Hacking vs "so called" Skill
I was wondering how many of you Eggxperts have experimented with hacks? I'm sure most people have at least tried them, right? Personally, I have never used a hack. My reasoning for not doing so is... I play a game to have fun and for an occasional challenge. Hacking kind of defeats the purpose. It really drives me crazy when people hack. It can't be fun! Do people do it just to piss other people off, or is it because they suck otherwise? I don't know, let me know what you guys/gals think. sic

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
It depends on the game and the "hack". Since I don't really play fps games I can't really say what those hacks do but I assume most are intended to give the person running it some sort of advantage. However if everyone playing the game all have the same hack it would balance the game so as long as everyone playing knows the mod file is in place it seems fine to me. In several games I play I run "hacks" as they add content and if you are playing alone in sp or with others who all have the mod it is good. I have created mods of my own for one rpg'ish game, often adding features others were looking for as well as creating new maps and content for the game. Basically using the games engine and standard setup with all new content, this is more involved and several of us were on a team working on it, though if in the end there were only 2 of us that really did much of anything. Though for this sort of change the game is not able to be played unless the other people playing in mp have the file(s) as well. So they are all aware that it is not the regular game.

well always thought cheating as cheating yourself. If a person is not good enough to play a game with out cheats they might want to reconsider their hobby.

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
I remember the days back when cable modems were just introduced (I can't imagine the internet without one now!!)
My bro was big into CS. One day, he stumbled upon a hack that wallhacked and automatically aimed for the head. I'll tell you what, I hate cheaters and cheating, but it had to be the funniest thing when he would be able to target someone at the T spawn in Dust2. It's hilarious, and blatantly obvious. He was banned from that server, but I thought it was pretty awesome.
Now just because it was good for a cheap laugh, that doesn't mean I cheat. If you were able to do it at the risk of just losing a server and not the whole game (without buying a new CD key), I would suggest trying it for once in your life, because the results just inspire the term "rofls"
It is lame though to cheat all the time. That just begs the question "why play?" The system and rules that you have been so intrigued by in the game have been broken. GG Neo, you are now in The Matrix, and where's the fun in that!?

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
I agree sjr. If everyone in the server is running the same mod/hack then it's fine, but how often does that happen...Not often at all. At least not in FPS games.

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
I just wanted to quickly respond to sjr about hacking and what I think he's describing, modding.
Hacking is giving yourself a blatant and obvious advantage over an opponent (typically human opponent, esp. in fps)
Ex. Wallhack - the ability to shoot a gun through several walls, each made of 6" solid concrete, and still score a headshot, where the bullet should lodge itself in the first wall, and you shouldn't really even be able to discern the overall direction where your opponent is.
Modding, which sounds more like what you're talking about, is more like introducing new custom maps to play on in order for a different experience for all. Concerning the apps you describe, that wouldn't really be considered hacking either. It sounds like information was just stored better. Maybe I could use the reference of Diablo II to describe a hack vs. a mod?
Hack - Skills typically only go up to 20, with perhaps an absolute max of 40. A hack would be like having all skills at 100 (which is indeed totally impossible, unless you're hacking) This affects both single player gameplay (not a big deal if you do it to yourself) and multi-player (extremely harmful if it's set in a Player vs. Player environment, as the unhacked char has normal stats and will be totally creamed by the hacked player)
Mod - Changing the looks of characters and such, rearranging the storyline, using the engine to make a single player game now multi, etc etc, (no actual change to power of a char, can be described as more reorganizing information to maximize efficiency, which will definitely put an advantage to you but not overwhelming as hacked stats)

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
I've known of hacks, cheat, and other "helps" throughout my whole gaming life...And I've never used a hack, cheat, or otherwise, in multiplayer... Sometimes, when I've finished playing a game on it's hardest level, I go back through the game with cheats just for the heck of it, and it's normally fun, if not funny... But I'd never use it in multiplayer unless it was a designated cheat server, one which allows cheatcodes, or if it was a MoD on a MoD server...That's pretty much so it...And it's only for the fun of doing something a bit different in a game... For example look at Call of Duty 4, it allows people to shoot through walls (Thank you CoD4's physics engine)...That'd be considered a hack in any other game, but it's there, you can use it, even exploit it... So yea, I don't really use it, except for some fun in single player or in a MoD or other type of "specialty" server (Or with a bunch of friends in LAN, LOL)... Anyhows, I've got enough l33t skillz to play a game, kick butt, and but most importantly, have fun...Otherwise, I normally wouldn't have bought the game in the first place... Note: I agree with Scoops below, maybe not to such an extreme extent, but I do agree overall... Respectfully, PROACEX1
To build a PC or to not build a PC, that is a stupid question...An obvious one too...

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
Hacking shows lack of character (as in the above example) or outright antisocial behavior. I think it borders on criminal behavior.
Lack of character because it is stealing from an honest person who bought the game and is playing fairly. It would not be funny if someone came to your house and decided it would be cool to take a CD off your shelf. Then laugh about it to his friends and suggested everyone should do it just once for laughs. Antisocial because the worst offenders do it to piss people off on purpose and ruin their gaming experience. They get off on the rage it instills in others. All online cheaters should have their computers confiscated and be banned for life from game servers. If they hacked a bank or a credit card company, they would be facing jail time. I say being banned from all servers and paying a fine would be a good punishment.

