Where to begin?

TheRootSource

I've shot/desktop-recorded all the material for ep5-6. I've basically created a software RAID on my fileserver using linux. I dabbed into a lot of different Linux commands and I plan on explaining everything I just did... it will just take a lot of work of editing and voice over. Pretty cool stuff though, a 3TB volume is sexy to look at. I just need to take the time to edit it all and get it just right.

Trial by Fire

My book is... fluid. As you might all know, it's constantly changing (read: 'maturing' -- hopefully). All it takes is one late night of staring up at the ceiling in bed to decide an entire character needs a lot more work. Sadly, that character is the main character so I've gutted everything out and I'm trying to start anew. I think it still needs a lot more work--I'm trying to stick with the general idea of the story but it might not work now... I'll have to think on it some more. You will noticed all my old chapters are gone and I've started over, and starting everything at Rough Draft 1. This is the perils of reading my WIP. For those out there who have read everything so far, basically I've changed Michael to being a nerd (shouldn't be that hard since I can relate).

You will notice a nice little bone I throw at you guys at the end of Ch1. I meant to show this part of the book later but I figured why wait?

TheManPages

Heh, well, technically we have the next part that's been done for a while now. I just need to get around to publishing it. If I was bold and really wanted to take this project to the next level, I could use the domain I recently purchased (TheManPages.org) and really go to town with this.... but I don't have the time. I'd love to one day though. For now, a simple Google pages will have to suffice. The most recent TRS episode wanders into TMP's territory, which I hope to use later. For now, it's on the back burner.

Movies / TV Shows

So I really want to see Tropic Thunder and I might be going today. I recently watched In Bruges which is a... quirky?... dark...comedy?...about two hitmen taking a break after a job went sour. You will notice the multiple question marks in that last sentence because its--different. Some parts of it I liked but I think for the most part I didn't like it. I'd have to say not worth the rental. Also got Harold and Kumar EFGB. Haven't watched it yet but I was a big fan of the first one. Netflix dropped off Shooter, which I saw in theaters and was wanting to watch it again, and The Brothers Grim... which looked interesting. I'll let you guys know how Brothers Grim is.

As for TV shows, I recently watched Spooks Code 9 which is a spinoff of Spooks. I'd have to say the first episode I wasn't sold but willing to watch the next episode. Second episode I started getting a little into it but I'd have to agree with everyone that I've talked to so far, it's no Spooks and doesn't deserve to use it's name. If you guys haven't ever watched Spooks, a BBC spy series based on MI5, go watch it! Fantastic series--even though I stopped watching after they brought in new characters. I wouldn't mind watching it again actually. What else? Ah, Psych is as awesome as ever, so is Burn Notice.

I got into MiddleMan, which is quirky fun show (even cass got into it, imagine that?).  My Boys--only for cass--which isn't bad. Flashpoint is an interesting cop drama. Weeds is getting really interesting and I saw the previews for Dexter *drools*. Speaking of previews, I saw Life is coming back. Awesome. And I watched The Mentalist a few months ago (It's coming out in Sept). That show kicks some serious a. I also watched Fringe (also comes out this fall) and that looks good too. You guys got to go watch that one.

Some other fall shows that I can't wait to see:

Chuck
Prison Break
How I Met Your Mother
Big Bang Theory
Eli Stone
House
NCIS
Terminator SCC
Pushing Daisies
Bones
Supernatural
The Unit

Some of the ones I'm on the fence:

Smallville (Seriously? When is this going to end?)
Eleventh Hour (original was a classic but this looks like a remake?)
Knight Rider (I didn't watch the tv-movie that they did but I heard it wasn't that great)
Valentine (I like the writer, he did Veronica Mars)
Gossip Girl (I'm off and on with this series, I should probably not watch it because I know I'll end up not liking it)

I know what you are thinking. Surely he doesn't watch all those shows. My friend, I do. It's one of my many colorful flaws (and why I need 4TBs... that will one day be 12TB)

Personal Life

Well, they gave me a three day weekend and I blew it on couch-time and movies. Talk about lazy. It's Sunday and I still haven't really gotten out of the apt. I did help dad out with installing his new water heater for half an hour but I didn't exactly help out all that much. Cass was expecting me back home to go work out.

Which, btw, working out is a pain. I mean, you know you should and you get there to work out and then you realize because you haven't worked out for so long that you are weak. And then it's depressing. A few hours later then you are sore... And then you THINK about going back because you feel guilty for not going but you just can't because it's too painful.

Eh, I think I'm one of the laziest people in Dallas.

What else? Oh, so work gave me three days off because 1) I've been working a lot lately and they pitied me and 2) The next two months I'll be working weekends. Woot!

My main project right now is Operation Stupid. Which right now I can't disclose what it is exactly, only that it's big and possibly illegal in some countries. In the next month or two, I might be able to share more, so stay tuned.

Hey Root, have you tried a first person point of view for Michael Cain? Your blogging shows that you have a pretty strong voice and the ability to push across a lot of personality, and I wonder if you might find first person more liberating for this specific story. Currently, even with the new revision, I think the voice feels a bit mixed...pure third person from Michael's perspective (or a different character's) in some places followed by very impersonal (omniscient, as Jim Butcher categorized it, I believe) narration in other places. If you are overhauling the story, it could be worth seeing whether or not changing the POV of the narrator is better for you and allows you to present characters, environments, events, thoughts and feelings better--one of the main dislikes I had with your first draft was that the characters never really popped out for me, visually or emotionally. I'm not sure switching POV radically is really the proper suggestion for that, of course, but I figure it could be worth bringing up since you mention your own personal affinity to the Michael Cain.

The other thing I would recommend right now is to watch out for typos, grammar errors and that sorta thing. Even if it's a rough draft, those parts should be as polished as possible because those little oversights can throw someone out of immersion. For example, check your story summary/tagline and even the first line of CH1.

Keep at it, good sir. I admire that you're even doing this. It was awfully discouraging today seeing only 9 people show up for a screenwriting class and having it canceled less than a week into Fall semester. Wish more people still went after 'impractical' pursuits and arts.

Be good.

My god he is alive! Haha, how goes life my friend? Yeah, I have a long way to go (grammar, etc). I did try 1st person and it was hard for me. Couldn't seem to get it right. I don't know if it's because I've written (or attempted to write haha) in third person most my life or what.

Yeah, I change the---POV I guess--a few times. That's my poor attempt at getting the best of both (all) worlds. I should probably just stick to one. I think I know where all my mistakes are, it's just correcting them. I find it hard to be able to write what I want to convey.

My line of thought, originally, was to get the idea down and the polish it later, but even that is difficult.

At this point, I'm just glad I got a day job.

So you read Jim's blog?

Mother Trucker...!

I was trying to delete Ch3 but accidentally deleted the entire book. And my 'upgraded' account just expired so I can't create a new one.

*sigh*

Guess I'll be working on my other project for a while.
