    Have a Question?

Do you have a question? Root has an answer!

While the newsletter is still in the works, I've been given the green light to start up the Ask Root column. This column is opened up to any one who has a serious question regarding... well anything Big Smile

    Root's Three Golden Rules:

    1. I'm not obligated to answer your question.
    2. I will honor anyone requesting to remain anonymous, but if you do not specify this I will drop your name in (and maybe as well as a link to your profile).
    3. Your question may or may not be featured in the column, or posted in my blog.

The Ask Root column is in "Beta" and we wanted to hear ya'lls thoughts on it. If you have a question already, feel free to PM myself or PROACEX1 who will be assisting me. Please title the PM: "Ask Root: yourname OR anonymous". If you state anonymous in the title, we will refrain from mentioning your name in the column (if it gets on the newsletter).

    Re: Newsletter: Ask Root Column

I'm assuming you are talking about Broadband modems because dialup is measures in kb, not mb. Big Smile

Most broadband modems these days support 10mb throughput. Your ISP will be your limiting factor. Most people don't get beyond 500kb on their uploads unless you are using a business class line.

Because root likes the capital 'A' more than lowercase 'a' and lowercase 'r' looks weird with capital 'A'.

This is the thought process of root. You asked. |o.O|

    Re: Newsletter: Ask Root Column

Dude, I'd suggest you make a new thread, but I'm gonna shoot you down pretty quick...

I think your DSL or Cable Modem is already configured to go as high as you can take it. To mess w/ the ISP's settings is inviting at best lots of internet instability and tech support heartache, and at worst a disconnect from your ISP for "Stealing Service". If it was that easy to raise your internet line's upload speed, and it were legal, everyone would just go out and do it. But it's not. And to try is just an invitation to bring a whole world of frustration on yourself in many ways shapes and forms.

If you want a faster internet line, just do what everyone else does. Shop around for the best package by looking as specifications based on what you can afford, and have a trained professional from the ISP set it up for you.

If you are not getting the speed you think you are paying for, it might be worth a free tech support call to your ISP to verify.

Just to clarify though, there are *2* speeds a ISP will "sell" you on. You have SUSTAINED and BURSTABLE bandwidth.

Example: I have a "3 MB/Sec" DSL Line, it's the second best line offered by my ISP, and the best I qualify for due to distance to phone co. office.

    The "Details" of my line are that I get 3MB/sec download <burstable> and 1.5MB/sec <sustained>, with 768KB/sec <burstable> with 384KB/sec <sustained>

That "means" my line is actually "always on" with 1.5MB/sec down and 384KB/sec up, with occasional "bursts" when a server is close enough or I have a good route to go up to 3MB/sec down and 768KB/sec up.

There's no way I can just "change a few settings" on my modem to get me 3MB/sec down and 768KB/sec up, because that performance is not "in my modem" it's actually more to do with how the rest of my ISP's network is operating. At best I maintain my same performance. At worse I mess up my modem setting and am down until I can get a ISP tech out to fix it. they can also terminate my service because I'm technically messing with "their" hardware/line. (depends on user agreement)

Hopefully this ends the need for the other thread, but feel free to start one to confirm what I just said...

    Re: Newsletter: Ask Root Column

heres the problem with that tho. twc is the ONLY cable/ anything in my area. they charge $699.99 a month for 10mb/s dl and 2mb/s ul. When comcast up north is $50 per month 30mb/s dl and 5mb/s ul.

    Re: Newsletter: Ask Root Column

You might not care, all your family members and neighbors might care, for various reasons.

    http://www.securityfocus.com/news/394

When they shut you down they ban you for life from ever getting the service again. No appeals. Imagine not EVER getting high speed internet AGAIN.

Edit: this was an article written in 2002, when it only took them *6 hours* to catch an uncapper.

Imagine how long it will take now that they have had 5 years of practice looking for people who try this.

Edit 2: I'm 7 miles East of Downtown Los Angeles. AT&T U-Verse Fiber Internet is not yet available for me. I asked in April, and they said "Sometime in Fall". Checked last week and they said "Early 2008".

Your problem is not unique. I Pay $50/mo for my line, because I wanted static IP's.  U-Verse is the same price fro 15MB down 3MB up.

BUT IT'S NOT IN MY 'HOOD YET. Oh well. Guess I have to wait.

That is so scary that is what I thought you might say.  eeck!!Indifferent

Since I work for a major telcom I can tell you it is a very very bad idea to try and hack your speed/DL caps.

    Re: Newsletter: Ask Root Column

Well that's better than say having a $3000 comp and not being able to run ANY servers on my home line even though I have static IP.

Just get together with 10 friends, and each pitch in $20/mo to rent a server you all get passwords to 24/7.

    Google search "CS:S Server Rental"
