What Classic Games Have You Played?

With the recent economy being how it is people seem staying indoors a lot these days. Games nowadays are boring. Not much is holding my interest. I got to thinking about a few games that I used to play back in the day. Here is a couple that I still remember.

Does anyone remember a game called MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat published by Activision in 1995? The game is a combat simulation that puts you in a giant walking Battlemech. It involves a war between two clans of the Battle tech universes. I remember playing it during the summer for hours and hours everyday trying to beat both of the campaigns. My favorite Battlemech would be the 75-ton Timber wolf. I remember customizing that sucker with a couple PPC cannons, medium pulse lasers, 20 pack of LRMs and two machine guns to round out the weapons. I was truly addicted to the game. I would happily waste my summer break playing instant action and trying to beat the campaigns. At the time the game had pretty good graphics. I would play Netmech online with other players. Well, it’s a shame that Microsoft has not released a new MechWarrior game after 4. Instead we got the ***** MechAssault which is ok but doesn’t have the feel of the MechWarrior series. I also played the follow up expansions, Ghost Bear, Mercenaries and All Hail Clan Jade Falcon. Those were the days.

Another game I used to play is Command & Conquer. That game had everything. It had Full Motion Video, nice story and kick a** units. I remember fondly playing it till 2am just to beat one more mission. Ha-ha, you know there was always one more mission until you go to bed. Besides, The Brotherhood of nod was truly awesome to play. It had a better story than just paying GDI. I would always root for the underdog. But one thing I really hated about Nod was its lack of heavy fire power. I would take for light tanks to take out GDI’s Mammoth tank. It was pretty hard to win multiplyer matches most of the time… I recently played Command and Conquer 3 and it is pretty good. I think it’s a lot better than Command and Conquer 2, which sucked, pretty bad! I only remember the crappy third person acting and horrible unit balance. It makes me wish Command and Conquer 2 had never happened.

I know there are many other good games that I never got to play. I never played Master of Onion 1 or 2 which I heard were pretty good. They recently released Master of Onion 3 which sucked. A game released called Galactic Civilizations pretty much killed that game, I guess.

I haven’t played too many bad games back then either. So do our eggxperts remember any pretty bad games that I may have missed? What classic games, either good or bad, have you played in the past? I am happy to share with you, big gamers.

When I was a kid, there were no electronic games.  Just mechanical pinball.  Then when I was an older teenager, games like "Pong" and "Space Invaders" were in arcades.  I remember driving to the airport with a friend to pump quarters into those machines.  The mid 70's brought the computer revolution.

I think I started playing games was 'Chips Adventures' on Windows 3.11? Or was it Skifree? But then Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake (I think Quake is better than Doom), and you are just like me Whitelotus! Command & Conquer is the best! I have all the C&Cs. The big disappointment for me so far was Red Alert 3: Uprising... that wasn't that great. MechWarriors was fun as well, Duke Nukem 3D, one of the best flying games for me was Terminal Velocity (or Fury3, same thing). =P.

Two games/era's instantly come to mind when I saw 'Classic' and 'replay-ability':

-Diablo 2/Starcraft

-Nintendo 64 "Classic" games (StarFox, Golden Eye, Mario Cart, Zelda, Mortal Combat, etc)

...I need to go find me a Nintendo 64 now.

Total Annihilation was incredibly addicting back in the day. Tried Supreme Commander which was supposed to be the new-age version of that game and was slightly disappointed. The graphics are impressive but the game runs slow and is a little slow-paced itself. I would gladly take poorer graphics if it meant faster gameplay. Maps are a little overwhelming in size sometimes.

I too feel like new games aren't as fun as the old ones... Too much focus on new features and better graphics and not enough on making a game addicting and challenging or simply a blast to play. Don't get me wrong, there are some out there but I think too much of the market is full of games that aren't worth full price.

Two games immediately jump to mind when you say classics...

Panzer General: Turn based strategy game with maps that were meticulously designed to be as geographically accurate as the technology would allow. The units were also historically accurate as far as the armaments, fuel, ammo, etc. and the icons were reasonable facsimiles of the actual military unit. Playing it on the PlayStation sucked because it was too "zoomed in" and pixalated... Its best on the PC and NOT the DOS 1.3 version. I still have a PC copy and play it from time to time... Its absolutely timeless.

Carnage Heart: Where to begin... It was only available on Playstation and came with two discs. Its like a mech warrior game... except you actually have to "program" your mechs (by using chips placed on memory cards) to autonomously do battle... The programming of your mechs is so complicated, the second disc is a tutorial disc to walk you through the very tedious (but if you're smart very rewarding) process. There are several mech bodies to choose from and about 100,000 combination of weapons and armor. Once you've designed your bots, you have to put them into production and the game is turn based from there. You have to use your money to invest in new technology and produce mechs to expand your territory. As turns go by, you learn new technologies and your bots come off the assembly lines ready to be sent into battle. Its NOT a game for those with Short Attention Spans or players who want instant gratification or even non-stop battles. Its serious strategy on multiple levels and only those who are incredibly patient and enjoy the meticulous "programming" of bots will have fun playing the game.

Prince of Persia for DOS! Great game and I started to play it again last winter. All you need is DOS Box and you are all set to play it, well and the game but that is free online. I recommend that to everyone.

Then for the C&Cs, I picked up Red Alert 2 and Generals a little bit ago, but I can't stand the resolutions, so I stopped

The Legend of Zelda and Link's Awakening. I owned them on their original system, and now I own them on GBA. That being said, today's gamers have it easy... the original Zelda is excruciatingly hard, but SOOO much fun. Maybe the casualness in modern games is what turned you off.
