Black Monday for Newegg

Published 26 November 07 10:32 PM | root

So if you haven't been on today, or haven't checked your email, here is what you missed:

Newegg advertised a Paypal promotion of 20% off ALL of their (newegg's) products. They advertised that it would last all day on Cyber Monday. By noon Paypal came back and said "Hey, we ran out of money for this promotion for your site. No money, no promotion. Sorry."

So, right off the bat, Paypal shafted Newegg. OK. I understand this. Paypal is now on my poo-list (we will NOT be using them for the Computer Tree money donations if I have anything to say about it).

"Why is everyone crying murder" you might ask?

When Paypal did that, Newegg was caught with their pants down (for a better lack of a metaphor). They were caught off guard and as such probably didn't have the processes in place for such an event. What they didn't do:

  1. Some of the promotion codes might have been accepted (for the 20% off) but not refunded? (still have yet to confirm/deny this--too soon to tell). And when asking customer service, they directed them to paypal.
  2. Leading me into #2. Newegg's marketing team didn't convey this promotion to the customer service center (and all the other silo's of Newegg)... Giving wrong information about the 20% (only some of the products at first... when in fact it was all of the products).
  3. Many people who were at work didn't have a chance to shop.

Obviously, most people are angry about #3 and #2. But there are a few special people in the world who got dinged with #1 (reportedly).

What does root think?

Newegg, you got caught with your pants down but you should have done your homework. And if you did do your homework and knew that they only had a limited budget, you should have conveyed that in the newsletter. Come ON Newegg. On CYBER MONDAY, do you HONESTLY think that you wouldn't go through the budget? I don't care how big they said it would be, you should have made them put it in writing, "I Paypal will pay for this promotion, no matter what".

I give you props for getting the immediate problem resolved in a somewhat timely manner... although you DID direct them to Paypal. While I applaud you at your devious ploy to one up that back stabbing site, you still should have handled the customer right then and there, THEN direct them to Paypal to witch slap them (my GF would gladly do that for you if you'd like. KF FTW!).

Now what will you do to heal our aching wounds? You tempted us with sweet whispers of promises and failed to deliver. We are your loyal minions but many of us are hurt. We know you were wronged, but remember that we were wronged too and it was you who we had entrusted (NOT Paypal).

Now with that off my chest, I would like to end this post with a special thanks to RoddyR, one of our EggXpert admins, who fought the fires for us and got the information we were craving. I know, ironic. But it isn't EggXpert's fault this happened.

You still haven't lost my faith Newegg, just do your research next time.

EDITIED:

Are you one of those people who shopped on that day but don't know if you are getting your 20%? Subscribe to this thread which we will be announcing any updates regarding this... incident.

The thread in which you participated at NewEgg's own Eggxpert forums is below (link).  My feeling is that NewEgg will respond to this mess in a positive manner - just an instinct.

4. Offer Period: Offer starts on November 26, 2007 at 12:00:01 am Pacific Time and is available for a limited time only. Offer is only available as long as the merchantÂ’s website indicates that the 20% cash back promotion is offered, but no later than December 10, 2007 11:59:59 pm Pacific Time.

8. Restrictions: PayPal reserves the right to cancel, suspend or modify part or this entire offer at any time without notice, for any reason in its sole discretion. This offer cannot be resold or transferred.

PayPal has their back covered and I will never defend them for what they did, but the fact is they have their arse covered. NewEgg isn't to blame.

The supposition that NewEgg isn't too blame for the emails they themselves (NewEgg) sent out is not credible.

I too would like to commend Roddy, he did as good of a job as he could trying to solve this mess.

Sales order number: 42376961

Amount: $61.99

Time of charge: 11/26/2007 5:22:12 PM

Well... I suppose this order was too late to qualify for the 20% off? If so... I am very upset... I placed an order right after midnight as well and didn't get an "instant rebate" that I was supposed to. I chatted with a customer rep that said I had to contact them AFTER I received the product to get credit... what?

I feel like I got Eggsploited... maybe someone could Eggsplain why I got shafted Eggactly? Oh yeah... your 8800GTs are way too Eggspensive so quit shafting the customers.

It's official. Shafting is the word of the week.

About root

I currently live in Dallas, Texas and work at an IT outsourcing company as a SAN Storage Administrator. You can say I'm one of those 'just out of college kids'.

Hobbies: writing, computer building, reading (usually computer books but I get around to SciFi/Fantasy once in a while), movies/tv, bars, IT security, and of course Eggxpert.

Not much of a Myspace/Facebook kind of guy. My top (dot com) sites I visit are Gmail, Eggxpert, Writing, and Digg.

In short, I'm just another guy with a computer and an internet connection.
