Instead, I'll paraphrase a Family Guy quote heard last night:

"Hey, so my son got into DeVry."

"Oh...what'd he have to do - open the door?"

I cannot stress the importance of getting involved with school things, from senate to creating your own group they are all important. It was this that opened the door for me to get my internship, and my internship opened the door for my career as a financial analyst.

Point is start early, make moves for your career if you know what you want to be. Get involved and make things happen, these things you will add to your resume. Create a resume early on and add as you do stuff.

And these are the words of the Great TK ;)

Then there's the perception that we never really get a job in what we major in. I beleive the former more so than the latter. I also beleive there's other factors that dictate what we end up doing. Maturization is definitely a main one. I'm a big kid with a few, just a few, grey heairs, and I left 2 or 3 of those 5-6 jobs b/c I wanted to go Sking, and chasing romance, and .... yot get the drift. The there's external factors. I finally settle on Environmental Management by the time I finished grad school. Went right into the feild, but Bush love of shaving down domestic spending dictated how long that would last. So I'm currently outside the field, but have offers every so often to go back. I figure I'll wait, until that external factor has changed. LOL. So I whole heartedly agree w/ rootdude, you cant prepare for it, there's too much going on. You can make your chances better, but in the end, I believe there's some fate involved. I'm a little existential like that anyways, b/c we all need a little unknown in our life.

Lastly, participating in extracirricular stuff is also true, but also do some volunteer work, no matter how little, it'll do wonders for your resume, employers love that shyt, and it'll make you self-fuzzy and warm.

Peace all, Penewah

Being the old man around here, I came to computers by a completely different route. You see I went to a major University and came within 6 credits of finishing a mechanical engineering degree. Then I ran out of money and was forced to "go to work".... I always intended to get back to my degree but life always seemed to get in the way. So I spent 20 years in the restaurant business and ended up doing highly specialized refrigeration maintenance/installation. My last 5 years were primarily doing ultra low temp nitrogen systems -200 degrees and lower. Anyway I was working on a system watching a "New Horizons" being built. One day at lunch I went over to check it out and never turned back. I signed up for the MCSE program in NT4 and completed it. Then there was finding a job, which wasn't too bad if I could afford to take such a drastic cut in pay. I did, and its been allot of fun since.

I've worked for several ISP's, Built a couple and had many contract jobs. Its all been great and some of those jobs were really great learning environments. I did the career change at age 40 and that was 8 years ago. I don't regret it and I've finally out earned my last career. (I was paid pretty well in my last career).

I have even taken the plunge and taught classes in a 2 year college. I was teaching the CCNA, MSCE and A+ tracts. Its all fun. Now I just maintain my website and play at learning new things at the house, when I'm not working. As far as work has gone. I am doing windows, unix and cisco support. so take it from somebody who has been there. Just do what you like and try to do your best at your present task. Soon you'll gravitate to what you really like. You will be a sucess and remember, when you're doing what you really like its not so much to get up and go to work everyday.

PDR60

I went to college with the same generic "lolz computers" attitude...sadly the college I went to sucked (maybe that's why it was so cheap? :P), so I ditched after I ran out of money, no point in going into debt if I wasn't gonna learn anything. Then I found a post online looking for VSAT techs in iraq, they said they'd train, so off I went.

3 years later, I've got 3 years of VSAT experience, including stabilized dishes for use on boats and platforms. Not really fun stuff, and not what I want to do for the rest of my life, but it pays the bills (oh lawdy does it pay the bills), and in my off time, I develop voip systems :D
