Linux is all I run at home. At work I have a dual boot setup, but use Linux 95% of the time.

Hoping to put together a Linux media center with a server machine for storing my movies and music and replacing my TV with an HD monitor and box running mythtv.

I'm not much of a linux guru but I dual boot XP and Fedora Core 6 and I must admit it is pretty cool, but being a Computer Science major I am somewhat used to typing commands in a terminal.

    Re: Linux anyone

I have Fedora Core 6 running as a personal mail/web/ftp/x10 server.  It works great and I haven't had any problems.  Linux takes a bit of getting used to but it's also very stable and fun to play with.

I run CentOS on my web server and FreeBSD on both my firewall and file server. All the desktops in the house still run Windows (for now), but my daughter's laptop is a Mac. I'm not a Linux guru, either, but I get by ok.

    Re: Linux anyone

I am trying to run Mepis. So far it has been pretty good.

Also messing around with a few others trying to see what works best for me.

I run an AMD64 system, does anyone know of one distro that seems to work better than the others with a 64 system?

I am new to Linux, just trying to learn by teaching myself. That is the hard way to do it but no one else I know uses Linux.

    Re: Linux anyone

While i was waiting for my replacement laptop HDD I installed the 7.04 beta of Ubuntu. After using it for the weekend I realized why so many people claim that it's so easy to use.. because it really is! What I think makes it so simple, is the fact that everything is accessible from the bar atop the screen. No more navigating through countless windows to accomplish something! But, for battery life, I put XP back on it when the new HDD came. For some reason, Ubuntu doesn't natively allow scaling of a Celeron M. Also, with the integrated Compiz.. and the add-on of Beryl, you can really, really , customize the way your OS looks. Even as a noob at Linux, I was able to find some useful 'tut's on the internet to help me enable my Broadcom 4318 wireless adapter. Give it a try! I've also had positive expereinces with FC5.. no use with 6 yet.

When I bought this new laptop (you can find my review here) about a week ago the first thing I did is yank Vista out by the roots and replace it with Ubuntu 6.10, and then last night with Ultimate Ubuntu 1.3  I'm running Edgy Eft on my desktop and Dapper Dan on the 8 year old notebook that I keep around as a spare.

I tend to shy away from Linux just from general ignorance.

I wouldn't mind being schooled as to how good of an OS it is, what it can accomplish App-wise and how buggy/dependable it is.

Ahem, I like computers, do you?

    Re: Linux anyone

If you're new to Linux, i'd say to go with Ubuntu.  It's easy and there's a fair amount of support around for it.  But my fav. distro's are Slackware and SUSE.  I wouldn't start messing around with Slackware, it's more than just boot up a disk and install.  But SUSE is almost like Ubuntu, worth looking into.

Gentoo as the primary OS on my HP DV8372 laptop and the only OS on my server (47days uptime since I added a pair of new hard disks :)). Thread here about my server: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=503451

It has its good sides and bad sides. If it's set up right it's stable, pretty quick and reasonably simple to use. Bugs are only an issue for me when I try bleeding edge versions of software or do something daft :P.

Gaming support is still a touch lacking.

I have been playing with Linux for 5 or 6 years now off and on.

The command lines have to go before the general public will accept it.

Definitely agree with Fast AMD on that one! As it is not a problem for me to Google a solution or command line operators, most people won't want to do this.

    Re: Linux anyone

I played with daper for a few days, even managed to get my broadcom wireless card to work, but once I rebooted it for an update, the card refused to work no matter what I did, forcing me to go back to windows for productivity reasons...

Just a general question: is there any particular distribution that is in general game friendly, or do you have to buy wine or some other windows emulator?
