GmsCool interviews Sidicas
Ok everyone tends to wonder, so I'm asking. What's you main interest in the Chinese culture?
I NEVER thought I would study foreign languages or even cultures.. I always saw myself as a geeky computer science type with a strong background in software development and programming. Things have a way of turning upside-down on you when you least expect it. Especially when you've got great teachers who really know how to get their students interested in topics and expand their horizons. Chinese language and culture is so fascinating that I often stop to wonder why people don't learn more about it. Instead of asking me why I'm interested in it, perhaps you should be asking why other people aren't? More likely I think that they have absolutely no idea how fascinating Asian culture and language really is. I had a friend once in high school that told me programming languages aren't real languages. After many years, I've come to a very simple conclusion that they're actually quite similar, the only difference being that spoken languages are based off of culture and programming languages are based off of mathematics. At least, that is what I strongly believe.
What field are you pursuing to be in, and do you have a "back-up" career lined up?
Software Development.. If I can get into that, then I'm on target for my career.. I have been building and fixing computers since I was a very little tot back in the days when it was $3 an hour for a connection to the Internet and the only ISP that didn't have a long distance telephone number was AOL. Where the concepts "Cable Modem" and "Internet Access through a cable line" was still a "theoretically possible" idea and only existed on paper. I really like mathematics and I love working with software. The reason for that is because when working with hardware, I always get the feeling that I'm the kaboose of a long train or in the last seat of a roller coaster. Working with hardware that other people have designed, tested, and sold seemed a little depressing to me. I want to be the one doing the design, testing and selling. I want to be towards the front line, or at least the middle, and not at the back. Though I certainly do have a lot of experience helping end users with computer problems. Certainly those who make a career out of building computers and helping users with problems deserve all the respect in the world for the billions of problems that they run into while working with computers.
What color is blue? hehe
I was lucky to have an awesome art teacher.. And she always said... "A color is not a color until it's next to a color".. I really liked this saying as you can't have good (yin) without evil (yang).. You can't have light without darkness, and you can't have blue without the other colors.
What is your biggest thrill being on EggXpert?
Helping people with their all their computer problems. It's both fun and educational.
Funniest thing seen on EggXpert?
The "Ask the Dude" thread.. Of course there is also a lot of hilarious stuff in the YouTube area of the EggXpert forums.
Hows the job hunt going?
Pretty good actually. I have a bunch of job interviews lined up this week that I'm very excited to go to.. Some of them are very serious big companies and they've got lists of regulations and such that they need their software developers to follow. It would absolutely be an honor and a joy to work at such prestigious places and put what I learned in college as a Computer Science major to great use.
What systems have you built (for yourself) and what are you running now?
A lot of people would probably be shocked to know that I'm not a performance junkie.. I build very quiet, very long lasting, and extremely power efficient PCs. Many of the ones that I have are over 10 years old and are still chugging along just fine running Linux desktops and servers. You'd be surprised what you could do with an old Pentium 3 processor, a great server Linux distro like Debian, and a box of ECC RAM sticks..
What are Your Favorite Anime?
Tough question tough question.. I spend much more time watching movies these days than Anime.. There is only one Anime that I keep up with on a regular basis because I like cute little love story animes.. So I'd have to say the Ah! My Goddess series. The new seasons that have just come out are absolutely beautiful in both artwork and music. I've been with the series for a very long time and recommend people read the Manga as well.. The seasons are "PG" rated and my little sister likes the series too..
Do you have any pets?
Yesss I do! Want to see my little Angel? Yes, her name really is Angel.

Whats your favorite picture of yourself?

Whats your favorite picture/slide show/video ?
*(Coming soon?)
How Does it feel to be the one with the largest number of posts for over 3 months strait?
Everybody gets their 5 minutes of fame. With enough time and dedication, you can excel at anything.
Your Favorite OS? And Why?
