The Great Laptop LCD Screen Scam!!!
The Great Laptop LCD Screen Scam!!!!
Hello everybody, sorry I haven't written anything for so long. I usually only get the urge to write in my blog when I discover something truly outrageous in the tech world, or when I feel I have a bit of info that could help others when it comes to there computers. Lately I have had nothing to say, that is, until today.
A customer of mine who purchased a laptop from me back in Feb of this year recently came back to me wanting some warranty work done. You see the screen had gone funny. Instead of displaying the proper images, it looked more like a brilliant LSD trip as opposed to a proper LCD screen. Since he purchased a refurbished laptop which only came with a 90 day manufacturer warranty, I also sold him an extended 2 year depot warranty. One thing I didn't know (but really should have) was that the 2 year extended warranty I sold him, which I purchased from the warranty provider, didn't cover laptop LCD screens. A quick conversation with the distributor where I purchased the laptop revealed that they would not take it back either.
Why do standard and extended warranty's not cover laptop LCD screens? Well that's an easy one. You see, after I learned that the warranty company was not going to cover it, and learned that the distributor wasn't going to do anything about it, I made the dreaded call to the original laptop manufacturer expecting the worst. Well I got the worst, the manufacturer said they would be more then happy to replace the LCD and that they could have the laptop back to me in as little as two weeks. The charge.............only $700.
Yes that's right. 700 freaken dollars. That my friends is outrageous.
Now I knew this was going to be the case. The last time I called a big box manufacturer about a broken LCD screen was over three years ago, and it was just $600 then. Depending on what kind of laptop you have purchased, $700 can often be more then the original purchase price of the laptop. So I said, "There has to be a better way", that and not wanting a really good customer of mine to be disappointed in me, I set off to find one, and I did.
The big box manufacturers and the extended warranty company's are pulling one hellava scam over on a the consumer. I found a website that sells laptop LCD screens. Granted it still cost $300, but that's way better then $700. Not only will they sell you a new LCD screen for your laptop, they even have online instructions on how to change the LCD screen on your laptop.
Now you are asking, "but does it really work?" and my answer is HELL YES IT DOES!!!! WOOOHOOOO!!!!
I took an older dead laptop that I had in my shop, removed the LCD screen per the instructions from the website, and successfully placed the LCD screen into my customers laptop, and it works great. Granted the new screen is slightly smaller, but I did it for him free of charge, and that is way better then paying $700.
Changing the LCD screen in a laptop is so easy, that I am surprised that nobody has written another blog piece about this (or maybe somebody has and I just haven't been paying attention).
Regardless, the info you need to help your customers, to help yourself, and to save some serious money is http://www.screentekinc.com/.
Enjoy people, you can thank me later. ;-)
