CES 2008: Root's Picks

Published 09 January 08 10:27 PM | root

Here are the new techs that peaked my interest this year at the Consumer Electronic Show (2008):

This one is Alienware's curved display. Think of two 24inch wide screen displays side by side. I can see this being great for gaming as well as simulators. It's a DLP monitor that has .02ms response time. That's right, I said .02ms response time. Can you say dang?

Next up is, of course, is the BFT. That's a 150" (8ft by 11ft) of plasma display that holds a whopping 4k resolution. This would look great in my apartment if I had the wall space.

Now this next one is something that I've been dieing to see in stores. Wireless power! Unfortunately it's only at short range but just think, long range wireless power could be here before I die! I can see this for the office, your desk is like a powersupply and all of your mobile devices get powered up without having a jungle of power cables.

My last pick is a sick looking monitor/technology called OLED.... that will burn my wallet when it hits the stores. It's the width of three credit cards and has a one million to one contrast ratio. Right now they only have a 27" and 11" display so root will be waiting for the 42" version.

Untill next CES,

#

Dangit, no booth babes...Er, oops...

Anywho's, sweet Root, nice picks!

Just remember what type of GPU's it'll take to power a "whopping 4k resolution" monitor...You'd likely have to play Call of Duty at it's lowest settings, not to mention Crysis, CoD4, and anything DX10 would be out, LOL...

Me, I'm waiting for the 9800GX2 (Which could actually run a 8MP display like the one you showed above): http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/05/exclusive_nvidia_geforce_9800gx2/

Or at the very least the 9600GT: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/04/nvidia_preps_9600_gt/

Your Minion,

Nice picks.

The wireless power.  Thats one i have started to see.  I saw a place selling them already.  It was ~$80 for the pad and ~$25 for an adapter for a motorola RAZR i think.

I considered getting one and modding it for my Zune  :)

Nice reviews there Root. Where were you I was there as well? Did you participate in the frag tournaments while you where there? The Alienware's curved display was one of the best that I had seen there.

I didn't actually go. I really wanted to though. Did you get into the frag tourny?

# Tracer76 said on February 17, 2008 9:57 AM:

Yes and I won a 750PSU and a CM Sphere in the tourny. First time wining anything. Played against X-30 at the time.

Here is the PSU

What I like about that PSU was the max out put goes from 750 to 900watts.