Believe it or not, it's Windows XP. I used to be a huge Linux zealot back in the late '90s where it was quite shameful to be running Windows 98 or Windows ME instead of Linux. I used to wear Linux T-Shirts every day of the week and even handed out Linux stickers and Debian GNU/Linux CDs to the unfortunate souls still running Windows 98/ME. Things have certainly changed a lot since then and when it comes to gaming, there is no better gaming Operating System than Windows. For most other things, I use Linux. It's a matter of using the right tool for the right job. It's impressive that so many people can build a computer using only a bent paper clip, but the person with the screwdriver will be able to do so much more in the same time.
What other Forums have/do you use?
EggXpert of course is my favorite forum. Soompi is my 2nd favorite forum. Soompi has areas to talk about everything! They've also got some neat features there that I think EggXpert might learn from.. Of course, EggXpert has many things that Soompi doesn't, such as the great people that hang around that help so many with their computer problems. And of course, the new built-in chat feature of EggXpert which everybody should go check out if they haven't already!

In our latest round of Member Interviews, TempestKing and Cindylou28 take turns asking each other questions. Special thanks to IamHydrogen for inspiring some of the questions used.
TK interviews Cindylou ~
-
Where were you born? I was born in Gardena, Ca.
-
What is your geeky obsession? I don't think I have a geeky obsession.. if anything Eggxpert is the closest.
-
Favorite energy drink? I personally do not like energy drinks. I don't think they work, but if I had to choose one, it would have to be Redbull.
-
What's your favorite game and why? are you competitive? I don’t have a favorite game. I am not much of a gamer. I watch my brother play and sometimes he makes me play with him. Recently, he’s been playing Gears of War, and of course I am right there with him with the other controller. I enjoy playing Guitar Hero with my friend. I am not competitive at all, as long as I finish the game or get far enough, I’m content. An all time favorite is Nintendo!!
-
What’s your favorite food? OMG…. I love to eat. I can’t just choose one, there is so much out there. I am open to try new things. I wasn’t always this way; as a child, I wouldn’t even consider trying something that looked or smelled weird. As we grow older, we change our views on things. Coming from a Salvadorian family, I would have to say Salvadorian Tamales. I can eat 5 or 6 when my mom makes them. =)
-
What’s your absolute favorite place to visit? Day or Night, I love going to the beach. It's my all time favorite place to go by myself or with friends. It’s simply an amazing place; you have the Sun shining down on you, a cool breeze, the sand between your toes and the ocean. I mean what more can I ask for? It’s also a great place to clear your mind and just relax. I've done this a couple of times.
-
Where do you want to travel the most? List 3 places :) Let’s see... three places. The first two would have to be where my parents are from. My dad is from Nuevo Leon, Monterey Mexico and my mother is from El Salvador. Sad, but I have never been to their homeland. I would love to know first hand how it is out there. I’ve heard so many stories. My third would have to be Europe.
-
What are some of your nicknames/alias's (SP)? and how did you get them? Cindylou = was given to me in high school. Everyone thought I was sweet and nice like Cindy Lou Who from “The Grinch.” It stayed with me. Chin Dee = this nickname was given to me by one of my co-workers. It’s my Chinese name, I gave him a Hispanic name. lol Another nickname I have at work is Cin- Dog. I don’t know how I got this nickname, someone called me that once and everyone else began to pick it up. Flaca = this one was given to me as a child by my family; it means skinny in Spanish. I’ve always been thin. My sisters call me Funky Monkey; I love to see them laugh, so I will do some crazy stuff to get my job done. Haha.
-
What is your plan for taking over the world? Making people laugh!! Laughter is the key to many things.
-
What's your favorite music? I love to listen to everything. I love Salsa music, I just need to learn how to dance it better. I only know the basics. I also enjoy rock music!
-
In what do you consider yourself a expert? Helping people in need.
-
Is there a place you hate to visit and why? Hate is a strong word. I dislike going to my aunt’s house. She loves to compare me to her daughter and judge me because she thinks I’m weird. I’d rather not go to her house.
