transaction all day and it was erroring out. Others had been getting similar issues. Newegg instead is essentially dragging Paypal's name through the mud, blaming everything on them when it wasn't Paypal at all.

Though the Newegg reps you talk to may not be lying intentionally, their lies may be based on false information. Someone higher up made it all up saying Paypal ended the deal when it just is not true. Paypal has been getting calls about Newegg saying Paypal ended the promotion, but it is just not true at all.

my order went through at 8:30 am PT, will I still get the $50? I wish we could get clarification as to when the deal ended. An email should be sent to all customers that used paypal to purchase products yesterday

Re: NewEgg & PayPal: Egg comes out stinky on this

I ordered in monday afternoon and I just heard about the deal getting cancelled. What is up with this?? The only reason I made my order was because of the $50 cash back that I thought I would be getting, and now I'm not even sure what is going on anymore. How do I find out if I ordered in time?? There's no notification or anything whether I will be getting my cash back or not. I've been a newegg customer for years and I've had nothing but good experience with newegg, I hope this won't be my first bad experience. I'm never at home in the day time and my aunt will definitely not know which package to reject for me if I have to do that. And I won't have time to bring it to the post office since their opening time is right within my work schedule.

to pixelvisions: it's an instant rebate? I thought we don't get the cash back until January?
