I just now read that nVidia acquired Ageia...I thought that between Ageia physics and "true" quad core processing that AMD/ATI stood a chance of redemption by going a different route technologically. Around the time of socket 939 (seems so long ago) AMD seemed untouchable. Although ATI took the backseat graphically around that time, building gaming computers was fun. Moving closer towards the present ATI took the upper hand graphically and with its integration with Ageia physics seemed like they were moving towards being as untouchable as AMD was not so many years ago. Intel took the crown of processing away from AMD in a BIG way. So much so that I feel forced to ask myself when choosing CPU's/mobos, "Well let's see...do I want the AMD toddler pc or the Intel college graduate pc?".
Hybrid CrossfireX seemed like it may have given ATI the upperhand eventually until I read that Hybrid SLI was going to come out in a bigger way than micro ATX mobos. With every ingenuity tech-wise that AMD or ATI seems to be able to come up with, Intel and nVidia seem to find a way to screw them over and reclaim themselves as the kings of the future of gaming. Is nothing sacred?!
Now we have 790i chipsets on mobos created by EVGA,XFX,etc. and I don't see companies like Sapphire or Diamond following suit with 800FX mobos. So could AMD and ATI be close to death? Or is there an imminent merger between companies and technologies that has yet to be seen? Only time will tell...