-
If you could be any part of a PC, which would it be, and why? :-) If I could be a part of a PC, I think I would be the HD. It holds a lot of information and without it you would have nothing.
-
How old are you? I will be 22 in a couple of days.
-
What is your #1 thing to do to waste time? I love to watch movies… when I have nothing to do, I drive to Blockbuster and rent movies that I haven’t seen. Another thing I do to waste time is read.
-
What is your favorite quote? "You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life." ~ Albert Camus
-
Who is your favorite hero? Wonder Woman!! She is awesome. :)
-
What is your guilty pleasure? When I am home alone, I love to dance around my house in a tank top. Like Cameron Diaz in Charlie’s Angels when she is dancing in her panties… I don’t make a mess. LOL haha
-
When refilling TP, over or under? I don’t know why but it has to be under.
-
What is your most treasured possession? My most treasured possession is a pair of ear rings and a ring my older sister gave to me. I love my sister so much and she is sick right now. =(
-
Who is your favorite eggxpert and why? I don’t think I have a favorite eggxpert yet… however I do enjoy reading what Volfann has to say in his thread “Ask The Dude.” Got to love it.
-
Where is your favorite place to party and why? My favorite place to party… I live in Southern California. There are too many places to just choose one. I love to go to places where I can dance all night and laugh with my friends. Pretty much it would be anywhere as long as I am having a good time.
Cindylou interviews TK ~
- What's it like in Kansas? Would you recommend visitors and travelers?
Cold winters, hot summers, but overall it's pretty nice. Especially the fact that you can pretty much have any house you want for about 500K. For visitors and travelers, I would say that the Plaza is one of the best things to visit, followed by Crown Center which is basically a large mall. For food, we have some of the best BBQ around - hell, KC materpiece was created here. Restaurants tho, that I would suggest Bristol (seafood), Bo Lings (chinese), and Jack Forellia's for (BBQ).
- Are we ever going to get a picture of you on Eggxpert? I dont think I've seen one yet.
I promise I will have a few pics eventually. I know I've said that about 3 or 4 times now tho.....
- Are you a competitive gamer? What is your all time favorite game?
Not so competitive but I do like to game, just not enough time these days to say competitive. Fav game, that's tough - but Civillization 4 for strategy, Lineage 2 for MMORPG and Chrono Trigger for RPG-ol school.
- If you had 1 wish, what would it be and why?
For my brother and sister to finish college, so that they might be able to get their lives back on track. Right now, they just get into way too much trouble for stupid things.
- When refilling your toilet paper, do you prefer it over or under?
Over
- What do you spend too much time doing?
Calculating and finding diabolical ways to take over the world, I'm a slight megalomaniac :)
- Most embarrassing moment?
Being extremely intoxicated and attempting to fight a 300 lb guy for fun. Got him down once, but then it just went down from there. Btw this was at one of my parties lol....
- Where were you born?
Baltimore, Maryland
- What is your most geeky obsession? =P
Collecting music of all types just to build the largest music collection or dominating every RPG to the point where I send in recommendations to strategy guides to improve or fix problems within them lol.
- You just went to Vegas for the first time - how was it, and what did you do?
Vegas was pretty nice, especially since i dominated roulettee. I had a confrence to attend for some financial software which was the real reason for me to visit Vegas. But I took my gf as well, and we saw the Phantom of the Opera and had dinner at the Delmonico steakhouse :) all of which was very good! We did a little touring of Vegas and at one point ended up in a bad part of town, which was interesting.....that was the first time my gf was offered coke... and not the drink lol. P.S. we dont do anything of the sort :)
- I noticed you're interested in writing. What do you write? Any samples?
