Why the low Windows score on HDD?

I recently completed a new build and ran the Windows 7 experience test. Every thing came up high 7's but my HDD. This is puzzling because its a complete new build with fresh install of Windows 7 64bit home premium. Here are the specs:

Asus P6X58D-E mobo with bios and build date 3/24/2010

6Gb Corsair XMP DDR3 1600

intel corei7 930 cpu @ 2.83Ghz

Western digital caviar black 1TB SATA 3 plugged into one of the 2 SATA3 6Gb ports

XFX Radeon HD5970 video card (no overclocking)

Coolermaster Hyper 212+

Coolermaster Haf 932 case

X-Fi Fatal!ty Champion Series PCI-e x1 sound card

My HDD only scores a 5.9 . I don't understand?  Got any suggestions or comments? By the way I purchased all this from NewEgg and this is my 4th build thanks for the great service!

Dont worry man. 5.9 is real common score. (same as my WD 640gig, 7200 sata 3) From what Ive seen, the only HDD's that score high are the SSD's. Of those, the intel's are amoung the best.

I bet you almost maxed out the GPU scores with that 5970!! If you got the $$ for that card and you want to really make your rig even sicker, cruise through some of the SSD's. Hell, buy me one while your at it, lol

Heres a good one

The scale of the Windows Experience Index ranges from 1.0 to 5.9. See this link:   http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/experience-index.aspx

Bottom-line: I don't see how you would get higher than the 5.9. I have never seen higher than a 5.9 on any component...

I don't get it, either - I have two RAID0 pair of WD Velociraptors, for systems and swaps - and get a measly 6.2 :(

any single hard drive can only score a 5.9, it takes a ssd or multiple drives in raid to bump that score. its somewhat arbitrary.

yea im geting a 6.6 on mine but i have to 500 wd black in raid 0

the larger the drive the lower the score this is due to seak times

smaler drives will get beter results

and of cours solide state drives will do beter yet

I have two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10s in RAID0. HD Tach shows about 160 MB/s peak, 129 MB/s average. Despite that, Windows only gives me a 5.9. I'll be adding two more drives as soon as I can back up all my files. Should be interesting to see if it increases at all.

Any mechanical hard drive no matter its size or no matter if it is in raid0 or not only scores a 5.9 on the WEI. Go to microsoft and look it up if you like so to those of you saying you run raid0 and get a 6.2 or whatever arent being honest.

Impossiable according to microsoft and since they made the score i trust their word over yous. Oh and maybe because i have those 2 same drives in raid 0 in a gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 with sata 3 connections being used and i get 5.9.

In order to get a higher HD Ratings you have to go with SS-Drives. I had one at the computer repair shop when i was part time and it had a 6.5 rating for a brand new SSDrive...sweet build...had 7's and 6's across the board.

any 7200rpm HDD will give you a 5.9 rating, which at one point in time was the highest, until 10000rpm, and 15000rpm HDD's released. But to get a perfect windows experience score, you need SSD's (Solid State Drives).

I have a C300 SSD and I get a score of 7.9 using the SATA 3 interface on a P67 MB & a 2500k CPU.   On my old system w/ a E8500, the best score I got w/ a C300 was 7.3.

Hello:

I am running two Raptors 600GB in RAID 1 and my score is 6.2.  I always heard to get higher than 5.9 was to go with SSD.  Seems not to be accurate.  I am 7.6 accross the board on Windows score, and 6.2 on HDD.

Reading in weishare.net that Windows Vista only rates up to 5.9 on Windows Score.  Windows 7 rates up to 7.9.  Interesting.

One post stated here that some of the entries here were not truthful.  Maybe a little more reading would have prevented such a statement. Always something new.

My new build got a 7.9 for the Crucial C300 64gb SSD SATA III.  This is just Microsofts way of making guys like us that have to have the "best" run out and buy SSD's :b

Thanks for clearing that up Chas. I also have quite a fast hard drive with the Samsung F3 500GB. It too scores a 5.9 in WIN7 WEI. My measly 40GB X-25 SSD beats it handily with a 7.0.

I have been lloking at the C300 for a while now but I think I'd like to wait for the m4 or even better the Vertex 3 120 to come down in price. Probably will be purchasing in the fall for my new rig!

You must not be using a SATA3 cable.  Just kidding (kinda).  I suspect that is pretty typical for a high perf HDD.

Well, I have two W.D. 320 gig drives in Raid 0 and STILL get a 5.9 ? Maybe the miniscule 8mb caches have something to do with it... or the 7200 rpm spindle speed? When I had 4 80 gig Velociraptors ($26 from geeks) in raid 0 it was only 6.6 though....Not smart enough to know why but it sure seemed pretty zippy to me. It was noticeably quicker than my sandforce ssd was that's for sure. I just am partial to mechanical drives due to their longevity compared to the limited writes a ssd has...

Jeezzz you guys!!!  Why on earth would you have any faith in the "Windows Index" as being something that means anything, is beyond me.  I mean these people brought Vista now Win 8.  I trust their ability to do anything right except control the market and make money.  I would just love it if we guys would all switch to Linux, Maybe then MS might try for a change to bring out some operating system that works well.