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
fabulous, I'm going to go ahead and say that's a slam on me. Listen up. I've been cheated against. It's not fun. I'm not one suggesting that everyone do it all the time. I hated the cheaters, and then I saw this one time. Once. It was actually just absolutely ridiculous, to see how it works. I did deserve to be banned. Fine by me. However, with most games nowadays, they'll ban you across the board for the whole game. If that's what you wanna do, your choice. I don't really care what you do with your time. If I'm playing legitimately in one of those games, I'll report and you'll be out buying a new CD key if you want to play that game multi ever again.
Your solution is a little on the extreme side, if I do say so myself. To compare someone hacking a piece of software as malicious as stealing money from someone else is a little strong. If so, we'd better find all the people who infect our computers and data mine. Oops, there goes AT&T. There goes most of the social networks nowadays. The fact is something as extreme as that isn't going to happen, for one it being too difficult to catch the culprit (usually).
And if you want to talk about stealing, boy I hope you've never downloaded any MP3 illegally (I know I haven't), because that should be punished before hacking a game to be able to kill someone faster. You just stole real money from someone else's pocket. I'm not here to debate the MP3 thing, just an example.
And yes, there are people out there who get their jimmies by causing others discomfort and infuriation. Those people should be cycled out of the gene pool, and chances are they will.
It all boils down to just my opinion, if you are willing to take the risk, of seeing it. I did it once and done. I found it funny. If you don't, that's fine. If we play a game now, it'll be on pure skill I'd be fighting you, as I don't cheat. In fact what I forgot to elaborate on was I saw my bro do it, over whom I have no control over.
If you didn't mean to attack me fabulous, I apologize, but I noticed you used specific speak of things that I mentioned in my post. [Edit] As a P.S. - I would have to say that it's very hard to define this as "stealing." Your experience of the online gameplay is being affected here, and last time I checked, it's hard to "steal" experience. If it is considered stealing, I'll be suing the bullies back in high school They aren't affecting you physically, they aren't attacking the source on your computer, and to suggest that I have a lack of character because I found it funny once is actually quite egregious imo. I don't really care what you do. I realize it sounds like I'm saying cheating is ok, but it's not. Whether you do cheat or not isn't my choice, I won't cheat though. It infuriates the hell outta me if someone cheats. But then I realize it's a game, and I'm free to move to another server or try to get the cheater banned in some way from the server I'm on. To attack someone's character in a forum is something I would consider a sad day, although I understand flaming happens on a regular basis. I would just have you know I make no judgment on others here, as I was merely expressing an opinion, one which you blatantly disagree upon, which is fine with me. I apologize if I made it sound like I say cheating is a great thing. Just thought I could share my experience of it, both sides, without being attacked...

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
Good afternoon. I have been informed that there is evidence and an accusation that I hacked an EQ server that shall remain undisclosed at this time. This claim is absolutely false and could not be further from the truth, and the true facts in this case will exonerate me.
It is true that I circuitously modified an EQ registry in the past. I must stress, however, that I only adjusted a few settings. I never realized that what I was doing could have a negative impact on myself and those close to me. It was an unfortunate situation of a young man trying to situate and establish himself in the electronic world. I was recovering from a virus and trojan infection, and in competitive desire to return to the field quicker to be with my guildmates, I decided to temporarily adjust the game balance mechanics system. I realized what I was doing was wrong and immediately stopped after the fourth incursion. I have never - never lowered myself to such an act since and do not encourage anyone to do so. It is wrong.
Would you clearly state to your fans or swear under oath that you never hacked before in your life? 'Cause that would be great!

Well, I must say that I did not expect to see a short story by each of you. thank you well appreciated. Fun or serious, it takes the fun out of the game and makes it not for those who are not hacking... I'm done ranting.

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
I used to play Ureal tournament (the first one) all the time and it would never fail since I only played a certain number of servers that this one dude would show up everyday at the same time using an "aimbot" and he would get the sniper rifle and plink us off all day. So then everyone would leave and it ruined the game for everyone. COD4 is getting worse now too, people are cheating just to open up weapons and this is sucking really hard last night because I was on my way to maxing out last night lvl 55 and someone named "charliebrown" screwed the game up for us so I quit early yesterday.

Yes, I have also started to notice the hackers on COD4. It was bound to happen. Does with every game.

Re: Hacking vs "so called" Skill
I know I've mentioned it elsewhere on this forum in another thread like this one, so here goes again. I don't like online cheaters. If you want to hack something for single player or mutual lan gaming that's fine w/ me. Single player doesn't effect anyone else but you, do what you want w/ it IMO. Game developers put easter eggs and other little toys in all kinds of games. I think those add to the experience myself. I have done some things in LAN games that I wouldn't dare do online. The rest of the players I was w/ knew what I was doing the entire time and in most cases were joining me. We played w/ various hacks, tricks, etc. in a private environment at times and had separate fun w/ it. We played the game legit (many times) before any of this. I played w/ a few so called "cheats" last night in a single player game. I had a hard time viewing what I was doing as cheating due to the fact that they did not apply to the serious gameplay. All had to do w/ the "quickplay" type of environment. I had fun w/ a few of them. Didn't harm anyone and it was a completely diff experience. I have beaten this game and will beat it more. Other things I toyed w/ there had to do w/ the background and not the actual gameplay so I don't really care. Nothing I did provided any kind of advantage to me in serious or non-serious gameplay.

Punk buster catches some but lets alot slide thru, and it kicks me alot for no reason, and when my freinds come over and we both play online it will kick one of us sometimes for sure, not sure why but it does not seem very effective sometimes.