Yep, I've been interested in writing since I was about 7 years old. The typical things that I attempt to write are sci fi / fantasy works, a lot of which spawned from the desire to become a video game developer when I was young or at least a story writer for RPGs. Currently, I have a project that I am working with a friend on, and it's about 200 pages of really solid story, but it's not complete yet :( Actually, we havent worked on it for about 3 months now :( ....... As far as samples go, I really should start a blog for that, shouldn't I?
- How many "man cards" does Root still have at this point? How many do you still have? How did you lose them?
I need help on this one. What "man cards" are we talking about? I've been gone too long so I think I'm lost on this one.
- If you could be any part of a PC, which would it be, and why?
I would probably be the psu, just because of my megalomania tho. The psu to me is the heart of the entire system and - without it - the whole thing fails. And if you treat it bad, it can zap you hehehehe ;)
- How old are you?
23
- What is your most treasured posession?
My most treasured posession would have to be....humm well It would have to be a tie between two things really. Both were given to my by my current girlfriend at important points in our relationship. The first was this little trinket she got when she was back in her home country of Indonesia, which has a lot of sentimental value to her. The second has to be a scrapbook she made for me for our first anniversary; the amount of effort she put in this project still surprises me; it details each little step of our first year together. Other than those, I really don't value posessions too much as I think society has gotten too wrapped up in posessions as a statement of status.
- What are your opinions regarding the current state of the video game world and its perception in the real world?
I have to say that I am very happy for Nintendo because of their continued effort to create new paths for the industry, and I really hope the Wii takes off in the next few years as new titles come out. Now, I am one of those people that believe the video game industry helps society more than hurts it, so all those people wanting to slam the industry for violence can kiss it! RPG's and strategy games definitly help define my interests, particularly writing and history. Thus, I think as a society we should embrace the video game industry and what it has to offer :) I will say this tho, I do miss those old school rpgs... anyone remember Dragon Warrior?
- I have a list going... Do you watch sports on TV?
I am not a TV person in the least, but I do watch KU sports on TV and very little soccer.
- If money were not a concern, what would you be doing?
Traveling with my family and gf - visiting Spain, Italy, Greece and Sicily particularly :)
- What is your #1 thing to do to waste time?
Listen to music of all sorts for hours and hours on end !
- Do you have a favorite movie, actor and actress - and why?
I am a big fan of the Lord of the Rings movies because I am a huge fan of Tolkien and the various concepts he weaved into his stories. Like the Industrial Revolution, ecology and racism. No real favorite actor/actress tho.
- You've been the one and only EggXplorer for 2 months now. How are you feeling?
Pretty good. I must say, that contest was very hard, and I am looking forward to the next challege. Just hope I have as much time as I did back then; the last one probably took me close to 30 hours to do lol.
- What is your Guilty Pleasure? =P
Guilty pleasure... this could get me in trouble...but if we stay PC, then I would have to say it's cooking for large groups of people. I just like the idea of experimenting with food and seeing the reactions of people when I make new creations. I love presentation when it comes to food. In fact, one of my best friends' fathers was an internationally known chef, and I learned a few tricks from him. It's always fun creating new dishes for friends and family.

Most Embarrassing Moment: I was on a school trip with the HS orchestra and we stayed overnight at a hotel with a pool. I had not brought a swim suit but a gal I was rooming with had an extra pair of shorts she let me borrow. So I put that on with a t-shirt and went swimming. Some of the guys talked me into a race and when I kicked off the side of the pool the shorts went right to my feet. O_O Luckily for me, the t-shirt was long and covered most everything, I hope. But I lost the race stopping to pull up my shorts.
-
Most frightened of: Spiders, if they get too close, my brain will actually turn off from fear and I am paralyzed. :(
-
Happiest Moment: The day I got married to my huggy pie!! ^_^ Love you hun.
-
A Vivid Childhood Memory: There was a spider with a very large tummy sitting on a flower just behind the house. I knew this spider was about to lay her eggs and I did not want hundreds of baby spiders in the house, so I picked up a small stick, a twig really, to hit the spider. But I was afraid I would miss so I slowly did a couple practice swings and the 2nd one just barely touched the spider's back and it exploded. It had waited too long to lay its eggs and the spider burst its guts and eggs all over the back of the house and me. It was on my face, in my mouth and eyes and all over my new top. I could not move or breathe for a long time as my head spun and spun. I do not remember anything after, like how I got cleaned up. I just remember the screaming. I was deathly afraid of spiders before that happened and since then I often just lock up if they get too close to me.
-
Your “good deed” of the century: I took in a stray cat that had been abused and tortured. She was my guardian angel, SusieQ.
-
Guilty Pleasure(s): I like grade B sci-fi movies and romance manga.
-
If you had 1 wish, what would it be and why?: That every one I know would know how much they are truly treasured and loved by God.
-
When refilling your toilet paper, do you prefer it over or under?: Oh this is not a question, has to be over!!!

This week:
::Volfann::
- Real Name: Kevin
- Age: 48
- Marital Status: Married to a Cardiac RN
- Occupation: Retired/Stay-at-home dad
- Hometown: Middle Tennessee
- Pets: 2 dogs and 2 cats
- Toilet Paper Over or Under?: over
For those of you who frequent the forums or Newegg Trivia Challenge, Volfann is no stranger. He’s a helpful hand or an innovative quizmaster, depending on where you find him.
Volfann was born and raised in middle Tennessee and is retired from manufacturing supervision and quality assurance. By his own admission, he’s “an avid movie watcher and critic,” but on television, he prefers to watch Discovery, A&E and the History Channel documentaries (where he finds inspiration for his trivia questions).
He’s also the proud father of 6 kids, ranging in age from 5 to 29. “The children keep me too busy to do much else since they have much more energy than I do now.” His youngest is getting ready to enter kindergarten and his oldest is serving in the Air Force, which helped him make the decision to donate his Uber prize (a $100 gift card) to Dagger, another forum member who’s serving in Iraq. “I'm still shocked about having the Uber title bestowed upon me. It was honor enough just to be nominated.”
His favorite forum currently is the Off-topic Debates: “We have some very insightful people posting there on a variety of topics. Genseneca posts some of the best political satire that I have seen anywhere.” And though he refrains from taking part in the discussions, he enjoys following them. “There seems to be a forum to suit anyone’s tastes which I feel is necessary to build a strong community. There are many forums where you can go and talk about computers, but not that many I know of where you can discuss your computer and then go talk about your favorite car or movie.”
The Newegg Trivia Challenge was also his idea. “As an Uber, I felt the need to try and start something that all forum members could enjoy doing and hopefully keep them coming back to the forum.” He says that it’s off to a good start, with several members playing every day. “It gives the members a chance to socialize a bit and laugh at themselves when they have a bad score. It's all in good fun and that's what matters most. Of course I thought I would devastate the competition, but so far, that isn't happening. We have some very good players right now.”
Ultimately, Volfann’s attitude is what makes him such a valued community member. “I mostly try to add a bit of humor to the forum and hopefully give someone something to smile about that might help them through a bad day.”
Volfann’s Rig
“This should get lots of laughs from the do-it-yourselfers, but I have 2 Dells. Yes, I said it: DELL. I have built my own in the past, but I like Dells and have had very good luck with them. I use a 4600i model that I bought in 2004. I still have the stock Intel 2.8 gig hyperthreaded processor and Seagate 120 gig SATA hard drive. The twin NEC 3550 DVD burners, Crucial RAM, ATI Radeon X1600 video card and the Seagate 160 gig external HD are from Newegg, of course. I'm not a ‘gamer,’ so it serves my needs very well. My wife is a Sims enthusiast of the highest order so she gets to use the newest computer, which is a Dell XPS 400 dual core. It is stock except for the Nvidia 7600 GT overclocked video card from Newegg. I am so old school that I still use a 19 inch Viewsonic CRT monitor. My wife has a 19 inch LCD, but I like my old CRT better.”
